the air was getting a bit colder than usual when shinatsu stepped out of the subway station. it was sunday morning and the sun was already hiding behind grey clouds in the sky. she tightened her coat as she walked down the crowded road. compared to other days, people were walking rather leisurely on the sidewalk, enjoying their weekend.
“natsu-chan!” someone called her from behind cheerily. she definitely knew who it was without even turning her head. the girl caught up to her in a second with her typical wide, bright smile. “saw you at the station but you walked so fast, shinatsu! what’s the hurry? can’t wait to meet akaashi-san, huh?”
yes, they had finally talked about it a few days ago over a video call right after the preliminary. it was more of an interrogation, though. and in this case, she was the one getting interrogated. it started with the question of when her feelings started to bloom, what she liked about him, all the way to what she was going to do with those feelings—mizuki asked most of the questions while haru was listening intently with a not-so-innocent smile, knowing she had done well dropping the news while it was still fresh.
“oh quit it, mizuki. i’ve told you, it’s just a little crush. and i am not gonna do anything about it. besides, isn’t it weird? haru is my best friend and he’s her brother,” shinatsu scolded mizuki, who walked next to her, to mask her actual feelings, “my best friend’s brother, i repeat. mad weird.”
“what’s wrong with it? haru gave you an approval look, remember?” mizuki bumped her shoulder against shinatsu’s.
shinatsu sighed. mizuki was as stubborn as she was. it wasn’t going to be easy to divert her attention away from shinatsu’s blooming love life. “enough about me. how about your new friendship with sakusa-san, is it going well?”
or maybe not, seeing how her expression turned blank in an instant. “actually, i’m not sure about that. but seeing how he never replies to my texts, i think he hates—”
“wow, okay hold up, hate is such a strong word, and i don’t think he hates you,” shinatsu quickly raised a hand and corrected her. “i think he tolerates you.”
“yeah, whatever. it’s not like i care that much about him. unlike you with akaashi-san,” mizuki giggled annoyingly, poking shinatsu’s arm to tease her more. it was fascinating but also terrifying to see how fast her expression changed within seconds.
shinatsu quickened her pace as she didn’t want to deal with mizuki’s teasing any longer. she practically sprinted her way to the akaashi household, only to be greeted by kuroo and kenma who had just arrived as well. it wasn’t really their first time meeting outside the school volleyball setting, but still shinatsu wouldn’t call them casually without bokuto or akaashi present, after all they were her seniors by age, by grade, and by experience in volleyball. so she cracked a small smile and nodded in acknowledgment.
her eyes shifted to kenma who looked like he got dragged there against his will, “are you okay, kozume-san?”
“he’s okay, just a little cranky because i gave him the wrong date and made him pause his game,” kuroo said casually, earning himself a glare from the guy in question. “anyway, why did you run, kinoshita-chan? are you being chased? is someone bothering you?”
before she could reply, a loud familiar voice interrupted them. “hey, hey, hey! what are you guys doing out here? why don’t you guys come in?” bokuto came, with mizuki trailing behind him, at the right time as akaashi opened the front door.
“oh you all have arrived? come in, come in,” said akaashi, letting them through. kenma, mizuki, and bokuto quickly made their way into the house as the november cold air was getting more chilly, followed by kuroo, and right when shinatsu walked past him, akaashi smiled softly, “you came.”
“haru told me there’s a slight change in plan… you guys want to watch the preliminary videos, right? of course, i wouldn’t miss it.” her eyes shined with excitement.
akaashi chuckled as he closed the door behind him. “yeah, bokuto-san and kuroo-san got their hands on it yesterday and they want to watch and review it as soon as possible like usual. i’m a bit curious myself… so i suggest we watch it today.”
“this is actually better than playing video games, to be honest,” shinatsu whispered before joining the others in the living room who were already busy doing their things: kuroo was setting the tape with haru’s help, as she is the homeowner, mizuki was taking out all the snacks she brought while bokuto checked them out beside her to decide which one should they open first, and kenma had his eyes glued to his phone, thumbs moving lazily across the screen.
when akaashi set down the glasses for the guests, kuroo hit play for the first match, miyagi’s final preliminary, karasuno vs shiratorizawa. shinatsu winced every time the screen showed karasuno’s libero receiving ushijima’s powerful spikes. she knew how hard it was to handle a ball from a lefty. once, back in junior high, one of her opponents was just like ushijima and it took her five balls to finally get the hang of it. but this guy managed in three. “he handled it so well. what’s his name?”
“who?” kuroo asked without turning his head away from the tv. beside him, bokuto leaned forward like he was watching an olympic match.
she pointed to the guy in an orange jersey with the number four printed on his back. “karasuno’s libero.”
“oh, he’s nishinoya yuu, a junior,” kuroo grabbed a snack from the coffee table, “yaku also approves of him, says he’s really prominent.”
“natsu, isn’t that your cousin, tobio?” haru, who was sitting next to kuroo on the carpet, nudged shinatsu’s knee.
“yes, yes, it’s tobio, and he is outstanding as always,” mizuki chimed in, looking awestruck at how quick and beautiful kageyama tobio set the ball for the orange-haired guy in the number ten jersey. then she turned to kenma beside her, “kenma, now i see why you said karasuno number ten is interesting. i think he’s a monster.”
kenma nodded in approval, “right? you wouldn’t believe what he was like when we first met. shoyo has improved a lot in the past few months, and i think he’s still growing.”
mizuki laughed, seeing how kenma’s eyes sparkled for a bit when talking about hinata shoyo, “you’re so hooked, kenma-chan!”
kenma sank deeper into the couch.
“see, it’s not just me,” kuroo laughed out loud, “i told him that he looks at shoyo like he always does at a new video game he just bought!”
kenma glared at kuroo and muttered,“i do not.”
