IDK man even while the homestuck women are obviously incredibly relatable to so many people their trauma is very hyperspecific "raised by a magic dog on an island completely isolated for 13 years then spent the next 3-6 being punished by the entire universe for wanting to be happy with her friends" "developed a serious alcohol addiction in a vain attempt to try to connect to her long dead mother while dealing with the trauma of being one of the last two people on earth" "was forced to kill other children to appease her monster mom and was actively encouraged by her society to be a terrible person to those that were perceived less than" and once you separate them of that plot specific context you're either left with an incredibly heart wrenching fic about dealing with alcoholism, neglect, csa trauma, ect or like. shitty fanon mirrors of these girls that reduce them to their most basic interpretations so you can have a coffee shop au. and im not saying its IMPOSSIBLE but i am saying its a pretty daunting task to try and balance the two so most people end up defaulting to yet another davekat confession fic. its easy and palatable

In other news, at least a third of Scots Wikipedia was just exposed as flat-out rubbish created with the best of intentions

A certain user on Scots Wikipedia has been contributing to the site for almost a decade. They made hundreds of thousands of edits across approximately 20,000 articles. They were even made one of the main administrators.

Turns out very little of it was actual Scots. The editor in question is not fluent in Scots (and never claimed to be). The user seems to have written in English, and then used an online English-to-Scots dictionary (and not the best one out there) to translate word-by-word. The grammar was straight English, and the first translation was always the one used. When there wasn’t a translation, either it was left in English or the editor came up with a word themself (i.e. misspelled it to make it look more “Scottish”). A good deal of articles were just this user’s “Scotsification” of the corresponding articles on English Wikipedia. And there were relatively few actual Scots speakers editing the site, so there was nobody to rein it in.

In other words, this person is singlehandedly why many people think Scots is “just a funny dialect of English”, because they’ve been passing off actual mangled English as Scots for years.

Though this was first pointed out on the Scots wiki in 2016 (and the editor never responded), nothing happened until it was popularized by a Reddit post. The comments are… typical Reddit, and unverifiable/untrue rumors are starting to pop up about the editor, so be wary. And now there’s a discussion trying to go on on Wikimedia Meta-Wiki regarding what to do about this. Unfortunately it’s been flooded by Redditors, who are making it more difficult for actual Wikimedia community members to come to a decision.

The editor in question is not a troll. They thought they were doing a good thing the whole time, claiming they started when they were 12 and got deep into the habit. They have realized the error of their ways, apologized, and stepped down. The majority of their edits still stand, but numerous native Scots speakers have said they’re gonna help fix it. So that’s good.

This is not from Scots Wikipedia. This is from Middle English Wikipedia, which is currently in Wikimedia Incubator (where baby Wikimedia projects grow until they’re deemed worthy of a full site). Unlike Scots, Middle English has no native speakers anymore.
