Q&A Malec and marriage
blacknightwolf said:Hello! I was just curious about Magnus and Alec. I know they’ve been together for years now in TDA, but I can’t remember if it was ever mentioned if they were married. Would Alec and Magnus ever get married and if they were to, would either one take the others last name? I know both of their names mean a lot to them so I was wondering what the would decide! Thanks for taking the time to look at this!
Magnus and Alec would love to get married. They’re committed to the end either way, but the reason they haven’t gotten married yet is because they decided not to until there were equal privileges and rights accorded to Downworlder-Shadowhunter marriages as there are for Shadowhunter marriages. They had this discussion in Born to Endless Night, in Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy:
“Shadowhunters can marry Downworlders,” Magnus said, “in Downworlder or mundane ceremonies. I’ve seen it happen. I’ve seen other Shadowhunters dismiss those marriages as meaning nothing, and I’ve seen some Shadowhunters bow under pressure and break the vows they made. I know you would never bow or break. I know that type of marriage would mean just as much to you. I know that any promises you made me, you would keep. But I was alive before the Accords. I sat and ate and talked with Shadowhunters about peace between our people, and then those same Shadowhunters threw away the plates I ate off because they thought I irredeemably tainted whatever I touched. I will not have a ceremony that anyone looks down on as lesser. I do not want you to have any less than the ceremony you could have had, to honor your vows to a Shadowhunter. I have had enough of making compromises in the name of trying to make peace. I want the Law to change. I do not want to get married until we can get married in gold.”
Alec was quiet, his head bowed.
“Do you understand?” Magnus demanded, feeling almost desperate. “It’s not that I don’t want to. It’s not that I don’t love you.”
“I understand,” said Alec. He took a deep breath and looked up. “Changing the Law might take a while,” he said simply.
For instance. If Magnus and Alec were to get married, they would likely want to hyphenate their last name to Lightwood-Bane. Part of what it would mean for them to have equal privileges and rights is that their hyphenated name be considered valid by the Clave. Lightwood-Bane isn’t a Shadowhunter name. The Ascended have to pick Shadowhunter names, and there are no Shadowhunters whose names aren’t okayed by the Clave. So this means that the Clave would need to allow Alec to use the hyphenated name in order for it to be considered his official name. (If he used it against their wishes, they wouldn’t kick him out of the Nephilim, but they wouldn’t acknowledge it as a real last name.) It would also mean that Rafe would get to pick if he wanted to be Rafe Lightwood or Rafe Lightwood-Bane, as opposed to having to hew to the standard usage of Shadowhunter last names (which would mean he’d have to go by Lightwood).
An enormous part of Alec’s identity and also Magnus are wrapped up, in different ways, in their fight for equality, in their demands for recognition and not just tolerance, but rights. It’s why they head up the Downworlder-Shadowhunter Alliance and why that’s so important to both of them. In the end, that Alliance — it’s existence, and Alec’s leadership of it — is a huge part of what tips the balance of good and evil, more than any Institute or Conclave could ever do. Part of what make Alec and Magnus so well-suited (and part of what shows how much Alec has grown from a young man who often made snap judgments, and believed prejudices he’d been taught, to a warrior and defender of the marginalized) is that they’re not willing to accept compromises: when they get married, it’ll be in Shadowhunter gold and warlock blue, and it’ll be all the more fantastic and triumphant for that.
high school au in which alec is a jock and magnus is a loner bad boy type who secretly has a HUGE crush on him. like he's bamf and no one messes with him and he always sits alone at lunch bc people r lowkey afraid, and then like, they get partnered up on a project or something, and people watch in amazement as magnus bane, Total Badass, blushes and basically turns into a flustered mess bc "oh my god alec is so perfect! why" and alec is just. oblivious. bonus pts for them getting together happily
Sorry it took me so long! Thank you so so much for the prompt, I loved it!I … have no idea what I wrote. It’s 2000 words, which is actually some kind of a record for me? It’s been ages since I’ve been able to write more than 1000 words, so thank you for that! But I feel like I have to apologize because I have no idea what this is. I hope you like it!! Please, let me know?
Highschool hierarchy is actually, definitely a thing.

