a case against people-pleasing
because i love yâall, iâm sharing my familyâs recipe for apple tea (traditional fall/winter drink in west asia, turkey, and many areas of the balkans)
itâs like a more delicate version of apple cider and i basically live off of this stuff when the weather starts to cool!
Apple Tea (for two)
1 large apple or 2 small, shredded (you can use a cheese grater)
3 cups water
1-2 cinnamon sticks
2-3 pc clove (optional)
honey to taste
1 tsp of lemon juice (add at end)
green tea (optional! the lebanese version usually calls for green tea but i actually prefer it without. up to you!)
throw it all in a pot and let it simmer on a low temperature for an hour or so. while itâs simmering, it will also make your home smell delicious! (if you make it with green tea, add the tea at the end, about five minutes before taking it off the heat so the flavor doesnât become bitter from oversteeping). strain into your cups and enjoy hot.
end result:
Today I woke up with the urge to make cozy recipe cards, so please enjoy this.
Making this for the first time this season, I love this recipe!
You are both stars, donât forget. When the stars exploded billions of years ago, they formed everything that is this world. The moon, the trees, everything we know is stardust. So donât forget. You are stardust.
BEFORE SUNRISE (1995)
the concept and idea of âyou can always start trying to be a better personâ is extremely important to me both in media and irl and i continue to be deeply deeply disturbed by the trend on this site pushing that these ideas in media are bad writing or even morally reprehensible
because theyd rather someone stay terrible or just straight up die than become a better personÂ
from a compassionate point of view itâs deeply distressing and from a pragmatic point of view itâs outright frustrating
itâs fucked up.Â
What is the most important step a man can take?
The next.
I think part of the pushback about this is the idea that, to âredeemâ bad people, their victims must first forgive them for unforgivable acts.
This is false. No one is obligated to forgive you. You can learn from your mistakes and become the best, kindest person on earth, and the people youâve hurt still wonât forgive you, and youâll have to accept that. And that doesnât mean you arenât allowed to grow. Because we arenât just âpureâ or âsinfulâ, weâre complex.
If there is one thing I hope to teach my kids, itâs that there are no bad people, only people who do bad things.
I just watched a show where a character reformed and people wrote that they wished she was punished more or died. Like they said it was a major problem with the writing of the show because she didnât deserve redemption. I thought it was beautiful, everyone deserves to be redeemed.
I watch people write constantly that characters can never change, sometimes I even do it myself as a joke, but I truly believe, down in my soul, that anyone can change. They can stop. They can make amends. They can become a better person. The past may not be forgiven, but people can always change.
Can we just appreciate how beautiful this fanart is?

Tips from a Beta Reading Writer
This one's for the scenes with multiple characters, and you're not sure how to keep everyone involved.
Writing group scenes is chaos. Someoneâs talking, someoneâs interrupting, someoneâs zoning out thinking about breadsticks. And if youâre not careful, half your cast fades into the background like NPCs in a video game. I used to struggle with this so muchâmy characters would just exist in the scene without actually affecting it. But hereâs what I've learned and have started implementing:
⨠Give everyone a job in the scene â¨
Not their literal jobâlike, not everyone needs to be solving a crime or casting spells. I mean: Why are they in this moment? Whatâs their role in the conversation?
My favourite examples are:
The Driver: Moves the convo forward. They have an agenda, theyâre pushing the action.
The Instigator: Pokes the bear. Asks the messy questions. Stirring the pot like a chef on a mission.
The Voice of Reason: "Guys, maybe we donât commit arson today?"
The Distracted One: Completely in their own world. Tuning out, doodling on a napkin, thinking about their ex.
The Observer: Not saying much, but noticing everything. (Quiet characters still have presence!)
The Wild Card: Who knows what theyâll do? Certainly not them. Probably about to make things worse.
If a character has no function, theyâll disappear. Give them somethingâeven if itâs just a side comment, a reaction, or stealing fries off someoneâs plate. Keep them interesting, and your readers will stay interested too.
Hey, man, c'mere. Listen. Get in real close, this is important.
You're gonna make stuff again. You're gonna make stuff you're proud of. You're gonna make stuff you're excited to share. You're going to feel that overwhelming drive to create, not just the frantic I want to want to you're stuck in now. You're going to have awesome ideas, and you're going to make them into reality. You're going to create again. You're still an artist. You're still a writer. You're still home to the same passion you had before. You'll find it again. It's not gone. It's just resting. Let it rest. You're going to make stuff again. I promise.
