The Samhain Ultramarathon | 100 Days of Witchcraft

"Etheri, why are you talking about Samhain already? It's still Spring where you live..." shhh...

October 31st is my favorite day to be a witch! I find myself looking forward to it throughout various times of the year. So, this year, I decided to make a little "challenge" for myself in the days leading up to Samhain, and I wanted to invite others to participate ^.^

Starting July 23rd, I'd like to invite you all to join me for what I'm calling "The Samhain Ultramarathon!"

The challenge itself is to touch your Craft for 100 days in a row! Starting July 23rd, the task is to do something, anything, witchy each day, counting down to October 31st. Some days can be as simple as just updating your grimoire or lighting a stick of incense, while other days can be more elaborate spells or rituals. The ultimate goal is to touch your practice at least once a day, even for just one minute, for 100 consecutive days! It'll be like a spiritual marathon... hence the name :P

I'm sharing this now, over two months out, to give anyone who may want to participate time to coordinate! If you want to share your preparations and if you want to share your "marathon experience" once the challenge itself starts, please use the tag #TheSamhainUltramarthon !

I know pinterest witchcraft inspo is nice and we all love having goals. That's great. Phenomenal, even. But also, it's important to understand our crafts will never be "finished". There is no point where we just graduate into being the best witch we could ever be and then never change again. Our crafts are continually evolving and so are we. And that's not always linear. And it doesn't always feel like progress. And no course or certification or initiation is ever going to be the "finishing touch". And that's okay. That's good even.

Just 7 low-key basics for any beginning witch:

1) learn how to dress and light a candle without burning your house down. A little oil goes a long way. A lot of oil goes right into a bad situation.

2) learn how to light and position incense so you don’t set off the fire alarms. Fans are an amazing friend. They circulate the smell of the incense to your whole living space, but also diffuses the smoke.

3) do not store your planchette on your ouija board (it’s like leaving your house unlocked).

4) make sure you research oils before you diffuse them if you have animals. I.e citrus straight oils or citrus oil in oil blends make dogs sick and lily oil can kill cats.

And by the gods don’t diffuse banishing oil because you’ll end up with a pepper spray situation.

5) you don’t absolutely need a holder. You just need to soften the bottom of a candle enough (yes with fire) and it will stick to a surface. A flame resistant surface (see rule one about accidentally burning down things).

6) don’t poison the earth with a ring of salt on the grass. Ashes from incense or powdered egg shells works the same. And add nutrients to the soil.

Salt inside, not outside.

And 7) if you live in an apartment or house that will not be friendly to any burning, make your favorite herbs into infusions. You can use them on their own, or mix different ones easily, for any desirable effect. Unlike burning the herbs, smoke detectors shouldn’t go off unless you spray right at them. (Watch for mold in the bottle).

Oh sweet! Boosting the Tumblr community and also yea, Im thinking of organizing a Discord space. I wanna do some research into some less hierarchical ways of moderating a server first because I want to avoid being in a seat of unique power as much as possible, but im glad to know there's interest and ill try to get on that.

Ive been in and out of the ER lately and struggling severely with my health, but I really wanna manifest a culture of decolonizing in a community made with racially and ethnically marginalized people at the center. I wanna see what we can imagine together. And I mean that as more than a bunch of buzzwords or a virtue signal.

Im also super open to collaboration and help in imaginging and bringing to life a new space. However many folks wanna get on board!

Im interested in a poc-specific space

when it comes to discord servers in particular some degree of “someone has to own the server” and “some people are more equipped to handle janitorial positions than others” is inevitable. imo the devil is mostly in how moderator positions are framed, as “authoritative” rather than as voluntarily doing extra work for the sake of the larger group (my partner @halflightprince is an anarchist and we’ve had these sort of conversations before)

I think we need to bring local shrines back. Not in the sense of like, a church, but somewhere in a local community where offerings to the spirits, fae, deceased loved ones, can be left. not too dissimilar to community shrines to local spirits in Japan.

Ime (I live and do local land-based magical practice in the south of England, have also lived in France and a few places around the US) these exist in loads of contexts, they’re just rarely Designated As Such – expanding my perspective on this has been a joy! And you can set one up, or make your local one A Thing, way easier than you might think.

I probably notice one at least once a day when I leave the house these days – I think when you start looking for them they start popping up everywhere. There are at least three or four working communal shrines/altars in my nearest big public park that’ve been there for years; someone left petition candles to Oshun and St Michael at the base of a local oak tree a few weeks ago; there’s a DIY memorial with names of babies who died in infancy hanging from a tree in my old neighbourhood; my current neighbourhood’s got a Luigi-Mangione-As-Saint street mural that’s pulled in loads of associated graffiti, lots with explicitly spiritual messages or symbols.

Most common ones I notice are: stone piles/cairns left at crossing places, roadside memorials, wishing wells and fountains, statues that’ve acquired their own good luck rituals from visibly rubbed spots, padlock bridges, people leaving photos or messages in mini free libraries/food cupboards, graffiti and street sticker hotspots that take on their own lives and specific purposes/vibes, memorials/sigils/spiritual symbols carved into specific trees and park benches, statues or displays in community gardens/allotments, clooties/stones/flowers/misc stuff decorating big or communally placed trees.

If you leave a few ribbons tied around a tree you like, or some flowers by a forgotten statue, that’s as good as a sign that says ‘leave a stone here to remember someone you love’ (which also works). People love a DIY shrine and still 100% have instincts for it even if they’re not thinking of it as spiritual/religious.
