Elena glanced at him and smiled brightly. “My brother always gets sick at the most inconvenient times.” She smiled again and gave a small shrug of her shoulders. “I mean, free coffee is my middle name–well, actually it’s Marie, but you got that, right, okay.” Elena brushed her hair behind her ear. “But, in more normal and not completely spastic terms, that sounds good. Just let me know when you’re free.” She smiled and rocked back on her heels, nodding her head towards the checkout counter. “I should probably go before Jeremy convinces himself he’s contracted the plague. I’ll see you around. Coffee’s on you next time.” She paused and grinned before walking towards the back. “By the way, I do expect you to pay for the coffee. I doubt you’ll be able to stuff it in your pocket without burning yourself.”
Most people lacked charm. But, he couldn’t necessarily rule her into that category. Talking to her seemed easy and he genuinely appreciated that she didn’t look at him like every other person he knew in town. He could admit he was low on friends and having even one, might help alleviate the defeaning silence that seemed to surround him on a daily basis. “You got it.” He gave a nod and could hardly suppress the laugh that escaped him. She was right about another thing. Coffee? Definitely not something he could steal. Besides, she earned it. If not by her brief company, than by the small token of wisdom she shared. Deal was a deal. “I’ll be sure to text you. Or, if you make another trip out here, do the same.” With that he smiled, and allowed her to walk off and pay for the medicine before he made his break for it.
Faye took immediate notice to Jake’s features inflaming with interior anger. Like it was within every inch of his body, which had now imposed on her personal space. She wasn’t afraid, nor a slight bit intimidated by his threatening demeanor. Her face set in a fixed expression of poise. Faye kept her chin up as she looked him straight in the eyes. Jake might’ve mastered an ability to conceal any sign of melodramatic emotions, but tears weren’t the only way to display uneasy troubles. Anger was just another side of the same coin, and she saw it — Jake’s grip of unsteady rage, flaming out from the center iris of his eyes. Had he responded with apathy, she would’ve been left stumped. To her convenience, Jake made it clear just how close this had all hit home for him. He clearly knew of a bigger picture that she and the other circle members had yet to find. Which of course, came as no surprise to Faye. She hadn’t pinpointed exact details just yet, but her gut instincts proved to be accurate. The witch was right to suspect that all of this business between Jake and the other circle members extended much deeper than textbook knowledge and useful spells. When he finished, she smiled smugly. Just a small little token gesture that relayed she could see right through his macho threats. That wouldn’t work on her anymore. Their past was the past. As far as Faye was concerned, their present had taken it’s rightful place in cold blood. Flourishing mirth spread across the witch’s face, while she remained put within the tight space Jake initially contracted between them.
“Wow. B r a v o, Armstrong.” She encouraged his performance, all while maintaining steady eye-contact. “It looks like you know a lot more than you let on.” Faye briefly paused, allowing that to sink in. She and the others may not have known what they had gotten themselves into, but this was all according to Jake. Who was obviously withholding such vital information from them. “And for some reason … you’ve been keeping it all to yourself.” With that, Faye took a playful step back.
Her response, clearly different from the old her, but yet still all the same, quickly reminded him of why he left her and everyone else behind in the first place. Usually he mastered indifference. He knew how to maintain it, so he could appear emotionless. But all of that composure when right out the window the second anyone mentioned his family. Whether dead or alive, matters of family were sacred. She wouldn’t know that because she didn’t really know him. As much as she claimed to have him all figured out, there were things about him she would never understand. Things she couldn’t even begin to fathom. “Nice try,” Jake laughed, rather harshly. He knew what she was doing. Trying to analyze him and show off. She took pride in thinking she knew him better than others. Typical Faye. He refused to let her get the best of him. He had a feeling that’s what she wanted. She wanted the upperhand but he wouldn’t allow it.
“I hate to burst your bubble, but you’re reaching. And it’s pathetic.” Both of them knew, she wasn’t wrong to assume he had more knowledge about magic and the circle than he let on. By now, Cassie would have told them all what he told her. Of course, Jake was careful enough not to let anything slip that he wouldn’t want the circle to find out. And judging by the way Faye confronted him now, he couldn’t help thinking she might have been a little jealous. Perhaps, that Cassie learned something about him before she ever did. They weren’t close anymore. She had no right to any of his secrets. And so, Jake decided he wouldn’t tell her anything. She could conclude whatever the hell she wanted. Reacting, only fed her persistance. “Have fun making a bunch of rookie mistakes. Maybe learn how to cover your tracks though, while you’re at it. Or don’t. I don’t really care.”