“you so do,” mizuki chuckled.
then he sighed. “mizuki, please, don’t take after kuroo’s bad personality. he’s a bad influence.”
hearing what kenma said made the whole room burst into laughter. shinatsu glanced sideways and saw akaashi covering his smile with his hands. on the other hand, bokuto slapped kuroo’s back, saying, “oh, he got you!”
“haru-chan, why are you laughing along with them?! you should be on my side!” kuroo, who already looked dejected at kenma’s words, acted like he had just been betrayed. his eyes widened in disbelief at haru.
at almost every meetup, kuroo got all flirty with haru, which always ended with her ignoring him. there was almost always something for him to tease her about, but fortunately for haru, kuroo knew the limit and he never pushed her buttons too far.
knowing it was one of his antics, haru was not even surprised anymore and simply brushed him aside jokingly, “why should i?”
“oof, bad day for kuroo-san,” mizuki poured salt straight into kuroo’s open wound. she patted his shoulder from the couch, “this will pass, kuroo-san, i know you can handle this.”
soon after, they got sucked back into the game. it was at set point of the second set, and the long-awaited moment finally came. tsukishima kei, karasuno’s middle blocker, finally managed to block ushijima’s spike completely, grabbing the first win for karasuno in that set.
“holy cow, tsukki really performed so well in this match!” bokuto shouted and pointed towards the tv, which showed tsukishima screaming his lungs out in victory. “that is totally his moment right there.”
“i couldn’t be more proud,” kuroo agreed as he wiped nonexistent tears from his eyes. “can’t wait to defeat him later.”
five sets in, ushijima’s spike slammed into the court with even more power than before.
“that was brutal,” shinatsu muttered under her breath.
“yeah,” akaashi said beside her.
the tips of her ears turned red as she calculated the proximity between them for akaashi to actually hear her random babble despite the loud environment they were in—bokuto being dramatic in his commentary. after gathering the courage, shinatsu turned to face him to fact-check it herself. akaashi was already looking at her, to her surprise—and his as well. they both quickly looked away, flustered.
haru, who just got back from the bathroom, noticed what had just happened between her brother and her friend. she smiled to herself. somehow it was always her at the crime scene, witnessing the fleeting moments of those two individuals.
“hey, can you two start cooking lunch now?” haru sat back down in her spot and asked her brother and shinatsu, breaking the tension between them. “i’m kind of starving.”
“me too!” mizuki shouted from the other end of the couch—her hearing ability suddenly becoming a hundred times better whenever food was involved.
“alright,” akaashi got up, heading to the kitchen, but paused and looked at shinatsu, “are you coming, shinatsu?”
a moment of realization hit her.
mizuki and haru exchanged knowing looks, trying their best not to tease their best friend on the spot and just let them be. the recording of the match between karasuno and shiratorizawa had ended. the group was now split into three. with shinatsu and akaashi in the kitchen, haru, bokuto, and kuroo were sharing and discussing their two cents about the match as they prepared the table. then there were kenma and mizuki, who had found themselves playing a game on kenma’s switch which they connected to the tv.
it wasn’t long before akaashi appeared with a big pot of ramen, enough for the seven of them. shinatsu followed behind him while holding two plates of chicken karaage. kenma quickly paused the game so they could join the table for lunch.
“thanks for the food!” they exclaimed before digging in.
“oh, this is good,” mizuki’s eyes widened after tasting the food. she nodded in approval and gave a thumbs up to akaashi and shinatsu who were sitting next to each other again.
“akaashi! i didn’t know you could cook,” bokuto said as he stuffed himself with more karaage.
“shinatsu helped me a lot with this one,” akaashi smiled softly at shinatsu, who was already blushing.
“oya?” kuroo noticed something in the air between the two, but instead he decided to whisper to haru, who was right beside him. “is there something going on with your brother and kinoshita-chan?”
“not yet,” haru whispered back calmly, “but i really hope so!”
kuroo chuckled and ruffled her hair playfully. “your honesty is so adorable, haru-chan.”
haru just gave him a look and turned to mizuki to talk about some school stuff. the conversation then led to the upcoming training camp for the all-japan youth team, which shinatsu and mizuki had both been invited to.
“the training camp is next week, right?” haru asked. she was a little sad at first for being the only one who hadn’t been invited, but at the same time she was also happy and proud of her two friends. she had already known those two would make it big in this field.
shinatsu nodded as she chewed her last piece of karaage. “yup. tobio just messaged me yesterday that he’s also invited. and said we could meet up later during free time.”
mizuki’s eyes sparkled at the mention of tobio. “of course, he gets the invitation! i can’t wait to meet him, it’s been so long!”
“don’t tell me—you still have a crush on him?” shinatsu quickly switched into investigation mode.
“no, no, of course not! i have told you, it was when we were children! just a silly little first crush type of thing. i think it was more of admiration, though,” mizuki explained in a rush before shinatsu got the wrong idea. “yes, i still admire him for his passion in volleyball, but there’s no other feelings attached.”
seeing how panicked mizuki looked, shinatsu chuckled and then shrugged, “well, it’s okay if you still have one. but, you know, you shouldn’t have any expectations for him. his head is already completely filled with volleyball.”
“hold on, mizuki-chan, you know karasuno’s setter?” bokuto asked, getting interested in their conversation.
“yeah, he’s sort of my summer childhood friend.” she didn’t feel like telling more about it. “anyway, whose match are we going to watch next?”

later that night, mizuki stopped by a convenience store near her house. she wanted to restock the snacks in her room because she had emptied it out for today’s hangout at haru’s house. as she browsed the chips aisle, she noticed a familiar curly-haired guy she hadn’t seen since last week.
“sakusa-san?”
kiyoomi, in his black tracksuit, turned around and tilted his head. “mizuki? what are you doing here?”
she raised the snacks in her hand. “grabbing these. what about you? evening run?”