moments after their ‘break up’
i refuse to acknowledge that it was an actual break up they’re just on a break but it didn’t sound as good for a title.
prompted by an anon, thank you!
also, this was written when i was pretty much brain dead after doing three 40 page readings and having a 8am-6pm uni day, so please excuse it if it sounds like i was delusional lmao. let me know what you think :)
Alec just stood there and watched as the lift doors closed. He stared at the doors for what felt like ages, unable to move or even blink. His jaw was slack and his eyes were filled with tears. He couldn’t swallow the lump in his throat no matter how hard he tried and all he could think was how this couldn’t be happening. This just couldn’t.
Magnus stood the same way as the lift took him down to the ground floor. He couldn’t really seem to move. Even when the doors opened, it felt like he was moving in slow motion as he walked out of the Institute. It was dark out and Magnus’ fingers itched to open a portal but he felt a long walk was what he really needed.
It wasn’t a breakup, Alec thought. It couldn’t be. Magnus wouldn’t do that, they wouldn’t do that. They weren’t like that. Alec wanted all his thoughts to be true, but the overwhelming sense of despair filled him to the brim as he found his way walking towards his office.
Alec knew that both of their jobs would be hard because of the position they were in. But he thought they could make it work. Alec felt his heart clench just at the thought of not being able to sleep beside Magnus that night. He was so preoccupied with Max that he didn’t even stop to consider how torn Magnus must have been feeling.
Alec stopped just as he reached the door to his office. He held out a hand against the wall, feeling like he would fall to his knees if he kept walking. He clenched his eyes shut, trying his best to keep the tears at bay. Eventually, he was able to open the door walk over to his desk.
He slumped down into his chair and couldn’t help but let his gaze wonder to the photos he had kept on his desk. His eyes drifted to one of him and Magnus, they were in Tokyo. He remembered the elderly lady that had insisted to take the photo for them, but the only one that she had taken was one that caught them both off guard.
Alec’s hand went up to wipe his nose as he looked at the photo. They both looked so happy. Alec couldn’t remember a time in his life where he had been this happy other than with Magnus and his stomach turned in such away that Alec began to sob.
He couldn’t help it, he didn’t want to.
Suddenly, he heard a knock at the door. “Alec! You in there?” asked Jace. He had felt his stomach drop when he was holding Max’s hand in the infirmary and knew that something was wrong with Alec. Admittedly, he didn’t know how he knew. He had never felt that kind of feeling through the bond before.
Alec’s hand went up to wipe and cover his eyes as he sniffed, clearing his throat. He didn’t answer. Slowly, the door swung open and Jace stepped inside with worry filled eyes. “Hey…” he whispered. “What’s wrong?” Jace noticed Alec’s red eyes and frowned as Alec only shook his head, looking away.
“Nothing,” he replied, but his tone said differently.
“Alec, come on,” urged Jace in a soft voice. “I can feel that something’s up… Is it Magnus?” Jace’s jaw clenched as he thought of Magnus. He had trusted him not to hurt Alec. He had promised.
Alec only closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the chair. The tears were back and he didn’t try to hide them. There was no use. “I messed up,” he muttered, shaking his head in a way that let Jace knew it was bad. “I messed everything up.”
Immediately, Jace was at his side, kneeling before him. He reached forward to hug his brother tightly because there wasn’t much he knew he could do. He felt his own vision blur with tears just as Alec’s did and he only held onto him tighter.
It was only a few seconds later that Izzy had stepped into the room, unaware of what was happened. She stopped dead in her tracks just as she saw the two. Jace looked up at her and all he mouthed was ‘Magnus’ for her to understand.
Silently, she walked up to them and wrapped her arms tightly but warmly around Alec, resting her chin on his head. The three sat there, holding each other, Alec’s sobs permeating the air.
“It hurts,” murmured Alec, in between his sobs, as though to ask his siblings what on earth to do. It hurt much worse than what he had read about, much worse than what he had expected.
Jace and Izzy squeezed him tight, silent promises of comfort and love pulsing throughout their embrace.
But Magnus didn’t have anybody. He knew Catarina was busy at the hospital and that she’d given him hell for what he had done. So he didn’t call her. He didn’t call anybody.
Instead, he downed glass after glass of that whiskey he had been saving and crawled into a cold, empty bed for the night.
Back at the Institute, Alec did the same, crawling into a bed that didn’t feel like his at all.
i hope you enjoyed, let me know what you think! if you have any prompts or scenarios for me, please head over to my ask box.
in the meantime, in the event that max dies…
