What lies behind the cute eyes of our closest cousins?
This week I found a bunch of images of cute apes acting very human but in fact, our DNA isnât so distant from there.

Did you know, we share 98.3% of our DNA with gorillas? It doesnât really surprise me that they are able to learn, walk on two feet (bipedal) and act âhuman.â

Unfortunately, the reality is that all these species are endangered or very close to extinction. Dr. Jane Goodall, a well-known primatologist condemns any use of pet chimpanzees on social media because it will increase the illegal trade of endangered species.

A similar instance occurred when âNemoâ, the animated clownfish film was first shown in theatres. Weeks after the showing there was a surge in clownfish sales.

All apes are endangered and poaching is one of the main causes for their decline. In Central and Western Africa, âbushmeatâ is a primary food source and sometimes it is a cuisine for the wealthy. In recent times this has become much too commercialized where adult meat is used for feed and the juveniles are sold in the pet trade.

Apes are found in very dense forests in Africa and Southeast Asia, which also means there is a good opportunity for logging/oil/gas/mining trade. Due to weak law enforcement, it is difficult to protect their natural habitat which drives apes into a state of refugia. Â

Final thought - So, what can we do? Many of these animals are poached and illegally sold off to Asia as medicinal goods. So, for travelers, avoid purchasing any product that may be perpetuating illegal poaching.
