This was during my 35 day radiation treatment back in 2013. Breast cancer isn’t sexy. It’s not about saving the boobies. It’s not about no bra day, which is really just an excuse for women to post sexy pics of their nipples pressing through their clothes. It’s scars, nausea, pain, bald heads, burnt skin, and broken hearts.

If this doesn’t make you “aware” then I don’t know what will. 

Does it make you uncomfortable? It should.

When I was in high school, it was unheard of for a girl to stand up against sexist jokes or objectification for fear of being a “grumpy feminist”. Like girls in high school now, I too stayed silent and even played along with it when my peers were being disrespectful of women and girls. I pretended to like sexist and objectifying media so that guys would see me as one of the “cool girls”. For anyone to think of you as a feminist was basically the worst thing that could happen to you.

Fast forward just 7 years later. Feminism is actually trendy and it’s not quite as big of a deal to call yourself a feminist. There is a lot of conversation about women’s rights, reproductive justice, and gender equality. Yet one thing has remained the same: women and girls are still wary of speaking out against sexist media and socialization. Now, it’s not because they are worried of being called feminists, but it’s because the media/porn/advertisements/corporations have co-opted feminism to such a degree that they have repackaged patriarchal socialization as an “empowered choice” that women make, and they have demonized those who speak out against it by accusing them of “shaming other women”. Instead of “grumpy feminists” we now have SWERFS, whoreophobia, kink-shaming, slut-sharming etc.

All of this “change” and increased acceptance of feminism has not changed the fact that girls are still wary of standing up for their own humanity, and that’s just how many of these “feminist” publications want it.

also ime a lot of young women nowadays will shy away from calling themselves feminists because the “third wave” has so completely convinced them that feminism requires being constantly up for being used by men for sex and a-okay with pornography and feeling ~empowered~ by wearing shoes they can barely walk in and half a makeup counter. feeling like maybe you’re actually a person and deserve better is no longer “feminist”.

That reminds me of something Gail Dines said in one of her talks, about why many of her young female students didn’t call themselves feminists.

“You know what my students said to me last semester and I almost fell off my chair? I said why don’t you call yourselves feminists, and they said, and I swear I am not making this up, they said “Well, doesn’t feminism mean you have to fuck every guy and I don’t feel comfortable with that.” Isn’t that profound? Isn’t that profound? Do you understand what a shift that is? And you know what because in the air is third wave feminism.“

I’ve noticed a similar thing on tumblr. I used to get reblogged and followed from time to time by anti-feminist women, so I’d look at their blog to figure out why they liked my posts, and they had written things like “I’m against feminism because it encourages women to do porn and have sex with tons of men.” These women were anti-feminist in other ways too, of course, but it’s really telling that they look at what mainstream feminism has to offer and see it for the pile of dicksucking garbage that it is, while many pro-porn, pro-sexual violence women who identify as feminists lecture others about internalised misogyny without a hint of irony.

the high school i work for had a “feminist day” where all the dudes wore “this is what a feminist looks like” t-shirts and i would not want to be associated with that either, if i was a young woman, these are the same dudes who treat their girlfriends like garbage and make sexist jokes all day and make fun of the girls for things like eating food and yet they are convinced they’re feminists bc they “support equality”
