I just watched a documentary that made me so viscerally angry. About a girl who took her own life. The documentary was centered around her skating partner, HIS family, and HIS coaches....the movie went on and on to list all the negative things she went through, insinuating that in spite of the abusive environment that all of those interviewed allowed to continue, and their lack of support...that it was all her fault. Centering this man and how her death affected him, when he seemed to barely support her in life.
There was even an unrelated segment about how hard it was for him to have all the media attention when they went to the Olympics, while ignoring her. Like literally complaining about the media painting things a certain way, when he refused to acknowledge that their coach was abusive to her despite her claims. Like cry me a fucking river.
It just disgusts me how disposable women are when they're alive. How we ignore and minimize their problems. And when they die its all a performance, an outcry about how they could have done better...but also never accepting any blame. She had problems, she should have tried harder to get help...etc. There should be systems in place, but its not MY responsibility. She was just too difficult, she had a bad background, a hard life.
No one wants to accept they're the reason that it was hard to begin with.
