SHINee has helped me learn to process grief, seriously.
When my mom died, I didn't avoid the things that reminded me of her and try to hide my pain from everyone. No matter how hard it was, I talked about her, looked at her pictures, and kept the things that reminded me of her in the open.
My instincts were to run away from the tough feelings, but I knew that the more I avoided her memory, the harder it would hit me and the more extreme the reaction would be. So now, a year later, I still miss her, but she's been with me this whole year. I never had to hide from her memory.
When Jonghyun passed, it hurt to see him, but it hurt worse to ignore him- so I watched old videos and looked at pictures and listened to albums. Eventually it didn't hurt as much. And seeing SHINee keep him with them to this day really helped me understand how to exist in the world after you've experienced loss.
The anniversary of my mother's death is in a week, and I've been feeling a little sad, but I still feel close to her. I'm very grateful for that.
My favorite by far 🥰

Text reads "It's no accident that:
You learned about Helen Keller instead of WEB DuBois
You learned about the Watts and LA Riots, but not Tulsa or Wilmington.
You learned that George Washington's dentures were made from wood, rather than the teeth of slaves.
You learned about Black Ghettos but not Black Wallstreet.
You learn about the new deal but not red-lining.
You learn about Tommie Smith's first in the 1968 Olympics, but not that he was sent home the next day and stripped if all his medals.
You learned about "Black Crime" but white criminals were never lumped together and discussed in terms of their race.
You learned about "states rights" as the cause of the Civil War, but not that slavery was mentioned 80 times in the articles of secession.
Privilege is having history rewritten so that you don't have to acknowledge uncomfortable facts.
Racism is perpetuated by people that refuse to acknowledge this reality.
End description]
I'd like to add "You learned about the "good whites" that helped free the slaves via the underground railroad, but not about how Harriet Tubman saved 700 slaves in one day, all the while rising getting caught and returned to her former slave owner, which is more than the underground railroad saved the whole time it existed. "
"You learned about the "good whites" that owned slaves and gave them parties every week but not the rape, using their skin for leather, using their hair for furniture, torturing pregnant slaves and making bets on if the baby or mother would die first, raping the strongest male slave to put all the other slaves "in their place", cannibalism of slaves, etc."

me choosing my career happened in this exact fashion. yes.
imagine hiring an assassin and they talk to you in a customer service voice
"Hello, how can I help you today? Wonderful, can I get a first and last name? And how would I spell that? Awesome. And would you happen to have an address for this individual? And place of work? Fantastic.
Now, I'm going to give you a number, and I'm going to ask that you send in a photo of your target alongside any additional information you may have- family members, security, combat training, medical conditions, just anything you can think of that might be helpful.
Wonderful, you are all good. All we need now is a piece of government-issued ID, for insurance purposes, and a location for payment pickup. We accept cash, gold, processed uranium, and etransfer.
I'm sorry, we don't take american express.
Good, okay, so it looks like we are all set- when the job is complete, you will be notified VIA discreet codeword that a stranger will whisper to you on a crowded street.
We do not issue receipts, but if you'd like, I can arrange for a specific breed of tropical flower to be sent to your home address. Our associates will be able to validate it should the need arises.
And is that everything you were looking for today? Great! Thank you for coming to us. Have a nice day!"
Alternatively,
"I'm sorry sir, but I'm afraid the Pope is a high-status target that is beyond our area of service.
Yes, I- no, I'm sorry, I'm not able to do that for you.
Okay. Okay. Yes, I understand.
Sir, if you're going to use that sort of language, you should know that our HR department does operate in a hands-on capacity.
Wonderful. You take care."
