i also think. something so compelling about biosphere is the looming specter of regret. what if we did things differently. what if we could go back and change things. but we can't all we can do is not let the past stop us in the here and now. maybe if you and your bestie had had gay sex earlier he wouldn't have caused an apocalypse. but we can't change that. have gay sex now. better late than never
i’ve stumbled upon something incredible
Biosphere (2022) Headcanons
@musingsofburnttoast’s hcs give me life so I’m posting some of my own <3
-Ray was on the track and field team in high school/college, and he used to run marathons. Billy was not on any sports teams.
-both Ray and Billy were bachelors before everything went to hell in a hand basket which is why they don’t have any family with them in the dome
-Billy struggled to form emotional connections with women, and women didn’t put up with Billy’s childish frat boy demeanour for very long, unless they wanted to get something out of him
-Billy’s bachelor status was not popular with the Republican party, but he wasn’t formally elected anyways. Inspired by @musingsofburnttoast’s headcanon that Billy was VP, I like to imagine that he was Speaker of the House, then the VP retired, and then the President died so that’s how he achieved his position as president. A comedy of errors.
-Ray always claimed his work got in the way of romance, and that’s why he never settled down and had kids. Funnily enough, his work always entailed following Billy and supporting his career wherever he went, which Ray’s girlfriends picked up on. He did not appreciate it when they pointed it out, and more than one break up resulted because of it
-Billy never considered having kids before the dome because he still felt like a kid himself, but he was always good with other people’s kids. He was the fun uncle
-Billy once got really, really drunk in college and made out with another guy. Nobody saw, and he knows deep down that he liked it more than he ‘should’ have, but he’s suppressed the memory so thoroughly he almost doesn’t believe it happened. Almost. Regardless, he never allowed himself to get that drunk at a party again.
-Ray developed feelings for Billy a long time ago, but he always told himself it was just platonic. Any time he thought deeper about it elicited vicious self-loathing. Billy, of course, was oblivious. It wasn’t until they started trying to get pregnant and Billy clearly reciprocated these feelings that Ray finally let himself accept them.
-Ray figures out a food situation that tides them over for awhile so that Billy can give birth and the baby (a girl) can acclimate to being alive before they have to leave the dome, also giving the atmosphere time to come back in the mean time. The sky is back to being mostly blue by the time they leave.
-the baby sleeps in a laundry basket and they had to repurpose some old clothes to make cloth diapers and clothes for her. It is janky as hell
-Billy actually likes being pregnant until the third trimester, and then he feels miserable. Once he’s full term Ray suggests having sex to induce labor. Billy thinks it’s a joke until Ray starts talking about prostaglandins and oxytocin and then Billy straddles and kisses him to shut him up because “why the HELL didn’t you say so sooner”
-their daughter takes after Ray in smarts and looks, but she takes after Billy in personality. Ray likes to grumble about there being two of them now but deep down both he and Billy love the traits they see of the other in their daughter
-all we really know is that there was some disruption to the atmosphere, so i’m taking liberties and assuming it’s not completely gone so that buildings and stuff can’t collapse (because apparently concrete depends on oxygen). I like to imagine them finding a house with functional solar panels and a rain collection system to raise their daughter in. They start a garden and teach her how to read and write. They find some bicycles for longer distance travel to collect supplies as needed.
-Ray is ecstatic to finally have someone to explain his scientific work to who looks at him with curiosity rather than with a blank stare (Billy really tries, and he admires Ray’s intelligence, but it all goes in one ear and out the other)
-Ray and Billy discuss having another baby so that their daughter isn’t alone once they die, but Ray is terrified of risking Billy’s life again and Billy isn’t really enthused about going through unmedicated childbirth again in his late forties. They eventually get in contact with other survivors via ham radio, and they are so relieved that their daughter isn’t going to be the last human on earth
-Billy encourages Ray and their daughter to meet them, but is reluctant to meet other survivors himself in case they recognize him as the person who helped kill the planet. He doesn’t think that would go over very well (even though, it’s likely anyone else who was powerful and rich enough to build a bunker probably also wasn’t a great person)
-Ray teaches Billy how to care for their daughter’s natural hair. They tag team so that braiding goes faster, and it becomes really cherished bonding time for all three of them
-Billy has trouble orgasming for a while after giving birth (having a baby fucks with your body and mind), and they have stopped having penetrative sex to avoid another pregnancy (since age-related infertility doesn’t affect Billy on behalf of developing eggs in his mid forties), but once they leave the dome Ray finds a functional rechargeable vibrator and contraceptives at an abandoned pharmacy and it’s the second best day of Billy’s life (after the birth of their daughter, of course). Again taking liberties here with expiry dates but idc