“mhmm,” he nodded before squinting his eyes at her. “by the way, are you sick? it’s not like you to call me by sakusa and get all formal like that.”
“i thought you don’t want us to be friends?”
“haven’t i already said fine to that?” he crossed his arms, trying to understand what was actually going on in her head. “like months ago.”
“sounds forced to me,” mizuki mumbled, averting her gaze down to the floor which suddenly looked more interesting than the guy before her.
kiyoomi sighed. “seriously. what is wrong with you?”
“you never reply to my texts.”
she finally met his eyes. his were already boring into hers.
“huh?” kiyoomi took out his phone and checked his inbox. “i don’t receive any. you sure you got the right number?”
“you put your number yourself last week,” mizuki showed her phone to him in a second. “you sure you put the right one?”
kiyoomi took her phone and checked the number. “shit, i mistyped one digit. sorry, must’ve slipped,” he muttered as he quickly edited it. after that, he called his number, making sure her call was through, and then saved it. he handed her phone back to her.
mizuki took some time to process what just happened, then she pulled her hair in distress. “what the hell? so who did i text to for these past few days?!”
“some stranger, who else?” kiyoomi shrugged lightly, as if this whole fiasco was not because he had mistyped his own phone number. “they probably didn’t read your texts at all, thinking it was just spam or something. what were you saying in those texts anyway?”
“a lot, actually!” mizuki groaned. “there were personal subjects in there too, you know! i can’t believe i poured my heart out to some stranger. and where have you been this past week? i didn’t see you on the train or at the station.”
“i had some family matters, so i got home pretty late these past few days,” he answered almost immediately before asking her to open the texts she had been talking about. he read every single message carefully.
“should be fine,” he said, giving back the phone to her and heading to the cashier, “it’s harmless.”
mizuki followed closely behind, still grumbling about it. ignoring that, kiyoomi took all the snacks in her hands and placed them next to his drink. mizuki, who was still sullen, shot him a questioning look. after he paid for everything, he left with his drink without saying anything, leaving her dumbfounded.
she quickly thanked the cashier and ran after him. “kiyoomi!”
kiyoomi stopped and waited for her to catch up. “hm. already back to yourself?”
“shut up. i still hate you,” she pouted as they walked home together.
“glad it’s mutual,” he muttered nonchalantly. “congrats, by the way, for winning and getting chosen for the all-japan youth team.”
author’s note • omg i didn’t even know why i wrote this but i surely was having osamu (and perhaps kiyoomi) brainrot lmao
they’d stayed like that—held each other close with his hand fiddling her hair while her soft and steady breathing hit his bare chest—for almost two hours. the dimmed light illuminated his side figure while the clock on his bedroom’s wall was ticking in the same rhythms as their heartbeat. not too slow, not too fast. all at the right calming pace.
‘this is the last time,’ osamu reminded himself as he turned and kissed her on top of her head. as he breathed in her typical scent, he could feel his heart warmer. he pulled away a little and stared down at the woman who was now looking up right at his grey orbs with a questioning look. it was almost 4 in the a.m. yet they both were still wide awake, cherishing their last intimate moment together.
without saying anything, osamu put his arms around her waist again and brought her even closer to him, embracing her like she was his everything. like she was the sole reason for his existence that he would never let go. but he also knew all too well that wasn’t right. she was never his to begin with.
a soft whisper suddenly filled in the silence. “osamu.”
he hummed, asking her to continue whatever it was she was going to say.
“you know i love you as a friend... but that’s just it. i don’t think this is gonna work out for us anymore. you with your business and me with my job—”
“i know and i love you too,” he quickly added, cutting her off. “it’s okay, y/n. really. i understand your decision. besides, we’re still friends, right?”
the brown haired woman chuckled. “of course, we are. unless you don’t want to?”
he hugged her tightly, settling his head at the crook of her neck after placing a soft kiss there. “nah, i still need ya to advertise my new branch store.”
she punched his arm lightly and let out a grin. “you jerk.”
osamu laughed at her reaction. “what? i’m being honest here. it’s a win-win situation, i get more customers and ya get free onigiris made by none other than miya osamu himself!”
a smile formed on her face as she rolled her eyes dramatically. “whatever, ‘samu.”
another silent hit the two of them again. a good silence where they simply cuddled and enjoyed each other’s company. again, osamu reminded himself mentally that this was their last time to be like this. to be this close. skin to skin.
osamu took a deep breath and let it out slowly, eyes fluttering close. he’d seen this coming from the very beginning. yes he knew the consequences, yet he still made this choice. and he never regretted it.
“how’s sakusa?” asked osamu after some time.
there was a pause. she snuggled closer and answered with a muffled voice, “good, i think? he’s still with my colleague i mentioned the other day, so yeah, i think he’s good. um... they’re a nice person and very patient, a perfect fit for kiyoomi. i’m glad they’re together.”
his long fingers stroked her hairs gently. “don’tcha talk to him?”
“yes, but now i’m kinda mad at him, so we’re not really on speaking terms,” she yawned, hoping osamu would just drop that topic and they finally could sleep while the sky outside was still dark.
hearing that, osamu raised his eyebrows, confused. “what happened?”
“he never went to any of my fashion shows. you know he and i have been friends for almost 8 years now. and yet, he chose to go to theirs!” y/n said with her eyes, which showed a hint of feeling betrayed, now locked with osamu’s amused eyes. “can you imagine? how could he trust them in the span of one year?”
when osamu said nothing, she continued, “ugh, i hate him. i even declined an offer because i promised to watch his debut game in the pro league. but look at him—didn’t even bother to ask when my show was scheduled.”
“y/n,” osamu called, making her stare at him with a pissed face. talking about kiyoomi these past few days always managed to make her boiling in anger. osamu let out a hearty laugh. his palm cupped her cheek when he said, “you’re being jealous, babe.”
she rolled her eyes. “of course i am, ‘samu. haven’t you been listening to what i say? he chose to go to their show, whom he barely knows, instead of going to mine, his best buddy.”
