does logh have any sore thumb glaring flaws? sorry, that makes no sense. i mean, there's some shows that have a whole lot of problems all the way through so that those problems are very expected, just part of the show's status quo. but some shows have one or two flaws that are so different or more disappointing than the common flaws that they stick out like a sore thumb.

Oh! No that makes perfect sense and tbh it’s good that you clarified because otherwise I would have fed you exactly the line about the Nine Million Flaws Woven Into The Very Fabric Of This Boring Opera.

Um, the sore thumb flaws to me are 1) invisibility/underwriting of women + POC (and most elusive of all, WOC !) in a story nominally fascinated by social justice as key to social stability and sustainability; there are just these huge lacunae of experience and imagination that the show kind of lumbers around, occasionally brushes up against in entrancing near-misses, and then oh whoops we’re back to sterile endless hellscape of uhhhhh wine-and-coffee-night in the undergrad political theory bar again… 2) I don’t know, it’s sort of awkwardly… paced? And like, embarrassing? We might be getting back to background texture things but it’s just not a series that excels at like, mm, either economy of storytelling OR charm in execution. Like it takes the time to go down to the ground for a two-parter about minor characters we’ll never see again tragically falling in love across enemy lines, but that two-parter… is the tale of minor characters we’ll never see again tragically falling in love across enemy lines, beat, beat, beat, beat. That’s not true of the main storylines, which are uneven but frequently satisfying and sometimes kind of zany, but it is a show that WANTS to believe itself capable of coloring in a rich larger universe, in which our heroes are mere supernaturally-prominent narrativium eddies who give shape to the whole, and it is… not that.

ETA: Fuck, I can’t believe I forgot about evil cultist subplot and I can’t bring myself to leave it out of the post entirely, so I’m putting this as a memorial to my shame. There are evil cultists. In lieu of, um, terrorists of any stripe with appropriate or inappropriate historical analogues. It’s just Earth Illuminati. Instead of a outer space conspiracy controlling our lives down on earth: an earth conspiracy controlling all of outer space. I don’t know. I thought I minded them but I must not have minded THAT much. Weird!!

in response to 2) one of the interesting things here, is that a lot of that stuff was added.  Kessler’s involvement in the burned earth tactic, and the minor characters falling in love across enemy lines, were anime-original.  Jessica Edward’s political campaign was summarized in about a paragraph, while Kircheis putting down the rebellion was a few pages of telling, not a full episode.  The episode with the bomber, and the episode with the Actress, were both moved forward from the prequels.  

If you noticed, they almost entirely stopped doing the expanded universe episodes after episode 16 (the end of the first book).  From there on, we were back to just focusing on our byzantine cast of main characters, with a few scattered scenes about the common man at most, maybe a few of those conversations at the bar on Phezzan.

It’s an interesting choice, y’know?  It would have been interesting if they’d continued to try and develop the world further, do the “now here’s how this is affecting the lives of average people”, but then again it would have been easy to fuck up, fill in gaps that didn’t need to be filled.  Much easier just to stick to the script which Tanaka laid out, which is incidentally pretty much what the new show is doing from the start, and is frankly serving as a much better introduction for.  

By “beat, beat, beat, beat”, do you mean it was too fast-paced/cliche?

I’ve been watching through the Gaiden, and just got to this little scene,

Gee, despite how Reinhard then talks about how he’ll learn to value the lives of his men, Reinhard really didn’t learn, did he?

I have to ask

Are there any other LoGH fans here that are really, really big fans of My Conquest is the Sea of Stars?  

Because it always felt like a total disaster to me, the only characters we’re given any reason to care about in the whole damn movie are the imperial gunners, and maybe Yang.  Despite the main focus of the movie being Reinhard, we’re given almost nothing about who he actually is, why we should give a damn about this icy, arrogant blond, except that his political rivals don’t like him and are even more smug, and that he’s a smart guy.  Also, what the hell were they doing jumping around to all those side characters who never come back ever again (Brunhild gunners, Brunhild bridge bunnies), and seemingly trying to cram in as many cameos as they can, when they should be trying to just introduce the main cast.  

If you don’t generate interest in your characters, and if you don’t have thrilling action, and if you don’t really get into the stakes of the fight (How important is Iserlohn?  Is it just one of many border fortresses that happens to be a main point of contention for border wars, or is it, say, the only path between the two warring powers and the key to the whole war?), how does your audience watch it?

It took me a whole month before I decided to continue on to Overture to a New War on account of “it’s a classic, I should probably give it one more shot”, then fell in love.  

I’d like to just start people new to the show on Overture to a New War, but its plot just goes straight from MCitSoS which could confuse newcomers.

Even now, coming back to it knowing the series, it’s still pretty damn boring.

The only good thing I can say about it is that it turned me onto Bolero.

Modern au Zeke would run a baseball club at Eren’s middle/high school, loads of kids flock to it even if they don’t play baseballs because he’s kind to everyone and brings lunches for them.

