Putting limitations on the 2nd Amendment will likely NOT lead to a compete and total break-down of the amendment. There are limits on the 1st Amendment, and I think everyone can agree that CHILD PORN should be illegal. So why are assault rifles still legal? Why are guns so easy to purchase? The "slippery slope" argument just doesn't hold up.
"Statistically? What? That's a thing?" Yes. How do people not know this. The fact that he was so flabbergasted is both funny and frustrating. (Also, I just got to alliterate AND use the word 'flabbergasted,' how rad is that?! Is flabbergasted an onomatopoeia?? I'll bet it is. No, I'm not a 10th-grader, just a nerd who gets excited easily.)
‘Systemic Conservative ignorance’ and Republican loyalty to Big Oil donors is an act of environmental terrorism.
Our government has a duty to protect their citizens. Republicans have used their politicians to threaten the world with inaction and parrot propaganda.
Vote for Democrats. Vote to confront the climate crisis. Vote to take responsibility. Vote for the future so our children can inherit a livable world.
A line of beautiful, plus size fashion dolls. We believe #ACES: Amazing comes in every size!
y’all… this project needs our help.
the creators are a curvy white woman and a curvy black woman who want to create a line of plus size dolls in order to promote body positivity and acceptance among young girls.
in case you didn’t know, according to this study done in 2015, at least 80% of 8 to 10 year old girls in the united states are either on a diet, or they have their daily food intake restricted. the reason that’s still relevant, despite the substantial gap of 4 years between the publishing of the study and this kickstarter, is that in the 1970s, the encouraged dieting age for girls was 14, thus showing a clear downwards trend in the age young girls are made and encouraged to diet.
this is extremely harmful for their self esteem, as well as their growing and changing bodies, and can lead to eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia in addition to malnourishment and serious health concerns (e.g. vitamin deficiencies), and unfortunately, the extreme weight loss mentality cultivated by parents and/or guardians can last long into adulthood.
now that you know why we need representation for fat women, it’s time to talk about why this specific small business deserves support. the answer is simple enough: they are respectful to the fat characters they’ve created, and allow all of them to posess a sense of dignity.
clearly three dimensional characters, each of the dolls has their own personality and style:
aliyah (1st) - the sweet owner of an animal sanctuary and a veterinarian for exotic animals
quinn (2nd) - a strong vintage car mechanic
keiko (3rd) - became an incredibly smart animal robitics engineer because she’s allergic to animal fur
alexandra (4th) - extremely tough, no-nonsense civil rights law student and activist
if the project reaches its funding goal, these dolls could show up on the shelves of your local target and walmart.
sounds amazing, right? well, don’t get your hopes up too soon, because the project has met less than 0.08% of its goal with less than a month to completion.
you read that right–’all or nothing’ means that if they don’t make at least $230,655 (USD) before July 7, 2019, the kickstarter will be abandoned.
personally, I’m hoping the creators plan to launch another kickstarter if this one fails, but hopefully it won’t come to that. maybe, if we spread this around enough, posting updates on the progress it makes, we might just be able to help them.
I’m not demanding you donate $200 because “you can’t call yourself a good feminist without including fat people in your activism,” I’m asking you to reblog this for your friends, followers, and family members who know what it’s like to be ashamed of their size.
barbie and her multitude of professions did wonders for encouraging girls to pursue careers in STEM fields, imagine what this could do for girls.
so tag your friends, tag your mutuals, tag anyone you can think of to help support and signal boost this beautiful idea! I’ll start:
if y'all see that your local libraries and museums are doing pride displays and events, PLEASE INTERACT WITH THE MATERIALS AND/OR ATTEND THEM! even if its just a pretty arrangement of lgbt books, borrow the materials amd make comments about how much you like them.
libraries in particular take a lot of heat for showcasing lgbt stuff, but having supporting statistics in hand to defend ourselves helps to keep the directors from backing down when confronted by conservative blowhards. but we only get those statistics if you’re actually there supporting us. my system dropped our Storytime with a Drag Queen events because of this.
please boost this, and as always, support your local queer librarians!
We recently had a display of local queer events for teens get challenged (and it went mildly viral on Facebook because the guy posted a photo of it there) and I just wanted to share the emails that the director printed off for the drama of it all
The tiny stack is people complaining.
The giant stack is people supporting us and telling us their stories and affirming how important it is to have queer representation in libaries.
In Ohio, a library canceled a Drag 101 class they were hosting, due to threats that included a nasty letter from the State Speaker of the House.
Now, it wasn’t my library. Wasn’t even my system. And we were always planning on doing a Pride display. But in the face of such asshattery, we turned it up to eleven. Every section has a rainbow display, even though we have zero space in our branch. And nobody has complained once. (I’d know if they had, because the manager is out of town so I’m the boss and I get all the complaints.)
Yesterday a kid, much too young to read, pulled I Love My Two Dads off the display for her mom to read to her. And the mother didn’t balk. Didn’t even hesitate. They sat down and read the book right there.
Libraries are here, libraries are queer, and we’re not going anywhere.
“Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she’ll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In Frozen, Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In Frozen II, she must hope they are enough.”
