My Top Twenty Favorite Destiel Fics

In the last few months, I have read a lot of Destiel fics. A lot. So, so many.  I think it’s only fair that I list my absolute favorites, to give the authors their due and to share their amazing-ness with everybody here (plus, I just love making lists). I was going to do a Top Ten, but I have so many favorites! So instead, I’m going to list my Top Ten AU fics and my Top Ten SPN Verse fics.

Also, I’m going to link the majority of fics to DestielFanfic because that’s where I found these, and that site is just amazing!

Top Ten AU Fics

10. In The Weeds by Nanoochka - NC17- Waiter!Dean & Chef!Cas- I love how sassy Cas is in this fic. Really, the back and forth between Cas and Dean makes this fic. Well, that and the hot sex.

9. The Ghosts of Blackthorn Hall by linoresearch - NC17- Jane Eyre AU - This was the first AU I read and it really opened my eyes to the possibilities of AU. Really well-done, atmospheric, romantic and hot.

8. Peanut Butter-Pumpkin Wedding Cake by sparseparsley - NC17 - Waiter!Dean & Writer!Cas - So sweet, so cute. Love it.

7. Crossroads State by Mercy - NC17- Mechanic!Dean & Teacher!Cas - My favorite thing about this fic, actually, is how Cas gets involved with Balthazar before he and Dean admit their feelings for each other. It makes for realistic angst and I do love angst!

6. Hello Night by almaasi - NC17 - Demon!Dean & Priest!Cas - I mean… who doesn’t want to read this?

5. Kiss You When It’s Dangerous by zoemathemata - NC17 - Hunter!Dean & Cop!Cas - This is a great AU and a great case fic. It’s just so well-written.

4. Have Love Will Travel by squeemonster - NC17- Stripper!Dean & Writer!Cas - The story is great, the slow-building romance is great and dear lord, the sex is great.

3.Taking Liberties Verse by cadigan - NC17 - Hunter!Dean & Aristocrat!Cas - 18th century France. The historical detail is fantastic, the case is intriguing and the secondary characters are full-fleshed. Plus, Ruby/Anna! This story made me long for more historical AU’s, it is so good.

2. Shootin’ You Straight by rockstarpeach - NC17 - Rockstar!Dean & Office Worker!Cas - From sex to love, this fic really does the angst and slow-build well. And it’s in Cas’s POV, which is great.

1. Metaphysical Gravity by zoemathemata - NC17 - Pub Owner!Dean & Vamp!Cas - This fic, you guys, this fic! It’s a Dark Shadows AU, but even if you’ve never seen or heard of Dark Shadows, this story is fantastic. Zoemathemata is a master of plotting and tension. And the historical flashbacks? Wonderful. I love this fic.

Top Ten SPN Verse Fics

10. When Charlie Met Cas by riseofthefallenone - NC17 - I love Charlie and I love the idea of her and Sam scheming to get Dean and Cas together, so this fic is perfect. And funny!

9. Outrun My Gun by misachan - NC17 - A rewrite of Season 2. This is so angsty and so lovely.

8. The Law of Conservation of Energy by peroxidepest17 - PG - This fic was so good. There’s a case and emotions and oh, it’s just so sweet!

7. Thursday’s Child by strangnessandcharm - NC17- EndVerse - I have a weakness for the EndVerse, I really, really do. What would happen if Future!Dean managed to defeat Lucifer? This fic is a great look into that possibility.

6. The Dance of Inanna by peppermentwind - NC17 - Season 8 fic, which means Benny! And Kevin! And Sam and Benny becoming friends! Really, all the characters in this fic are fantastically written, and this fic is at times so funny, and so angsty, I just love it.

5. The Feast of All Saints Saga by oselle - NC17 - EndVerse! Such a great EndVerse fic! Read it! Prepare yourself for pain, but read it!

4. The Mirror by CloudyJenn - M - The idea of this fic is so intriguing and done so well! And Dean, as he slowly realizes what the universe(s) is trying to tell him, as well as what his own feelings are screaming, is written really convincingly. Every aspect of this fic is wonderful.

3. Except Thou Bless Me by architeuthis - NC17 - BAMF!Cas! This is so good and so sexy. I love it!

2. Redemption Road by Various - NC17 - Speculative Season 7. This is the most epic of all epic fics. The amount of work and cooperation that must have gone into this, I just… wow. Amazing.

1. Epilogue by Jayne L/serrico - NC17 - Endverse/2009. This is the sexiest fic I’ve read, but it’s the characterization of Future!Cas that makes this my absolute favorite fic. He is just so.. realistically broken but he loves Dean, even if the Dean he has is not his Dean. I absolutely love this fic!

“Chuck Shurley? Sure, I’ve read his books. Kinda Vonnegut, but like, Kilgore-Trout Vonnegut, you know?” Dean took another gulp of his whisky, and smacked his lips like an adult. The guy sitting beside him at the bar, however, did not look suitably impressed. In fact, he was staring down into the bubbles of his cider, not even noticing the way that Dean was smiling at him, giving him the eyes.

“I thought his stuff was pretty good, in a kinda metamodern way,” Dean added airily, and a little more loudly.

The guy only nodded gloomily. Dean almost clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth in frustration. C’mon, dude, I’m trying to impress you. Twenty minutes of talking and all Dean had to show for it was a weird first name, a series of dour stares and the strangest need to know more about this – Castiel.

Maybe he should be taking the hint, though. The bar was full of people, and Dean was bound to find someone else who might actually want to talk to him, which would make a nice change. Though Dean had the feeling that even if he got up and left, he’d still be glancing back every twenty seconds – checking to see if Castiel was still here, maybe taking a deep pull on his cider, or maybe even watching Dean…

He sighed. For some reason, this was going to be an evening lived in reference to Castiel, whether Dean was sat here on this barstool or over by the pool table or back beside the jukebox. And if he did leave this spot, he knew full well that he’d only spend his evening laughing too loudly at jokes he’d barely heard and making himself large in the room and generally trying too hard to be attractive to the person right in front of him, right now.

So he might as well stay.

“He’s my father,” said Castiel, breaking into Dean’s thoughts unexpectedly. It was only the fourth or fifth time he’d spoken beyond monosyllables since Dean had sat down next to him, grinning warmly, resting one hand on the bar and letting the other spread wide over his own thigh. Castiel’s voice still took Dean aback with its roughness.

“Chuck Shurley,” Castiel clarified, looking over at Dean when he received no response. Dean blinked back to reality. “He’s my father.”

“Wow, really?” Dean said, trying not to sound too sceptical. He’d heard a thousand take-me-to-bed lies, but this was one of the weirder ones. Not least because Castiel really didn’t seem interested at all in actually taking Dean to bed; he just didn’t have the look in his eye, the tension in his body. Maybe he was really telling the truth.
