me && a friend have been working on a mastermind naegi thing where sayaka is the mole/assistant just for fun && i wrote a thing i actually really like. anyway, i don’t have anywhere to post it so you guys can read it here if you want. i didn’t include the headcanons or world building, but i think it kind of makes sense without them.
The rhythm of the rain seems to fall in twelve-eight time, Sayaka notices. It’s steady and it’s fast. A waltz between the clouds and the grass beneath her feet. It’s always raining, but she doesn’t mind - she loved how the sky seemed to be an accompaniment to her thoughts. A live band playing in the background, and her at center stage.
She always wanted to be a singer.
The soundwaves seeming to flow like the sand in an hourglass. Time passing quickly as she sings scales and skips rocks on the small river in front of her. Missing class like she always does to sit and write music, and she would have stayed there all day… until it happened.
The snapping seems to echo across the river, like the branches in a storm - breaking against the weight of the world. It shakes her to her core and she wonders what it could be. Sticking her notebook in her backpack, she quietly walks to the side of the river.
“Naegi?”

He liked the way it felt. He didn’t mean to do it, sure, but that didn’t mean he didn’t like it any less. The crunch of the bones, the raw power from being able to snap its neck that easily… and there it lay, a disheveled pile of feathers limp in his hand, a helpless look on its face. A sadistic smile across his own- almost like a stretched mask of a demon. A piece of clay shaped into something out of a horror movie.
And it terrified him.
His horror, his complete shock, and his feeling of relief all wash away almost immediately at the sound of her voice.
“Maizono?”
He drops the swan with a loud thud, feathers quickly rising and catching in the air.
“You uh - you saw that, huh?”
-
She scans the area up and down before speaking, eyes locked on the dead bird at his feet.
“Did you kill it with just your hands?!”
“Not on purpose! I-I was just! I was… Yeah. I did.”
She’s silent for a moment, twirling blue hair between long, slender fingers and mouth puckered like she just ate sour candy. It’s silent for a while before she speaks again.
“Show me.”
“What?”
“Show me. How’d you catch a swan and break its neck? That’s not easy to do.”
He raises an eyebrow, looking at the expression on her face. Starstruck, almost like he was a celebrity. Something about it filled him with a sense of awe. Sayaka Maizono has always seemed like such a quiet, nice girl, and yet she looked at him like he just performed a miracle, like he was a hero.
He wanted to impress her, he wanted to take her in his hand and show her the world. He didn’t have a talent. He couldn’t sing like Sayaka, or piano like Kaede, or even play baseball like Leon, but he wanted to put on a show, and he wanted Maizono to be his backup singer.
Afterall, she always wanted to be a star.
