High line, an abandoned train station that is now a nycity park that overlooks the Hudson river. I decided to stop, sit down and peel an orange. The new Yorkers do not like it when you look them in the eyes so I was looking down. Staring at my favorite shoes. A pair of mustard color boots with a small wooden heel that I bought three years ago. More or less. Suddenly I saw the heel is peeling on one shoe. I put one leg on the other knee to take a closer look. I haven't noticed they'd gotten so old. The closer I look the more flaws I see. Stains that were caused by frozen raindrops in Amsterdam and all the winters we have been through. Cracks on the heel from walking too much in Berlin and Tel Aviv and bruises from different situations in life, that most of them I've probably forgot. When I bought them I was still a soldier, I just started a job in a jewelry stand at the mall . One of the girls who worked there that in the future she will be known as my dear friend and one of the most special and courageous women I have met, Helen or as I call her- the adorable Helen. Wanted to buy a pair of boots. She called me from the store across the stand so I would help her choose one of two pairs. Meanwhile I tried on one of the shoes that were lying in the store, just a normal black boot. I thought. "I have those also in blue and mustard" said Tali the sales lady, actually, she was a business administration student. "No, I'm just looking." , "come on" and then she said the punch line of every typical Israeli sales person" I won't charge you" with a smile. Tali knew her business, I tried them on, mustard color? Sudden the only thought I had in my mind was how perfect they are for New York in the winter and I bought then right on spot. I've never admit to anyone what was the real reason behind this purchase. I got back to the stand , "what was I thinking?am I crazy or what? I just spent a month salary ". probably I'm crazy, just a tiny bit. But I'm here in nycity and I'm wearing the mustard boots. They are not perfect and they will never be, so does the owner. I have scars and bruises that I got when I was on my way to somewhere. However this is the a part of creating a path, eventually we will get there,( if we are lucky then sooner than later). We just need to take the first step