“talk to him, then,” he suggested after shaking his head at her pettiness and how dense she was.
“i did, but you know him. he’s such a blunt jerk. i can’t believe he said theirs was better because they only invited a few important people while mine was open to the public. i mean, he’s not totally wrong and i know about his phobia and such, but i’m still mad at him. period,” y/n stated. “let’s stop talking about that shithead.”
osamu chuckled and placed a quick kiss on her pouty lips. “yeah, let’s stop talking about him. this is our last night after all.”
seeing his little smirk, y/n gulped. osamu cupped her cheek and leaned in, closing the gap between the two of them. they closed their eyes as his lips reached hers. contrary to what she expected, the kiss wasn’t as rough as she thought it’d be, rather it was as gentle as a breeze. as delicate as a glass. the kind of kiss that made her feel numb and got her thinking how he could invade all her senses so addictively. but she couldn’t bring herself to do the same, she didn’t want to hurt him by pretending that she felt the same way. the kiss, however, was also as if it was his only way of saying goodbye to her, so she let him. for the last time.
miya osamu wasn’t sure what’s gotten into him—he just couldn’t let go. and so he didn’t. to him, she was like black hole that pulled him in until he lost his gravity and trapped without a way out. she was like medicine that got him intoxicated. she was like spring that came after winter. she was the earth to his moon. he constantly revolved around her, while she was revolving around someone else. the sun.
he knew from the very beginning he could never be the sun, but him being the certified clown, ignoring his own brother’s warning, he started getting himself tangled into this. as everybody knew, everything that started needed an end. and this was their end. a tear suddenly fell down his cheek, making its way to their sealed mouths. he slowly broke the kiss, and whispered, “thank you.”
she shook her head ever so slightly then wiped the trace of tears on his cheek softly. “i’m the one who should thank you, ‘samu. and i’m so sorry.”
“there’s nothing to be sorry about,” he chuckled a little and plastered a smile on his face. “it’s for the best.”

sumida city gymnasium this afternoon was filled with the cheering from different high schools’ supporters in the semifinal of spring high tokyo representative playoffs. as the only one school that still hadn’t been eliminated in both the boys and the girls volleyball match, fukurodani supporters occupied almost half of the stands in the gym. the school’s cheerleaders and marching band also attended, not wanting to lose to other powerschool like itachiyama academy and nekoma high school.
fukurodani girls volleyball club was on their match point in the last set when the ball hit their middle blocker’s hands hard, nearly dropping outside the court as shinatsu quickly ran towards it and then dived to keep the ball up in the game. mizuki’s eyes never left the ball that flew over to the net on her side, it was neither high or low. just the perfect height for her to spike it with all the energy left on her body to the other side of the court’s corner, snatching their last point that day and also securing their ticket to the nationals in the next spring as the first girls representative of tokyo prefecture.
the crowds roared as the whole fukurodani girls team hugged each other before lining up to bow to their opponents and shook their hands, then they lined up again in front of the audience, giving a bow as gratitude for the support. cheers of prouds were filled in the air, leaving a very big smile on everyone’s faces in the team as they made their way to the changing rooms. mizuki was the first one to run off and grab her things before going to the bathroom; meanwhile shinatsu and haru walked rather behind than the others, taking their time while chatting about random things.
after changing into clean tracksuits, their coach told them that they’d have their evaluation of today’s match when they got back; they were free to go check the matches that were still going on since they still had to wait for the boys club to go back to school together with the school bus.
“i wanna get something from the vending machine, you guys can go first,” haru said to shinatsu and mizuki on their way back to the court to watch the remaining matches from the side.
“alrighty,” mizuki replied as haru turned right to find the vending machine she believed she saw before the game.
shinatsu and mizuki continued their way while talking about how curious mizuki to finally see kiyoomi’s game live. shinatsu had already heard about the two of them becoming friends and such which made her laugh because it sounded rather one sided in mizuki’s part. she couldn’t believe either that her friend would really bother one of the top three aces until he gave in.
when they arrived, nekoma was playing against nohebi for the third place on court b while fukurodani was playing against itachiyama on court a. they decided to watch nekoma’s game for a while, making their way to the front, just right behind a low barrier between the court and spectators.
shinatsu took a glance at their score which is tied. “i hope nekoma wins this set so they can go to the national with us.”
“yeah, but you can’t underestimate nohebi. saw them a couple of times and they’re quite as good as nekoma in both defense and offense,” mizuki responded while looking closely at the game. “those snakes really know how to play their game to the fullest, riling up their opponent but also acting nice in front of the referee.”
“ah, i see, typical snakes,” shinatsu nodded her head before gasping at nekoma’s libero, yaku morisuke, who had just received such a hard ball. “did ya see that?! holy moly that’s so cool, as expected from yaku-san!”
the girl on her left side chuckled at her reaction. “you can do that, too, natsu!”
“but—” she was cut off as soon as she spoke when the said boy suddenly jumped at them to keep the ball in play.
next to her, mizuki unconsciously groaned a little, feeling a little sting at her toes which were accidentally stepped by yaku who then fell on the floor in front of them. after the long rally finally stopped with nekoma scoring a point, another member of nekoma’s team came to help yaku.
“i’m so sorry!” yaku exclaimed as he bowed to mizuki.
flustered, mizuki quickly said, “not a problem, yakkun! but are you okay, though?”
shinatsu nodded her head and looked at yaku with worry written all over her face. “yeah, the way you landed looks really painful.”
“nah, i’m fine,” he turned back to the court but then froze when the pain finally hit him hard. feeling his ankle was sprained, yaku couldn’t stop himself from letting out a groan. his friend quickly helped him walk to the bench to get the treatment he needed.
