Everything is tagged by fandom and character’s full name, and ship name if applicable.  For crafts and sewing I usually have a specific tag for the project as well.  Fic posts, including WIPs and previews, are tagged by title.  I tag hate/critical posts with “anti [name]” or “anti [fandom]”.  Asks will be answered publicly unless requested otherwise and with the same level of politeness/rudeness you provide.

I watched a movie based on an 80s cartoon where the main character is literally named He-Man and it has more named AND background women than The Mandalorian and Grogu, a movie made from a show in the 2020s

Extra disappointing when I think every episode of The Mandalorian had a woman in a speaking role and/or directly involved in the plot.

My new Cara Dune cosplay! A variation on her canon outfit and a "what if" she had a more casual look while off duty. I was heavily inspired by Colonel Ward's look.

All pieces were made by me except the black shirt, boots, marshal badge, and New Republic patch. The jacket is new and everything else was from my season 1 Cara Dune cosplay. It is fully lined, has inner and outer pockets, a fake pocket on one arm (I want to add greeblies in the future), and the cotton twill I used sewed like a dream and it actually quite warm. Also, I finished the whole thing in 10 days while also finishing up the school year and approximately 1 billion pieces of paperwork. (0/10 do not recommend, but dank farrik am I motivated by a deadline.)

This cosplay is surprisingly comfortable (unlike when wearing the full armor getup) and I got several compliments. I was the only adult in cosplay at my theater too, but wearing this makes me confident - one of many reasons I fell in love with the character of Cara Dune and still hold out that one day, she'll be recast or we'll at least get a novel or comic. For now, I'll keep cosplaying her as my way to reclaim the character for me.

Technically a spoiler by omission but....

There is no mention of Greef in the film. Meaning that we can safely assume that he's just fine in Nevarro and he comes out regularly to feed Grogu too many sweets and drop off a loud annoying toy that makes Mando sigh but he never actually disables it even though he knows how. <3

Spoiler-free Mandalorian and Grogu initial movie thoughts

I can't believe I am seeing my first new Star Wars film without my mom... but in her immortal unintentionally passive-aggressive words, "That was actually good!"

Now to be clear, when I say "good" I don't mean like season 1 was good. I mean "It's better than season 3." I mean "It made me smile. I enjoyed myself." It's pretty formulaic and safe and nothing to write home about in terms of writing or originality. But I saw my boys and it made me smile. Even more, I actually feel like I want to write again! (I feel like every time I say that it jinxes me. But I was writing fic in my head half the movie and god, it felt so good to feel that again.)

Din Djarin.... despite all the attempts to flatten his character like cardboard, make him safe and corporate-friendly and marketable, Pedro Pascal and Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder's work shines through. Does he have a character arc? Nope! He's all squeaky clean and works for the New Republic and has no moral ambiguity anymore! His fear of droids? Not remotely mentioned. But these three actors still make him the Mando we love. Hints of character still shine out and made me say, yeah, that's my man. He is 99% competent again at least and still a protective papa. Lateef's stuntwork in particular really shines and his fight scenes are badass. He has some great moments with Grogu and also starts immediately parenting another character a la Toro, this time with more success.

Grogu.... my baby boy is all grown up and I can't believe it. You know how I've been saying for years I want him to grow and mature and come in to his own? HE FINALLY DOES. I'm so proud of him. I just wanna hug and squeeze him and give him extra cookies. And then provide him with a quality education suited for his individual needs. And find him a speech pathologist.

Also I can't believe I'm saying this, but I officially like a 3D Clone Wars character. I like Rotta the Hutt. He's fun, he's unique, he's different, he's actually fleshed out.

Colonel Ward and Zeb are pretty much glorified extended cameos, but hey, it's better than Bo-Karen.

Pretty much if you go in expecting a paragon of cinema or a return to form to season 1 or 2 you're gonna be disappointed. This may be an overall positive post but there's definitely not the strongest writing going on. (I definitely have a couple posts percolating in my head about that.) But if you want to see our boys doing a fun space adventure/extended episode of the show, you'll enjoy it. If this is how we're gonna wrap up Clan Djarin's story, it's a better send off than season 3.

Edit to add that the soundtrack was fire.

Finishing up the last day of school today, then hurrying hom to hand stitch the lining to the jacket front and the sleeves before seeing Mando and Grogu in IMAX tonight. There's some little goofs here and there but it's stuff that will only bother me, and overall I'm thrilled how it came out.

