Joe Hills has the most correct opinion on fanart, being: he's not paying for it, so he has no say in the art direction, so do whatever the fuck you want
Counterpoint. If the boundaries are stupid, do whatever you want forever. In fact, just do whatever you want. They're not paying to direct your art of a character. Make your art.
additionally, because i don't think "if the boundaries are stupid" is necessarily a good benchmark for this bc it doesnt address a core issue here: a boundary is not a way of dictating or controlling other's behaviour. a boundary is not a moderation rule. a boundary is for how you will deal with unacceptable behaviour from the other person. a boundary is a personal limit you set for yourself.
"don't draw my character in xyz ways" is not a boundary. "don't 'main tag' explicit works" is not a boundary. "you're not allowed to write explicit fics of my cubito" is not a boundary. "don't ship me or my cubito" is not a boundary. "don't send ccs my work" is not a boundary. they're requests, at best.
"i mute/block when i come across explicit art in the 'main tag' on tumblr" is a boundary. "i will not engage with fanart that depicts me/my character in xyz ways" is a boundary. "i will block you if i see you tagging cc's in my ship art or talking about my fic in their twitch chats" is a boundary. "i will stop using this platform temporarily/permanently if people continue to do xyz because it makes me feel like shit" is a boundary (false has used this one here iirc?). "i will block you if you repeatedly come into my tumblr asks just to demand about another cc" is a boundary. "if there are any commonly used tags for ship art or nsfw art i will be blocking/filtering those tags and encourage the use of them" is a boundary. a very fucking essential one imo. (i know these are block-heavy examples lol. boundaries when you actually know someone personally are going to be more nuanced - and crucially, will not be ultimatum-y and final like an "and now i block" is. but we're talking about setting boundaries in a parasocial context here - mute/block tools are an effect way of keeping yourself safe there, and because they're boundaries, not rules, you are not owed an explanation if you, a whole ass stranger, do get blocked because of them. imo.)
a boundary has to be directed at yourself and your actions. if you cannot enforce it with your own action, then it is not a boundary - it's an expression of feeling, a request, and those are something we + ccs are absolutely allowed to have and hope people will respect and honour. there are definitely plenty of instances that will make me think you're at least a bit of an asshole if you do disregard such a request/feeling.
but open, unmoderated (meaning fandom-specific moderation) fandom spaces on social media + fic archives are not and cannot be bound to those requests, and other fans trying to go after people who "don't respect ccs boundaries" do not count as them being enforceable. if cc's want transformative fan spaces that they can lay down rules on, they need to cultivate those spaces themselves. but those rules would still only ever apply in those specific sites.
how it feels to see other peoples designs and interpretations of the same characters
What if everything gets better in 2016
Look I love unconditional devotion love stories as much as the next person, but there's really something so deliciously raw about conditional devotion.
I have served you and I have loved you for decades, but I will not give up my principles for you. You cut out part of my heart and took it with you down that path that you insist on walking, but you walk it alone. Even when the bleeding, gaping hole you left in my chest kills me, I will not follow you.
me everytime one of my seemingly non-specific homoerotic text posts breaks containment
"undertale genocide route" this "deltarune weird route" that. what the heck. where's deltarune happy route. i wanna see everyone smiling and saying "yippee"
YAHOO!!!!
you've heard of death of the author, now get ready for death of the audience: where instead of basing your reaction on a thousand uninformed opinions online, you actually read the text and engage with it
girl help there's people on this post who can't actually read my text
this is what is happening between us when i like your vent post
yeah you’re right i should just *remembers that suicide jokes worsen the suicidal ideation* go to the meeting room. perhaps i had simply missed a memo.
It’s impossible to convince everyone to retroactively use the tag system properly but as a fix-it I’m going to start tagging all my non-crossover Iron Lung posts with #just blood if anyone wants to join me?
(no hate to hail mary but the shipping has eaten the smaller fandom alive & it’s legitimately impossible to search for anything else atp)
what a great idea!
what PHM fans see
what iron lung fans see
BROWSER ADDONS MADE TO HID FILTERD POSTS WILL CUASE YOUR SHIT TO LAG SO HARD BCS OF THIS!!! THUS WHY WE HAD TO MAKE A NEW ADDON TAG!!!
I'm vehemently against fandoms being shoved out of their own tag. Don't make a new tag, the canon tag is where you're supposed to be. You're only making it harder for new and existing fans to find the community they're looking for!
Do you know what the actual etiquette is? The one that's been around since Tumblr began? The one that's been followed dutifully up until the last few years?
Once an AU becomes so prevalent it starts becoming bothersome, YOU DON'T MAINTAG THE CANON FANDOM. Yes, this is a gray area when it comes to what constitutes as bothersome. Yes, bloodymary is WAY beyond that line.
Instead of bailing on the canon tag, SPREAD THIS MESSAGE. If someone refuses to follow this etiquette, BLOCK THEM.
You owe it to yourself, to your community, and to new fans who won't know the fandom exists in some obscure tag. Stand your ground and be vocal about this etiquette.
PS-- to the AU fans who insist they won't be found without the canon tag: yes you will. People subscribe to a tag when they know that's the fandom they want. People use the REGULAR SEARCH function to discover it. If your post has canon character or franchise names in it, or even non-canon tags, a regular search will display those.
Be considerate. Acting like an ass will only make possible fans hate your AU when it's shoved down their throats.
Signed, the creator of the Gravity Falls Transcendence AU, which at one point started taking over the canon GF tag. Everyone in the community collectively understood and stopped maintagging the second it was even questionable. It's still easy to find us, we have literally lost nothing by not maintagging. Peace and love on planet earth

"lock in" is probably one of the most important phrases to enter the public lexicon in the 2020s
Weirdly common stock genre show plots:
Time loop
Body swap
Some members of the team get shrunk (and have to go inside someone's body)
All the male members of the team are turned into simpering idiots by pheromones and have to be saved by the female member(s) of the team and I guess this is feminist somehow
Time loop
Everyone on the team is trapped in their individual worst nightmares and the episode is called "Fear Itself"
Someone goes all "Heart of Darkness" on an alien planet
Trapped in a VR simulation (but you can die for real!)
The team is brainwashed into serving in the workforce of some alien planet
Lotus-eater plot (everyone is trapped in an idyllic fantasy world)
Time loop
One or more members of the team "de-evolve" into cavemen
Someone on the team "evolves" to have super-intelligence (and this is bad)
Time loop
real nuance perverts when it depends
