Smallville · 1x01 “Pilot” & 10x04 “Homecoming”

I love the final scene in “Homecoming” so much and to me it’s one of the most touching, romantic scenes in television but something I only recently started thinking about is how directly it parallels the final scene in the pilot.

In the first episode, Lana told Clark that she would save a dance for him if he came to the homecoming ball but he is unable to make it because of the events of that episode. In the final scene, she comes to see Clark and they dance — but then it’s revealed it’s just Clark’s daydream and he’s still alone. It’s a poignant moment for Clark. In “Homecoming” he and Lois miss their dance at the Smallville High reunion but in the final scene he surprises her with a dance in the barn.

And I just keep thinking about the fact that Clark loves Lois so much … he gifted her with his own romantic fantasy. He knows exactly how meaningful giving her that dance is because it’s what he so desperately wanted the object of his affections to do for him all those years ago.