My Cara jacket design has the badge on the chest instead of the belt because this was the original concept art design. It only made it to the Cara season 2 Funko Pop (presumably because toy designs have to be finalized well in advance of the show airing). Otherwise you only see it in the season 2 art book.

I've definitely made some goofs but I'm really happy with it so far!

I taped my printed stencils to the mat under my freezer paper, traced them, removed the originals, then cut out the stencil with an exacto knife. I ironed it on and painted on the first layer before going to bed, then did the second in the morning before work. As you can see it did have some bleeding but it's minor. I may paint over it in the future but I don't have the right shade right now and it's still distinctive enough what the shapes are supposed to be.

Yesterday's main task was these fuck-ass pockets. They're expandable/pleated, and the black just peeking out behind the turquoise was so much fun to design and such a pain to keep switching thread colors for lol. The pocket flaps are bound with bias tape for that black outline and the undersides are also black. I made some dumb mistakes here and there but nothing disastrous and it just means the pocket flaps are extra thick and don't wanna lay flat, so I am probably going to have to add snaps or something, but that can wait til the last minute.

I attached the fronts and backs and then took a break for dinner. After this post it's time to get back at it. I bought tickets for me and dad today so finishing the jacket (and actually pulling out the Cara pieces I'm using) are all that's left. I'm probably only halfway but I can see the finish line.

I'm excited to see my boys but I still know what kind of writing we're probably gonna get....

I don't know why I ended up doing all my "hot" tasks on the one 80 degree day of the week, but here we are.

The re-dyeing was a success!!! The lighter one is the original, the darker is after re-dyeing. It's still a smidge too blue for me compared to Cara's canon costume, which is more teal, but it is close to my cosplay Cara pants, so it works. I waaaay overbought cotton teal because I can't math, but I love this lighter shade and I'm excited to make a second jacket at some point. I've had the idea of doing a Muunilist 10 themed jacket for years so I may finally do it now.

I ended up buying new interfacing because I have lots, but it's all scraps, and this way I could be sure that the interfacing was all the same weight and not worry about piecing scraps together which I just don't have time for. Everything that needs interfaced got interfaced with my hot, hot iron in my hot, hot sewing area, because I'm trying to hold off on air conditioning as much as possible.

Thanks to my dad having a working printer, I got my stencil bases printed out for the back. I'm leaning towards the smaller Rebel insignia; I thought five inches would be enough but I didn't like it when it printed, so I did a four inch one as well. The bars are an image of Cara's tattoos that I turned into an outline in Paint.net; I went ahead and printed two so I can visualize before actually cutting out the stencil.

I started prepping the back but thought I made a big mistake, had a minor anxiety attack, realized I DIDN'T make a mistake, but decided it was definitely time to stop working for the day.

I have until Friday while doing a ton of school paperwork and also learning Golden on the trumpet to maintain my Cool Teacher status to finish so wish me luck!!

Lining is ready to go! I'm almost sad those fun pockets aren't gonna be seen, I love them.

Tonight I want to get all my twill pieces cut out so that I can dye tomorrow. Weather is supposed to be nice so I want to do it outside. With any luck I can also get the details on the back and sleeves ready and basically make it so only assembly is left. Doing the lining first was a good choice because I've already "practiced" with the directions that confused me or threw me off.

Last two days have been nonstop busy BUT I have finished two whole inner pockets for my jacket. That no one will see but me lol. Leiaaurora, the cosplayer on Instagram who I purchased the Cara patch from, often includes inner pockets with fun on-theme embroidery so I was inspired to do the same.

Friendly reminder to always check your reference images because I was totally about to reverse the silver and turquoise on that right patch inspired by Cara's stomach bars.

They've been attached to the jacket lining. I worked on all the lining pieces cut out of cotton tonight and need to cut the yoke out of the twill. I figured assembling the lining first would let me practice for the main event, which was smart, since the back pleating almost drove me into an anxiety attack lol. Giving myself only 10 days was NOT a good decision since it's also the super stressful end of the year stuff going down at work, but on the other hand I do do better with a deadline.

Next step is cutting out the twill. I divided my pattern pieces into what needs to be cut out of turquoise or black and that will be next. My plan is to finish the lining completely before cutting it all out so I can adjust as needed and apply any changes to the twill pieces. Then I need to redye the turquoise pieces before assembling the jacket.

I REALLY need to dig up my Cara pieces I'm going to use to make sure nothing needs fixed or touched up there. The chest bars on the jacket got some silver paint on my leggings already, but it just looks like wear and tear. The armor has been in storage for a while so fingers crossed nothing got messed up.