“aw shit, i feel bad for him,” mizuki pouted as the game began again, but this time without yaku playing the libero role.
looking at the front match, shinatsu spoke, “same. but i guess nekoma will still be fine. kuroo’s still there. they’ll be fine.”
mizuki laughed a little. “oh yea that rooster head of course won’t let ‘em get through that easily.”
and they were right. after many points scored and taken, nekoma officially won the game and became the host representative for tokyo prefecture. haru who had come in between the sets smiled widely while both shinatsu and mizuki shouted at the top of their lungs to congratulate nekoma which made kuroo and kenma turn to look at them and gave thumbs up. they had known each other for quite some time since they occasionally met at haru’s house or at school when their school had practice matches together. at first, they didn’t really know each other that well. but since haru’s brother, akaashi keiji, friends with fukurodani’s ace, bokuto koutaro, they just somehow became quite close.
“let’s check out our school’s team,” haru proposed as she literally dragged them to the other side before the match ended.
to her surprise, the match was still going on in the third set with the current score of 5-8 led by itachiyama academy. right when they successfully managed to pass crowds of people to get a better view of the match, mizuki couldn’t help to drop her jaw at the sight in front of her. now she knew why he, indeed, was among the top three. the way his wrist spiked the ball was no way near what people said normal.
next to her, shinatsu also noticed this and grimaced at the thought of receiving that nasty powerful spike. “oh, wow, it’s so freaking cool. i lowkey wanna try to receive those spikes. can you do that too, mizuki?” she turned to face the short haired girl who was still awestruck by kiyoomi’s technique.
“can’t. my wrist isn’t as flexible as his,” mizuki stated after a short pause, eyes never leaving the game before her.
“flexible?” haru asked, confused of what mizuki talked about.
mizuki nodded her head enthusiastically. “yeah, didn’t you see it when he slammed that ball? it’s totally abnormal!”
“uh… okay,” haru’s eyes flickered back to the court as she mumbled to herself, “how did she even notice such small detail…”
shinatsu, who heard what haru said in a low voice, let out a hearty laugh when she realized mizuki didn’t exactly give the answer to haru’s question, but she decided to say nothing. focusing her eyes back to the game, shinatsu’s blue orbs unconsciously followed one particular boy on fukurodani’s side. it wasn’t the first she’d seen him play in an official match, but somehow she still felt as if it was her first time. the way he gracefully set the ball for the ace as he called out the latter name, and how both sides of his lips quirked up a little bit when the ball had been slammed down to the opposite’s ground, made her heart skip a beat.
she didn’t even know since when she started to feel it, but the next thing she knew, her crush for him was already big enough to make her blushed every single time she made contact with him. none of her friends knew about this. not because she didn’t trust them, but it’d be completely weird, especially with haru.
“my eyes are very, very blessed today,” mizuki spoke in a dreamy voice as she kept staring at itachiyama’s ace’s figure.
without realizing, words slipping out of shinatsu’s mouth with the same dreamy tone, “yeah, i feel like i could watch him all day.”
mizuki and haru automatically snapped their heads to face shinatsu as they caught off guard by what she said. “huh?”
“what?” shinatsu blinked several times, completely unaware of what just came out of her mouth. she thought she didn’t say it out loud for both of her friends to hear. but seeing the smirk on mizuki’s face made her flushed, knowing she just made a tiny mistake and there was no way they’d let her off the hook.
“so,” mizuki started with her mischievous looks, ready to dig deeper into her little slip, “who’s the one that you could watch all day, natsu-chan?”
shinatsu stuttered, “w-what do you mean?”
next to her, haru squinted her eyes. “don’t pretend like you don’t know. we heard it, now tell us.”
feeling like this was never going to end, shinatsu let out a nervous laugh as she thought of an excuse. in her peripheral vision, there stood bokuto with his excited face which made her said, “bokuto.” looks of disbelief were sent in her way. seeing this, she quickly added, “i mean, who doesn’t wanna watch bokuto all day when he’s in the peak zone like now? man, he always knows how to make people side with him and cheer for him. he’s such a happy virus!”
haru who didn’t want to push her further just shrugged and let it go for now, while mizuki, on the other hand, still stared at shinatsu with zero satisfaction. she was still slightly unconvinced, but haru sent her a warning glare to not push it since it’d make shinatsu more uncomfortable.
rush of relieves flowed through her entire body when shinatsu saw mizuki pout before she continued to watch the game. shinatsu then cheered bokuto’s name as the ace spiked another ball in. her eyes once again drifted to another boy who still looked calm and collected even after his team scored.
little did she know, both haru and mizuki were still curious about the matter, making them stole a glance at her every now and then to get a hint on who she actually meant by what she said. yes it was true that bokuto was a fluff ball of happiness that made everyone want to cheer for, but it definitely wasn’t bokuto who made her go on dreamy mode like that.
it was itachiyama’s match point when the crowds were getting more hyped up. kiyoomi’s name was shouted not only on the court to take the last ball, but also in the whole gymnasium. in the heat of the game, bokuto shouted, “left, left, he’s definitely going for the left.”
next to him, fukurodani’s middle blocker, washio responded without losing his focus on the ball, “i know.”
three man blocks consist of bokuto, washio, and akaashi stand tall in front of kiyoomi who was ready to spike. itachiyama’s supporters cheered for kiyoomi enthusiastically loudly as he hit the ball hard into akaashi’s fingertips until it went out of bounds. shinatsu could see clearly how akaashi’s face turned sour from the loss. bokuto, on the other hand, screamed in frustration before turning to face kiyoomi. “you best remember this, sakusa! next time—”
akaashi cut him off with his typical monotone voice, “bokuto-san, you missed three serves straight during crunch time. let’s be sure to clean that up.”