Elena paused and shifted the cold medicine back into her hand. She tried to imagine a scenario where she could leave Jeremy, and all of them were just impossible to her. Jeremy was the most important person in her life and it had always been that way and it always would be. But that was her and Jeremy. Elena really had no idea what happened with Jake and his brother and it wasn’t her place to judge him. God knows she’d made enough mistakes to last a lifetime. “Well, personally, I think that when it comes down to it family’s all that matters. Whoever your family is.” She bit the inside of her cheeks and shrugged her shoulders, “And part of that is forgiving them when they mess up. Maybe your brother will realize that.” Smiling, Elena nudged his shoulder softly, “And for the record, I don’t loathe you.”
Well, she was right about one thing. Family did matter. Jake knew that. Even if it seemed like he had forgotten. Nick had no idea just how much Jake thought of him. Hell, how much he missed him. He wasn’t really a bare-all-feelings type of guy but deep down he loved his brother. Nick was the only thing Jake had left. “Yeah, I suppose they do.” In an effort to change the subject, Jake gave a shrug and then half smiled at Elena’s claim of not hating him. She may have been the only one. A rarity entirely. “Too bad you’ve gotta get home a sick younger brother. Or else I would have offered to treat you to coffee. Maybe, I’ll take a rein check?”

Chris nodded, having no more to say and watched the boy walk away for a second before turning around. Now to try and find Allison without having to ask every kid in town if they saw her.
With a sigh, Chris left the kitchen to go to his study. Allison wasn’t too happy about the whole lunch thing that happened earlier that day, and Chris understood, not that he would have decided on a different action. Turning the light on, and it was all those years of training that didn’t let him show his surprise. “Jake.” He said in acknowledgement. “What was it you needed to tell me?” The hunter said as he walked to his desk, leaning against it as he faced the boy.
Two years ago, Jake found it next to impossible to read Chris’ mood. But overtime, observing him got a little easier. There were two things Chris cared about most: family, and preserving the lives of innocent human beings. His intentions seemed honorable, but Jake doubted them at times. “I wanted to talk about what happened at Fright Night. And tell you that you’re a liar. Why did your hunters round up Nick with the rest of the circle?” Jake was angry. He could admit that. He might have been deceiving the rest of them but Nick was his family. He didn’t come back to this town to kill him. Even if he was a witch. Blood was far thicker than anything else. “You promised me, you wouldn’t let them touch him. This wasn’t the agreement I signed up for! I said I would do whatever you asked, help you hunt and track down whoever. But Nick is off limits.”
Jake & Cassie
@cassieblcke
While Jake wasn’t sure of a lot of things, he was sure of Cassie’s connection to dark magic. After burning a few of his hunter friends ( if you could even call them that ) alive, it became abundantly clear that he needed to keep a closer eye on her. There was no telling what she was capable of. So long as her emotions were kept in check, she wouldn’t pose that much of a danger to herself or others.
Being around her was easier than being around the rest of the circle. Nick, Adam, and Faye were all convinced he was hiding something. And though, they were right to assume that -- Jake had to continue pretending otherwise. Cassie, felt the most inclined it seemed, to give him the benefit of the doubt. Which he could greatly appreciate. And hopefully warp to his advantage when the time came.
“I’d suggest taking a break,” Jake advised with a smile, as he pulled up a chair next to Cassie along the pier. No doubt was he intruding on what looked like -- an early morning breakfast. Needless to say, he sincerely hoped she didn’t mind. “What’chu you reading?” He gave a gentle nod to the book lying open infront of her. It was covered in symbols and text, all of which he assumed were related to witchcraft.

Nick wanted things to be normal between him and Jake. It was his brother after all, he couldn’t stay mad at him forever but it was not going to be easy for him swallow his pride and forgive him. “Rough decade.” His voice came out lower than intended. It had been a long time since they had a casual conversation. Jake had been gone too long and Nick had grown thick skin around his whole being just so no one could get to him. Now, the brothers were like two strangers.
He knew what Nick said was an understatement. Jake was usually so wrapped up in himself and his own losses that he didn’t stop to think about Nick. Or the fact that Nick didn’t just lose their parents, but he lost Jake too. Or rather, Jake left him. It had to have stung. To realize that he had no one. -- But it wasn’t like Jake personally aimed to abandon Nick. That wasn’t what it was about. Even the whole time he was gone, he thought about him. Wondered how he was getting by. If he was staying out of trouble. If he met a girl. If he was passing in school. Jake cared about these things. Despite, not always voicing the questions aloud. “Are we really doing this?” Jake could have went on with the conversation. But, he had to clear the air someday. Better for him to do it now and get it over with than continue prancing around on eggshells. “The one or two word answers? You don’t think I know when you’re mad at me? It’s okay, you can say it.”

“J A K E ! ”
Nick stormed into Jake’s room, waving his hand through the air to disperse the smoke. The flames were making their way up the curtains whilst melting the paint on the walls. The room was in darkness; the smell was of thick black smoke. “Jake! We gotta get out!” He ran to his bed; he was not there. “Fuck.”
“Caroline? Aunt Liz?” He ran downstairs. His heart pounding hard against his chest like it was trying to knock a hole through the wall of his rib cage. The smoke was much thicker in the living room.
“Nick.”
He heard Caroline calling his name. Her voice seemed far away in the thick air. “Caroline, where are you?” He called between coughs. No answer.
“Caroline!”
Nothing but the sound of the crackling fire.

