In an attempt to explain to my non fandom friend cockles lore my hand slipped and I made a [redacted because you don't want to know how long this is] slide presentation on about 70% of all I know about cockles. Thought i'd share it because I spent way too long making it.

Fandom is a spiral because the show is ending. Too many people who’ve never actively been in a fandom when the parent content ended, and they’re all losing their minds, with raw spots and their feelings right at the surface getting hurt too easily.
Bronlies are losing their shit over the show being ruined– which, granted, they’ve been screaming that for, like, ten years. “KRIPKE’S VIIISSSSIIIOOONNNNNN!!!!!” They’re also 1) wanting Sam and Dean to die at the end of SPN, or 2) lose all of their friends, leaving it just the two of them again, while 3) losing their shit over the theory that Baby is going to get destroyed in the finale– because they claim Baby is a character and the 3rd lead on the show– because they care more about a prop than people.
Single character stans and Bitters are losing their shit because their fave isn’t bubble wrapped and put on a pedestal for having single-handedly carried the show for years. Bronlies also jump on this bandwagon as too many of them are also Jared stans. A recent poll about who was the best actor among J2M had to be deleted when Jared stans lost their shit he was losing to both Jensen and Misha– one more example of them taking everything as a slight against their fave, despite the possibility people can and do love J2M while also objectively thinking which of them is a better actor.
Destiel fans are arguing what counts as canon and what they would consider making Destiel canon, how far it needs to go, they should be treated just like a het pair/they CAN’T be treated just like a het pair for REASONS, incrementalization versus ‘QuEErbAIting!!!!.’
These two last ones seem to be due to Fandom Olds versus younger fans, and for Fandom Olds, devolves into an argument bigger than Destiel, like, take it off the table, we’re still gonna be making the same argument and case, because not only do we KNOW our queer history– in media and in RL– many of us lived through pivotal events, like Ellen’s show getting cancelled, the damage it did to her career, she got blacklisted in the industry, the OUTRAGE across the country– and this isn’t some black&white photograph history. This was 1998. When Obama legalized marriage for LGBT+ people, my state stopped doing courthouse marriages altogether because they couldn’t refuse to marry just queer people, so they stopped it for everyone. So gay people can’t get married at the courthouse, good luck finding a church to marry you, which only leaves someone else having to be officiated so they can marry you. Hi, the year is 2020, and this is another episode of “America the Homophobic!“
On top of which, is the argument of ppl wanting their ship canon for the wrong reasons. They can scream representation all they want, but if you are demanding a specific level of explicitness before you consider it canon or else scream queerbaiting, honey, I’ve got bad news for you. There’s this thing called ‘fetishizing,’ it’s when you want a pairing canon for your sake rather than the cultural impact it’s going to have. This last one is why so many of the Fandom Olds are just wanting any form of confirmation and making it canon, like one of them reaching over to take the other’s hand, the other looking down, then they look at each other and smile, and they know and you know and it’s canon. “Dean and Anna hardly knew each other and–” and that was sex not love. Sam and Eileen were considered canon… how long before they actually kissed? Claire & Kaia? Yeah, they weren’t confirmed as canon within canon until much later in a throwaway comment. We got ‘if you go, I’ll go’ and handholding and flirting over the discussion of scars. AND THEY WERE ADORABLE.
But you have people screaming– both male and female fans– that it would ruin the entire show and Dean’s character if he came out as queer. This is both people being homophobic and bronlies who don’t want Dean with anyone but Sam– even if that means killing them to ensure it (because Bronlies think they’re canonically soulmates and would, therefore, be together away from everyone else).
Keep in mind Hugo Ateo, the actor who played Cesar Cuevas, has a very hard time getting queer roles– as a gay man– because he doesn’t LOOK gay. And we only know Cesar and Jesse were married because it’s in the Wikipedia. It’s not explicitly confirmed they’re married, just understood within the context they’re together. They don’t even show explicit affection to each other either.
You have fans screaming “QuEErbaiting!!!!” when there are literal queer men who have/are working on the show. Bobo Berens IS gay, but you wanna claim homophobia and queerbaiting??? Nevermind his work regarding incrementalization in media. Nevermind it’s been made clear they have not been ALLOWED to do things on the show they would like.
“But this other CW show–” CONGRATS, YOUNG PADAWAN! You have discovered how networks can treat and shape individual products differently in order to sell them! Hooray!!! There are things like genre, target audience, archetypes, and shelf life in play and differ from one project to the next! I am so proud of you for noticing there’s a strategic system in place that takes current and future profits into play! Way to think long game!
And then, on top of all that, you’ve got people who’ve basically snapped and have taken to just… lashing out, insults, mocking, condescension and belittling others. People who’ve taken to running around trash-talking their former friends over a disagreement or because they were wrong but won’t admit it and apologize, then play the wronged victim who humbly bears their cross like a tragic martyr aiming for sainthood.
Meanwhile, I’ve unfollowed the majority of people in fandom (on Twitter) save for a select few– because we’re in multiple fandoms together and talk regularly– and I keep seeing this trash fire burn while I sit back with popcorn laughing like it’s a re-run of the I Love Lucy show. Fandom Olds knew fans, particularly younger fans who’ve never experienced this before, would start to panic and spiral with it being the final season and as the ending drew closer but we did NOT expect it to spiral this hard, this fast.
And I just laugh, because. Perspective.
As much as we all love it– it’s a fictional show. The characters are not real people. Meanwhile, the world has REAL problems. Shows end! Fandoms do not! Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who? Those fandoms are still going strong, were going strong in the long periods (read: DECADES) between new material. The book Good Omens came out THIRTY YEARS AGO, but the fandom was still there when the show came out. Harry Potter (‘97-’07; ‘01-’11 ) fandom, Buffy (‘97-’03) fandom, Sailor Moon (’92-’97) fandom, Labyrinth (1986) fandom, Firefly (’02-’03; ‘05) fandom, Twilight (’05-’08; ‘08-’12) fandom– they all still exist!
The show.
The characters.
The stories.
They’re fictional.
But your actions are real.
The people on the other side of the screen are real.