“akaashi!” bokuto exclaimed as he dropped and hit the ground dramatically. “learn to read the situation! there’s a time and place for everything!”
ignoring bokuto’s rants, akaashi walked towards spectators to line up. after giving their bow to the crowds, akaashi turned around to greet his sister and friends. he smiled and said, “congrats for the first place, guys. you all did a great job today.”
haru only nodded her head while mizuki chuckled, “thanks, akaashi-san. you did a great job, too! now if you’ll excuse me, i need to say hi to a friend.”
she didn’t even wait for another second to catch up with itachiyama’s ace who was now trying to escape from bokuto’s consistent threat that sent his way. haru shook her head but stared at the three of them in amazement; she felt a little sorry for kiyoomi, though. when haru moved her body slightly to face her brother and her friend, she froze.
the two of them radiated the same energy with sparkling eyes as they talked to each other. haru blinked once and twice, trying to process everything. her mind drifted back to the conversation minutes ago which ended up in them watching the game unfold and disregarding her and mizuki’s curiosity at shinatsu’s romantic life. but if she remembered it right, she’d seen a couple of times that shinatsu’s eyes never left a certain figure.
and just like that, it all came into pieces.
haru’s eyes widened at the sudden realization. she’d never thought about it before because she thought all her friends were just kidding when they got all flirty with her brother, especially shinatsu, the least person she’d suspect to have a real crush on him. but now, with everything that was right before her eyes, haru was certainly sure she was right this time.
oh my, this is gonna be reaaaally interesting, haru thought to herself as she left them unbothered to tell mizuki about her discovery with an amused look.

“kiyoomi!” mizuki called out in the middle of an empty hallway.
the said boy stopped in his track, waiting for mizuki to catch up although he already looked extremely pissed now that there came another one to bother him. on his side, bokuto stopped running his mouth and stared dumbfoundedly at mizuki who now stood in front of them while catching her breath instead.
he looked confused for a moment before giving a wide smile at his junior. “mizuki-chan! what are you doing here? do you know him?”
“yeah, he’s my friend!” mizuki finally said after regaining her regular breath, returning bokuto’s big smile, then she faced kiyoomi, “omi! i didn’t know you were that popular… and what is that nasty spin you got there, huh?!”
hearing that, his scowl slowly turned into smirk as he boasted with pride, “that’s because my wrist, here take a look.”
he bent his wrist until his palm touched his forearms. both mizuki and bokuto rounded their eyes in shock. “dang, i could watch this all day,” bokuto muttered, couldn’t take his eyes off kiyoomi’s hand trick as if he was being hypnotized.
on the other hand, mizuki asked in amazement and slightly worried, “holy shit, isn’t that hurt? have you seen a doctor?”
“not a bit,” kiyoomi shrugged, returning his hand back to normal.
“no, wait! do it again!” his two companies practically begged him to show off his flexible wrist again which he obeyed with a little sigh.
with shining eyes, mizuki asked him in a sweet voice. “can i touch it?”
“have you washed your hands?”
“of course! i didn’t touch anything after i washed my hands,” said mizuki, earning an unsure nod from kiyoomi.
the girl reached out her hands excitedly, grazing her fingertips upon his bended wrist carefully which gave kiyoomi a little shudder. to be completely honest, he hadn’t let anyone touch his bended wrist before, except for his own family. this was his very first time, and he quickly ended it. “satisfied?”
mizuki nodded vigorously. seeing that, bokuto also wanted to try touching it, but kiyoomi was quicker to dismiss him. “stay away from me.”
not far from the three of them, haru watched the scene unfolded before her in horror. she held the urge to tell mizuki about her new discovery and decided to go back to the changing room instead. while walking away from the scene, she muttered to herself, still couldn’t believe what she had just witnessed, “they look pretty freaky… i’ll just tell her on the bus…”

talking with akaashi keiji always managed to make her heart feel the warmness that laced within his low voice. years ago, when she first knew him, she wouldn’t dare to talk to him casually. his calm demeanor looked rather intimidating, especially when he spoke. although he seemed polite and restrained, haru had told her that her brother was actually the blunt type.
nowadays, every time they met at school or when shinatsu and mizuki hung out at haru’s house, akaashi would often initiate a conversation with her. it’d be started with a chit chat, but then their topics to talk about would vary from a to z, dismissing their surroundings.
“hey, do you have any agenda this weekend?” akaashi asked in a chill manner.
“hm, i don’t know yet,” shinatsu replied as she turned to where haru was standing, but she was greeted with nothing. only then she realized haru had long left them and that the whole gymnasium was almost vacant, leaving only the two of them and some other people on the court to clean up.
akaashi rubbed the back of his neck as he started, “well, this weekend, bokuto, kuroo, and kenma wanted to hang out at my place, playing games and stuff. you and mizuki could come, too. it’ll be fun to have more people. you know, the more the merrier.”
“i’d love to! it—” shinatsu was cut off by her phone ringing in the pocket of her jacket. “wait, hold up.”
she took her phone out, confused at seeing the caller’s name but answered it anyway. “hel—”
“shinatsu-chan! is akaashi with you?!” bokuto screamed as soon as she picked up the calls, making her distance her phone a little from her ear, afraid of damaging her own eardrums.
she answered, “um yeah… why?”
“oh, thank god, i thought he’s been kidnapped or something!” he sighed in relief and continued with a way more calm voice than before. “please, do tell him to quickly come over to the changing room. everyone’s waiting for him, he’s the only one who hasn’t cleaned up. oh, and the bus is also ready at the parking lot.”
shinatsu’s mind went blank for a moment as there were a lot of informations to take in. finally understood the whole current situation, shinatsu bowed her head unconsciously although bokuto couldn’t see it, making akaashi choked in his drink, confused at her action. “i’m sorry i held him back! i’ll tell him right away, bokuto-san! thank you!”
on the other line, bokuto sounded a little startled but then he let out a chuckle. “don’t worry, shinatsu-chan! take your time, but not too long, alrite? see you later!”
the call was hung up. the ash haired girl turned to akaashi and delivered bokuto’s message, “i think you should go to the changing room quickly. they’ve been looking for you.”
akaashi nodded his head. “okay, gotta go. see you!”
when akaashi already left the court, shinatsu smiled to herself like an idiot. reality then hit her back to the earth with a vibrating phone, lots of messages from haru and mizuki filled her notification bar, making her turn on her heels fast. while she was walking to the front lobby where everyone had waited, her smile didn’t fade away as she thought about what just happened.

