Figuring out my personal curriculum
Finally posting to my studyblr~ I'm not an aesthetic person, but I hope this'll help with my motivation! Look below the cut for my curriculum plans ☆
What I've planned so far:
Subject - Korean
Books - Hi! Korean 2A
Podcasts - tbd
Websites/Courses - tbd
Subject - Voice Acting
Books - So you want to do VO? BY Rob Marley and The Art of Voice Acting by James R. Alburger
Podcasts - tbd
Websites/Courses - Gravy for the brain or Global Voice Academy (I haven't fully committed)
Subject - Cooking
Books - Twelve Reciepes by Cal Peternell
Podcasts - tbd
Websites/Courses - Kitchn 20 day free course
I have a few ideas of potential podcasts but I want to give them a listen before I settle on one or 2 per subject~ I also might have some "electives" like drawing or doing nails~
I was listening to some HSK audio files and I realized I rely a lot on being able to read to know what they're saying. I have this problem with other languages too honestly, sometimes audio just processes slower in my head and I don't understand quite as clearly.
This is definitely something I need to improve on to improve my understanding and listening skills for Chinese.
Hi! Just popping in as a language teacher to say that listening and reading are two entirely different skills!!
Reading tends to develop faster for most people, especially if you're self studying in a country where your target language isn't that main language. It's much easier to read a textbook after all than find a native speaker to listen to!
So it's totally normal to be able to read better than you can listen!~
Focus on listening, preferably to conversations where you can get the gist of the interactions. Any reality show in your target langauge could be perfect, or just a YouTube video of something you like :)

I'm not sure if the langblr community is still active but I have to do a survey for my research paper in english. I'm writing about second language acquisition and if anybody would like to fill out the survey it would be greatly appreciated!!
My name is Chynere Reid, and I am currently conducting a survey on second language acquisition. I believe that acquiring a second language i
This post goes out to the language learners who aren't the best at accents:
There is SO much variety in pronunciation in every language, whether it's people who have spoken it all their lives or people who started learning yesterday! It's awesome that you're part of that vibrant and diverse population!
Your accent is a badge of identity -- your accent in your first language shows where you call home just the same way it does in any other language
It's always awesome to hear someone's accent in your language and know that someone from another location was interested enough to work hard to learn it!
Studying grammar and vocabulary can enrich your communication SO much more than pouring over vowels and consonants. Having a "perfect" accent will never save someone who can't ask where the bathroom is!
Being understood is always the goal (unless your passion is just understanding -- which is JUST as cool!). And your accent is very unlikely to seriously impede understanding, because:
Communication is a two-way street! Good listeners will always be happy to engage with you and work through any misunderstandings
Don't ever let someone discourage or devalue your accent! Anyone who does is probably either projecting their own fears or generally intolerant of variation. And we do not have time for that.
Three different shop employees complimented my Korean this morning >:)

Tip for people using duolingo:
There is a website called duome.eu! On it you can see fun stats about your profile and progress, or even other people's profile and progress! But that is not the point of this post.
On duome, you can see the tips and notes for all courses.
Yes, you heard me right! All tips and notes, all courses! Here's a screenshot with the english and spanish lists, for example:
Why does this matter? Aren't tips and notes useless for most languages???
A: no they are not!
Hypothetical question above is probably from someone who never knew these existed before. See, before duolingo's most recent redesign, you could see (at least on desktop/web) tips and notes on the skill you were working on! These are those!!!! Here's an example with verb aspects from the ukrainian course (with a picture of my cat to squish it down):
So that's it! That's my knowledge imparted on you all!
Remember: the website is duome.eu! Look at it for tips & notes!!!

Free PDF Workbooks for Japanese, Spanish, Korean, etc. (30+ languages)
If you’re looking to practice a bit and remember your target language better… here are tons of free worksheets/workbooks for 34 languages (Japanese, Spanish, Korean, French, German, Italian, etc, etc.)
It’s the same type of “fill in the blank” workbook across all of their languages but the magic in actually rewriting things over and over is that the words end up sticking. Plus, there are English sections where you’ll have to force yourself to remember and write the word/phrase in the target language - which is even better for your memory (called active recall - forcing yourself to remember). I’m personally a big fan of this approach and I’d do similar to pass vocab quizzes in my HS & uni language classes.
If you’re interested, give these a go.
