Genuinely it's like

It's been a year. I think it's been more than obvious that in that time I've moved on to other interests. I'm not ashamed of that or anything, I don't think it's good to only have one thing you like in your whole life.

But even just this. This unpolished animatic releasing during a time when hope for a continuation is at it's bleakest, has me remembering why I've spent so long loving it.

It really doesn't matter how long it's been, this show will always be mine.

I feel like a struggle with how to pitch rwby to people with out giving away everything. So much of what I like about the show is baked into v3 and the direction it takes after it. Plus the way that the characters are slowly built up and torn apart in different ways over the whole show. But I never feel like I can talk about that. Like the parts of v1-2 that I enjoy (not counting the fights and soundtrack) the most are the allusion that something much bigger and more dangerous is going on, and the little bits of the chacters that are slowly built up. I feel like if you mention that to show one it kinda gives the game away you know? I know no idea about v3 or any of the crazy salem shit and I feel like if you tell people hey there’s more going on that’s like a big flashing sign saying tonal shift.

Maybe that’s not true cause you could tell something was coming way back in v1. But idk. I just love how my first time through I happened to somehow completely fall in love with cast by v3 over those first few volumes completely unexpectedly. I don’t want to take that experience away by telling them why. Rwby really is about trauma, healing, the problems with the world that the last generation left you, and trying to do you best in the face of what seems like an insurmountable threat because that’s worth something damit. Even if you fail.

But if you tell someone that they can makes some pretty good educated guesses on how much everyone is going to be hurt, that the show isn’t really about combat school, that the show will slowly beat its protagonist to her breaking point. Slowly uncovering that is such an intrinsic part of rwby to me I can’t risk given that away at all

what she means: jaune labeled all the paper pleasers with the names of his friends and then abused them for years, ignoring everything they told him about what they wanted because he decided they needed to be protected from themselves because they were too stupid and crazy to really mean what they said. (<- ruby knows exactly how that feels.) the paper pleasers were not his friends, he didn’t care about them—they were props to make him feel better. they were real people whom jaune treated like toys to play pretend about saving his real friends. the make-believe hero. and ruby’s supposed to feel sorry for him now? because his little toys finally broke free?

what wby+j probably hear: ruby thinks it’s stupid to care about the paper pleasers because afterans aren’t real people.

what salem says: none of that matters anymore! why spend our lives trying to redeem these humans when we could replace them with what they could never be?

what she means: the brothers never had the right to massacre humankind, and now that they have abandoned remnant, abdicated their responsibility as its creators, and sworn not to return until they’re summoned, nothing they say matters at all. these humans did nothing wrong and the gods gave them nothing and deserve nothing in return; trying to ‘redeem’ these humans is a waste of time because there is nothing to redeem. the only person alive who needs redemption before the gods is salem herself, and she doesn’t want it—because to redeem herself is to justify what the brothers did, to say that the slaughter of the whole planet and the millions of years she spent in solitude were good and just and fair, and she knows that isn’t true. the gods want humans to grovel for forgiveness? the gods can burn.

what ozma probably hears: salem wants to kill everybody because she doesn’t think these humans are real people.

i will add any additional rwby content released during the wind down period as it becomes available. V1-8 have an english subtitle track embedded in the files, V9 does not because it came from CR. IQ dub has english subtitles. and for the sake of completeness i pulled all the non-english subs available on CR for V1-9 as well, those are in there as loose .ass files for the time being.

whenever possible, buy physical media. learn how to strip drm out of digital content that you own and make it a habit to do so.