“mizuki!” the setter shouted as she tossed the ball to the left quickly. a brown haired girl had run towards the net as the ball was approaching the top, then she jumped and stopped mid air for a moment. when the opposed blocker started falling down, she spiked a huge cross real hard, leaving everyone in the gym stunned. whistle blown, indicating the end of that 3 on 3 practice match.
a big smile plastered on oikawa mizuki’s exhausted face as she gave her teammates in that match a high five. kinoshita shinatsu, the libero, put her arms around mizuki shoulder and said, “that was such an awesome spike you got there, mizuki.”
“thanks, but that was because the toss haru sent to me is as good as ever,” she replied and sent a big smile in akaashi haru’s direction before they joined the others who had already gathered around their coach who started to give his feedback for today’s practice and for the upcoming spring interhigh qualifier.
it took the coach around one hour to finally wrap it up. the sky outside was already dark when members of fukurodani academy girl volleyball club started to go home one by one. after changing into spare clothes, mizuki packed her bag and walked towards the bench where her two friends waited. it'd been their routine since middle school to go home together by train.
mizuki, shinatsu, and haru said goodbye to the others left in the gymnasium before getting their way out of school area. even though they still in their first year of high school, the three of them were trusted enough to be starter players considering their own ability in their main field: outside hitter, libero, and setter. on their way, they talked about so many things from school stuff, volley, even random things until shinatsu asked the brown haired girl who walked a bit behind, “so, have you finally talked to him?”
“huh?” mizuki asked her back, totally confused.
haru chimed in, “the boy you talked about months ago.”
“which one?”
both haru and shinatsu rolled their eyes. they had known each other since middle school. all the good sides and bad sides of each person had been shown throughout the years which didn't surprise them any longer to hear such things coming from mizuki's mouth. “the top three ace,” haru answered.
“oh, him,” mizuki muttered under her breath. her mind suddenly drifted into one particular boy with curly black hair. she looked at her friends who'd waited anticipatingly for her answer. “no, i haven’t. i mean, why should i? it’s not like he even knows me. and, i don’t have any business with him?”
shinatsu raised her eyebrows, “aren’t you curious about his technique in spiking balls?”
“not really,” mizuki shrugged. “besides, i could just ask my stupid cousin, tooru. or tobio, or kuroo, or bokuto, or maybe even your lovely brother, haru,” she turned to the black haired girl with glistening eyes that were completely ignored.
“you ass,” shinatsu grinned.
mizuki laughed at both of her friends’ reactions. she remembered how long ago she thought shinatsu was a shy and quiet girl, but everything changed when they became close through playing volleyball together. as for haru, the first impression mizuki got from her and the result of their three years of friendship were not that different except the fact that she actually had such a unique taste and how she viewed anything was beyond.
they didn’t talk much during the ride on the train and preferred to stare at their phone until they reached their own destination station. being the one whose house was the farthest from school, mizuki’s hand quickly reached her bag to find her earphone when shinatsu would get off the train at the next stop after haru had gotten off.
“shit,” she muttered, earning a questioning look from shinatsu who was ready to get off the train. “just realized i forgot to bring my earphone today.”
“oh, i thought you lost something,” shinatsu said right before the train stopped at her destination. “anyways, i’m going. take care!”
“yeah, bye, see you tomorrow,” mizuki said as she slumped down on her seat only to sit up straight back seconds later when her eyes caught the curly black haired boy walking over to her place. she internally screamed when the boy with a white mask almost covering half of his face sat right across from her.
ever since mizuki entered fukurodani academy, she usually met this one particular boy on the train home after practice, right when all her friends had gotten off the train and just two stops away from home. at first, she didn’t recognize who he was. but after she came back from miyagi to visit her grandma, she knew him. she remembered seeing him in one of her cousin tooru’s volleyball magazines.
sakusa kiyoomi, the only second year student among the other two on the top three of all high schooler spiker in japan. mizuki took a glance at him, remembering words from her friends about his technique and such. deep down, her curiosity grew bigger. she’d never seen his school, itachiyama academy, played before. based on their encounters, she couldn’t even picture him playing volleyball especially with his fastidious tendencies.
she’d noticed he always put a mask on his face with both hands in the pocket of his jacket and would stand close to the door if the train were packed with loads of people; in fact, she had never actually seen him whenever she went home during rush hour. he’d only sit down if and only if the train wasn’t crowded like this evening. it was almost nine so the rush hour had long died down.
when the train finally stopped at her destination, mizuki got off at the speed of light. she just wanted to get home as fast as possible and rested her body after a long day. but it was as if mother nature wouldn’t grant her wish that easily, a downpour stopped her right before the exit. her hand once again rummaged the inside of her bag, searching for the clear umbrella she brought in the morning—or so she thought. mizuki let out a heavy sigh when she couldn’t find the damn umbrella anywhere in her bag for five whole minutes and decided to just wait there until the rain stopped.
“why are you still here?” a deep voice came into her ear from the left after quite some time.
her whole body froze. there was a long pause. after regaining her control, mizuki turned to face the person next to her. “um, i forgot to bring my umbrella,” she said as her cheek turned slightly pink.
it was him. the famous ace she had been dreaded to talk to for the past few months was actually standing next to her and talked to her first. on the other hand, sakusa kiyoomi studied the girl carefully before finally offering, “do you want to walk together? it seems like the rain won’t die down for the next hours.”
no, he wasn’t kidding when he said that. afterall, he was the observant type. he’d studied people and things around him for such a long time until it became his second nature. and the girl who now stared at him in shock was one of the examples. since the starting of his second year, he usually met her on the train and although sometimes he’d be the last one to get off the train, he’d catch up with her and realized that their houses were just a block away from each other.
