mantis mouthparts source
I've reblogged this before but I'm realizing a LOT of people think insect mouths are as simple as just a pair of mandibles. As you can see, it is actually a whole device. A complete doohickey. There's a lot of bits to it.
Our lips have a ring of muscle fibers to make shapes to manipulate food and theirs have a ring of mouthparts to make shapes to manipulate food. I love critters.
do you love the color of the earthworm?

Please be nice to creatures. They may look different from us. They may look scary. But they did not choose to look this way- and with an open mind you can see the beauty in life forms different than we are. They are not movie monsters out to get you, they are just little guys trying to survive this big scary world. When given the chance, spiders can be quite cute! You can choose kindness. Choose kindness.

cradle thieves:
a dramatic scene on a tree trunk in Singapore; Leptogenys ants carry away a nestful of newborn scolopendrid centipedes. Scolopendrid mothers guard their young fiercely, so it’s likely these ants had to fight her off to steal the brood, if they didn’t kill her too.
Leptogenys are often specialist feeders on isopods or millipedes, but have occasionally been known to hunt easy prey usually not on the menu. a brooding centipede and her offspring would be highly vulnerable to attack, so it’s no surprise to me they went after a defenseless meal.
as the ants streamed down the trunk, a lichen huntsman spider wisely ignored them and their venomous stings.
Wait long enough in a mangrove swamp and you’ll see something magical. In this case, a small school of golden cownose rays.Â