Eventually he runs more clubs everyday of the week so kids don’t have to play baseball to be around him. He helps with their homework, let’s them vent to him while he gives advice and is overall the chills while big brother

since i forgor everything after nearly ten years away, revisiting the early phantom troupe interactions through yorknew really puts into perspective how much the troupe’s original members function as a cult in a suicide pact. none of the OG have ever been shown to have earthly attachments outside of each other. i think that’s by design! if they’re not sowing chaos and killing, then they’re not getting sarasa justice. they’re not doing what they agreed to when they barely hit puberty. it is, in a sense, a betrayal of the ideals they agreed upon when they believed living wasn’t worth it.

but nobunaga’s character proves that they do want earthly tethers! he wanted to adopt gon as a protege and friend, but could not do it out of the confines of his relationship with the troupe. now he’s making moves on hinrigh, but any romantic intentions are predicated on the notion that no one can betray the phantom troupe even though hinrigh thinks he already betrayed him through his deal with who he thought was hisoka.

and now that we know that bonolenov not only bamboozled hinrigh but also killed hinrigh’s friend, the self-cannibalizing structure of the phantom troupe will inevitably consume nobunaga as well bc eventually, it will come out that hinrigh betrayed the troupe, even if hisoka literally had nothing to do with it. it wouldn’t surprise me if bono or chrollo killed hinrigh by virtue of hinrigh being a nuisance.

all because what? some kakinese mafia twink thought he could avenge his dead friend? the reality of the phantom troupe is that it won’t allow you to love or be loved by others, even tho nobunaga is literally human and has shown that he can love.

but to be in the troupe means paying with blood. sometimes your own, but mostly with the bonds you could have forged. these people literally never grew up bc of their grief. now they can’t love people outside of the troupe, get married, or be parents bc they think it’s a betrayal of their principles.

but sarasa would never have wanted this for them, and that’s what really hits. these people are capable of love, but won’t love others outside their suicide club bc they think they owe it to sarasa. but they don’t! because grief is something you can move on from!

Seeing my poor zeke being mischaracterized by many as being inherently evil and born with a lack of empathy 😭 as if it weren’t a coping mechanism. As if he weren’t brought into the world for the sole purpose of being a savior to the eldian people, then twisted and molded by everyone around him, including ksaver and magath. Forced into shapes he wasn’t meant to occupy like water in so many different containers, subjected to marleyan indoctrination, made to hate himself and, at once, made to both hate and be desperate to save his people. He shows he has empathy and realizes his mistake only at the very end. But by then, it’s too late.

And to add to this, zeke’s story sheds so much light on the complications of parenthood and parental figures. I think grisha, dina, and ksaver all loved and cared for zeke genuinely. But parental love doesn’t absolve them of projecting their own desires and expectations onto him. There’s something so familiar about zeke’s bitterness, his resentment toward his own parents, the blind acceptance of ksaver’s worldview, the guilt.

In my head, Hilda and Reinhard are an older woman/younger man couple. I keep forgetting that Hilda is actually younger than him. It's been months, and my brain still hasn't updated the fact that she's younger. There's something about Reinhard that makes everyone around him seem much older. Even Kircheis gives off "older brother" vibes, despite them being the same age

so cruel and twisted that Zeke never got to be anyone's weird uncle even though he is so clearly meant to be one. yeah that's my uncle Zeke he smokes two packs a day and every sunday he goes to the cemetery to piss on grandpa's grave. he's bisexual and loves to lie. which is why he's gotten divorced twice. from the same person. he has three cats and one of them is named after my dad. dad fucking hates it. yeah it's hilarious. lmao.

Say what you want about Reinhard, but at least he didn't become a misogynist when he turned 12 and suddenly started hating his sister and blaming her for everything.

Blocking should be a tool for safety, not a declaration of war. People use it to protect their peace, set boundaries, and curate their space—and that’s valid. i think griffith's bishounen shoujo-inspired design makes berserk's modern audience automatically assign him as feminine/"woman-coded" when in-universe he is very good at subscribing to and performing masculinity. he is an undefeated war commander, he wears masculine clothing, he is very much good at "masculine" things. he just has a pretty face and has long hair and is probably more "feminine" compared to the fucking hulking mass that is guts but at the end of the day he is still very masculine.

he is also a social climber. his dream requires him to be a social climber. he knows the ways of the court and plays politics very well. being a man, he's also internalized the political landscape of the time. he's internalized misogyny. which is why it makes sense to me that as femto, he'd go as far as to rape casca. all events leading up to the eclipse made him feel so endlessly emasculated: he is unable to fight, hold a sword, defend himself. his nightmare is live as a disabled man while his old soldiers go on battles/adventures of their own, leaving him behind. so how does he, newly reborn and powerful, assert that power over guts, who he perceived as betraying him/compromising him? he rapes casca, the woman he perceives as guts', because women are seen as men's property and only an extension of men. patriarchy hinges on women's subordination to men and enables the rape of a woman as a way to attack the fathers/brothers/husbands of their lives. the eclipse rape ultimately is griffith's attempt at hurting guts, as explicit and controversial as it is. do you think that i'm cruel? when canonically, he is, and he's not exempt from going as far to rape a woman in a world where that rape is very much socially enabled.

I’m not trying to start anything nor am I saying that Griffith and casca weren’t friends pre-eclipse. I am actually a firm believer that Griffith and casca were good friends, at least before guts. But I want to remind you all that this is not how friends treat friends.

I’ll try to reconsider if someone gives me a legitimate, thoughtful explanation for why this is not at best ignorance on Griffith’s part and at worst a purposefully misogynistic humiliation ritual (and regardless, it is still extremely misogynistic. It could have been anyone but we ALL know he chose casca specifically because she is a woman). I, and many others, especially POC and women, find it extremely difficult to read Griffith’s actions towards casca as entirely non malicious when this is the second impression we get of his relationship with casca, the first being him ordering her around. The narrative establishes his superiority to Casca before we get to know either of them. I think that is important.

I do not think POC, especially black and brown people are “blowing it out of proportion” when they see offense in art like that one movie promo of Griffith staring at casa in a bikini, while she covers herself with an embarrassed look on her face.
