The 10 MUST READ arhurian novels (all in my opinion!)
1. Idylls of the Queen (Phyllis Ann Karr)
This novel is a mistery/fantasy novel which should be read before reading Malory’s “Morte d’Arthur” to keep the mistery intact. The story is about a poison apple which kills an innocent knight during a banquet organized by the queen. Guinevere is accused of murder and while everyone waits for Lancelot to save her, Mordred and Kay leave to go to speak to the magical lady of the lake and find out who poisoned the apple and who was the real target of the murder.
This is without a doubt my favourite arthurian novel because it has wonderful characters, mystery and adventures. It is on “number one” because it is so much more than an arthurian novel.
2. Merlin’s trilogy (Mary Stewart)
This is a trilogy about Merlin’s life from his birth to the reign of Arthur. It is an historical story and Merlin describes the lives of Uther, Arthur, Guinevere and Camelot. Also if I am not a fan of Merlin, I liked this books anyway and I decided to give them “number two” because they describe all the story of Arthur in a very entertaining way and so they are “complete”. There is also the extra two books: “The prince and the pilgrim” and “The wicked day”. The second one is particularly beautiful and it’s about Arthur’s death and Mordred’s life.
3. The Mists of Avalon (Marion Zimmer Bradley)
I have to say that I don’t like this book but it’s an arthurian “classic” and it is interesting enough, also so many people like it so I decided to put it in this list. This story is also a “complete” story because it is about Morgan’s life and her descriptions of Uther’s kingdom, Arthur’s life and his death.
4. Guinevere’s trilogy (Persia Woolley)
After Merin’s version and Morgan’s version I think a good book should be Guinevere’s version. There are a lot of books about Guinevere but I think this trilogy is one of the best written. The first book is about Guinevere’s childhood and it presents a lot of arthurian characters. The books are “complete” and the end is with Arthur’s death. Do not let the covers of these books scare you! They are not harmony, they are historical retellings of Malory. I would like to add that for the first time I could finally read in a novel a good realistic retelling of my favourite episodes of Malory’s novel: Balin and Balan, Nimue and Merlin, Mordred’s betrayal, Galahad’s quest and Palamede’s love for Iseult.
5. The Pendragon (Catherine Christian)
This is not a very well known book and it’s a pity. Bedivere is the narrator and it’s a “complete” story that describes Arthur’s kingdom and it ends with Camlann. It is also an historical novel and I particularly loved the character of Palamede who is not often a main characters in arthurian novel.
6. Sword at sunset (Rosemary Sutcliff)
This is another famous historical “complete” arthurian novel. I have to admit that the number 5, 6, 7 and 8 are quite in random order because I think they equally deserve together the 5th place as wonderful written and complete historical Arthurs.
7. The Once and Future King (T. H. White)
This is another classic “complete” arthurian novel. It starts with Arthur (Wart) as a child and it ends with his death. I don’t think I need to explain why I put it in this list, I’ll just say that It is not “number one” because I think some people find boring the first part of the book (the “Disney-movie” part).
8. Firelord (Parke Godwin)
This is an original and refreshing retelling of Arthur’s life. It has irony, love and action. The Morgan/Arthur’s aspects may interest some readers but Guinevere is a wonderful character too. It is historical in a way that Bernard Cornwell and Whyte are not because this book has nothing of the “magical” Camelot and Arthur or his magnificence.
9. Squire’s Tales (Gerald Morris)
This is a series of 10 books. They are all comedies and they usually are parody of some aspects of the legends. I thinks they are all a must-read because if you know these episodes they are really funny. They are abut Terence, Gawain’s squire, and Gawain but a lot of them have as main characters other arthurian people: Dinadan, Perceval, Ywain, Lynette, Gaheris and Gareth, Morgan le fay, the Fair Unknown etc.
I particularly enjoyed “The savage damsel and the dwarf” (about Lynette and Gareth) and “The Ballad of sir Dinadan” (about Dinadan and Tristan).
10. Road to Avalon (Joan Wolf)
This is mostly a love story. I know that there are a lot of people who like Morgan/Arthur and this book is about them. It’s about their childhood and their difficult love after finding out their blood relations. It’s also about Arthur’s kingdom and Guinevere.
Surprisingly, I loved this book and it is a new way of seeing the arthurian story. It’s also a “complete” story because it starts with a young Arthur and it ends with Camlann.
