Scorpius revelled in the brief moment of peace, scanning his eyes over to where Matilda lay on her back in the middle of the bed, her hands were clasped over her little chest, rising and falling where Scorpius had laid her down to sleep in the early hours of that morning. Albus had dressed her in the special birthday pyjamas they’d picked together, patterned with rainbows and little clouds. They matched the nursery she was currently so resistant to sleeping in.
Albus was still asleep too, his head on Scorpius’ chest, his body curled away from Matilda. Scorpius ran his fingers through Albus’ hair, long enough to form an impressive ponytail these days, pulling the long strands up in front of his face and watching them slide between his fingers and fall back down. Albus hadn’t meant to start growing his hair but the combination of Matilda being a newborn and the extra work he’d had to put in to save his business meant he’d delayed his next haircut for so long that it became intentional. James teased him fairly consistently and called him mountain man but Scorpius loved his hair long, enough that every time he swore he was going to cut it all off again he always changed his mind.
Matilda began to stir; she blinked her eyes open and looked around for her dads. She recognised Scorpius’ body beside her and rolled over towards him, a sweet smile growing on her face. Nobody woke up happier than Matilda did.
“Good morning, birthday girl!” Scorpius whispered, gently dislodging Albus from his chest and reaching over to pick Matilda up. She squealed in delight and babbled away as he cuddled her close.
“Da!” she said excitedly, randomly patting Scorpius’ face.