“if it’s okay with you, then yes, please,” mizuki said with a little desperate look after giving some thought about it. god knew how much she hated getting wet from rain, even a drizzle. and the last thing she wanted was to get home really late in drenched clothes.
without saying a word, kiyoomi opened up his black umbrella. they walked side by side under kiyoomi’s umbrella which perfectly fit for the two of them. there was an awkward silence engulfing them until mizuki broke the ice, “thank you.”
kiyoomi simply nodded as a response and another silence hit them again. mizuki racked her brains, trying to find something to talk about while they were walking. then a smile was plastered on her face as she said, “my name’s mizuki, by the way. oikawa mizuki.”
the tall boy glanced at her. “i’m sakusa kiyoomi.”
“i know.” mizuki automatically cursed herself silently for slipping it out of her mouth. kiyoomi, who heard what she said, sent a skeptical look towards her which made her quickly added, “i meant, i’ve seen you on many volleyball magazines before!”
“you read those magazines?”
“my cousin does, so i sometimes take a look at it whenever i pay him a visit,” she stated before blurting out, “honestly, though, you and ushiwaka-chan look great on those magazines. at first i couldn’t believe that it’s really you since i can’t see your face behind that mask. but your uniform confirmed it.”
“i see,” he replied while taking in everything she just said but then his eyes narrowed at her. “wait, did you just call wakatoshi-kun as ushiwaka-chan? do you know him?”
“um, i don’t really know him. met him once in sendai and all i know is how much tooru wanna beat his ass in official matches. and about ushiwaka-chan... that was what tooru called him, i just followed,” she explained, a little bit startled at his question. “why?”
kiyoomi shrugged, “oh, it’s nothing.”
the rest of their way was filled with nothing but silence in raindrops. as they were getting near to the mizuki’s house, the fukurodani girl spoke up, “and… there’s my stop. thanks for your help, kiyoomi. really appreciate it.”
the owner of the black umbrella raised his eyebrows, stopping in front of a typical townhouse that was pointed by her. “i don't think we’re close enough to be on the first name basis yet... but whatever.”
hearing that, mizuki laughed a little as she opened the gate and quickly stepped into her roofed yard. “sorry, habit. but you can call me anything, though. i couldn’t careless.”
he scoffed. “i prefer to not talk to you.”
“ouch, that hurts, omi-chan,” she decided to come up with a new nickname and pretended as if she was stabbed right in the heart, trying to tease him. but kiyoomi being himself just rolled his eyes at her and then turned back, starting to walk away from her with regret slowly creeping in. he started to regret his action today even more when mizuki exclaimed with voice nearly colliding with the sound of the heavy rain, “see you tomorrow, omi-chan!”
then he knew he fucked up.
on the following days, they kept stumbling upon each other on the train home. and compared to before, mizuki was becoming way more talkative although kiyoomi’d ignored her completely as if he never knew who she was. if he thought that would make her stop talking to him, then he was wrong. that didn’t stop mizuki even the slightest. instead, she took it as a challenge to make him acknowledge her.
for the n-th times that week, kiyoomi let out a heavy sigh while she was bugging him as they walked from the station. “stay away from me.”
“why won’t you talk to me?” her tone suddenly became serious.
they both stopped walking on the empty road of their residential area, under a lamppost that’d been lit up. kiyoomi then turned to face her with his resting bitch face. “why should i?”
“why not?”
“’cause i don't want to? duh,” he said as he rolled his eyes before continuing his walk back home. “and don’t you have any friends to talk to? my ears are hurt from listening to your rants this whole week.”
the short brown haired girl ran to catch up with him then said dramatically, “omi-chan, you could stab me hundredth times with your words and i’d still talk to you.”
“such a drama queen,” he muttered under his breath.
hearing that, a smirk crept up on mizuki’s face. “oh? am i getting promoted from a nobody to a queen now?”
since he wasn’t in the mood of arguing, he didn’t respond a thing to her nonsense. he just simply quickened his pace, wanting to get away from the girl as soon as possible. and mizuki noticed this.
“hey, omi, slow down! i don’t have long legs unlike you!” she whined but wouldn’t let him go in peace either.
“slow down, kiyoomi,” she repeated and still no response from the certain boy. she’d lost counts on how many times she'd been ignored by him. this is getting pretty goddamn tiring, god please remind me again why i did this to myself, she thought to herself.
feeling irritated, she spoke in frustration, “oh, come on! why is it so hard for you to have a nice conversation with me like a friend?”
he stopped abruptly, looking annoyed and irritated just like her, then he hissed, “we’re not friends, mizuki.”
“let’s be one then,” she crossed her arms, ignoring the fact that she was called by her first name and staring at his black orbs intently instead.
there was a pause as they stared at each other. if kiyoomi could be honest, he actually wouldn’t mind to befriend her. honestly, her stories were quite fascinating despite the rants and curses she was throwing. his ears and head did get a little hurt by only listening, though. nevertheless, he thought it wouldn’t be any worse than what already happened in the past week.
sakusa kiyoomi took a deep breath before he finally muttered the word oikawa mizuki had been waiting to hear, “fine.”

fun facts!
kiyoomi almost left her at the station but he’d feel bad so he decided to let her use half of his umbrella after going through much deliberation within himself.
mizuki internally screamed and sobbed—even her brain literally stopped functioning for a moment—when kiyoomi finally gave in.
kiyoomi once saw her using her own hand sanitizer right after she used a vending machine at the station and then cleaned the can with a tissue before drinking it. that made him tolerate her a teensy bit though she got very talkative whenever he was around.