There were just some things people weren’t actually supposed to say. Jake’s mocking accusations could not have been any further away from what most girls would expect of a guy. Even a fuck-up like Jake. Guys weren’t supposed to be aware of small things like the fact that she purposely wore her low cut tops more often than usual. Yes, she craved attention, but not in the desperate, needy way. Which, Faye was sure, Jake saw it as. To Faye, it was about taking the victory from their past. Two years ago, he left her a complete, and utter mess. And now? She had taken life’s lessons and wore them like battle scars. However, that didn’t mean she was ready to call it a day and simply move on. No. Faye Chamberlain refused to settle as the loser, of their break-up. After everything she’d been through, it was Jake’s turn to get the shit end of the stick. She was sure as hell going to live day to day leaving her house looking like a million bucks, because that’s who she was. She wasn’t some plain jane bambi. She was worth being noticed. It wasn’t about getting the attention of Jake’s oogling eyes. It was about making him recognize all he was missing, and thus, regretting that he ever took her for granted.
Her facial expression had halted, taken aback; to the point she couldn’t uphold her boisterous mask. He wasn’t supposed to call her out, and frankly, she couldn’t understand why it was all that surprising that he had no qualms for speaking to her like this. All aside, the most bothersome of it all, was hearing Jake even suggest that she premeditated their run-ins. Even if it wasn’t true, Faye despised that it was even allowed to be a possibility at all. (Something she was capable of) No one was allowed to see her in that kind of light, and here was someone who had witnessed it. Ugh. Normally, she would deflect the situation with a joke, or something, but this was different. Jake made her feel exposed. It frustrated her, no doubt, but she could surely take his challenges on. Jake wasn’t a man, he was still a boy. Contrary to the past, Faye responded to his asshole behavior with attitude. Former Faye would have played dumb; oblivious and delusional. But now? She had attitude. “Hm.” Her right brow soothed into a look of her own amusement. “— funny, how you’re the only one sitting around concocting all these tales…” She accused with mockery.
The prideful part of her wanted to make a fuss over Jake’s subtle threat against getting on his bad side. She wanted to confront it, but he’d entered a new territory of discussion: the circle. The baggage between them, was something entirely different from circle politics. In fact, she was more comfortable staying on this topic, as it was less personal. “The rest of my circle? You mean, the one your ancestors started up?” By that, she referred to the Armstrong family being one of the original six, thus linking Jake by default. She mimicked with emphasis on his hint in having no affiliation. “Jake, it’s not a book club; stating the obvious isn’t helping anyone.” Faye gave a grimacing look. She was well aware that Jake possessed a decent amount of knowledge of their world. They hardly had the chance to discuss magic between the two of them, but she gathered that tip from the other circle members. Cassie, specifically. “But, you’ve never really been the giving-type.” She backed up a step. Of course he wasn’t helping anyone, Jake only knew how to take. Faye knew from the get go, Jake was here because he needed something. She wasn’t sure what, but her suspicions were certain to remain unwavering.
The comment regarding his ancestors made him harden. He hated witchcraft. And their circle. He hated what being tied to them had taken from him, and what it would continue to take from him. He was sick of everyone questioning him. They had no right. His bloodline might have been linked to the rest of them, but Jake wasn’t a part of their circle. And he never would be. He could strangle Nick for the part he played in the binding ritual. But, deep down a part of him, blamed himself for not being there to stop it. None of them knew that in linking themselves together, they drew huge targets on their backs. He was supposed to help destroy them. To avenge the tragic death of his parents, and the loss of his innocence. He’s been a hollow shell of a man for a really long time. Being with Chris, and the other hunters helped to restore the bits of himself that he’s been searching for endlessly.
Faye, and the rest of them, didn’t know what they were talking about. It was funny how they thought they had everything figured out. That together they’d be stronger. When in reality, they were weak. A bunch of lost sheep. They were just a bunch of kids who kept playing with fire, not knowing that one day they were all going to burn. “Let’s get one thing straight,” Jake responded, between clenched teeth. He closed the gap between himself and Faye. The anger boiling inside of him, and the desperation he felt to get his point across, became the only reason that he allowed himself to stand within reaching distance of her. “I don’t care who my ancestors were or what their affiliation was with the rest of your circle. I may be linked to you thanks to my idiot brother, but I’ll never be like the rest of you. You don’t know what you’ve gotten yourselves into.” He stopped himself before he could go on any further. She could accuse him of things all she wanted. He didn’t care what she thought of him. In fact, hating him and choosing to stay away from him, would be the smartest decision she could make. Of course, Jake didn’t count on that. He knew Faye. And he knew she wouldn’t give up.
