The illusion is irresistible. Behind every face there is a self. We see the signal of consciousness in a gleaming eye and imagine some ethereal space beneath the vault of the skull, lit by shifting patterns of feeling and thought, charged with intention. An essence. But what do we find in that space behind the face, when we look? The brute fact is there is nothing but material substance: flesh and blood and bone and brain.
Samuel Beckett, Molloy
SAMUEL BECKETT Molloy
I get up, go out, and everything is changed. The blood drains from my head, the noise of things bursting, merging, avoiding one another, assails me on all sides, my eyes search in vain for two things alike, each pinpoint of skin screams a different message, I drown in the spray of phenomena.

Henry Miller, Dear, Dear Brenda: The Love Letters of Henry Miller to Brenda Venus
If we could move with the freedom of a god, so that a million years pass in a second, and if we went far enough, past the nearest suns, beyond the star clouds and nebulae, in time they would end. And as if moving out from behind a curtain, we would come to an endless sea of night.
