Last week, Sam Smith put out an incredible video for Leave Your Lover.  For those who are not familiar, Sam Smith is an undeniably talented British singer-songwriter who first drew heat through features on Disclosure's Latch and Naughty Boy's La La La.  UK fans got access to his debut studio album, In The Lonely Hour, yesterday, but stateside - the album is due out in the US on June 17 - we can get a taste with this song, Life Support.  No one else can make falsetto sound so smooth, nor loneliness so sweet.

Honestly.  As if the YOLO epidemic wasn't bad enough...now we have That Hoe Over There.  Oh, you thought Drake was singing about someone being considerate?

Produced by DJ Mustard and previously a Tinashe single, this is basically a Drake song ft. OB OBrien, and the former dwarfs him. To get a true taste of OBrien's potential, check out Hazelton Trump.  To do otherwise is like going off Watch The Throne before Blueprint.  either way, the day, today, belongs to Drake.

ZZ Ward - 365 Days (Jerry Folk Remix)

Growing up, I thought I had an unusual name. I can't imagine how Zsuzsanna Eva Ward felt.  Known now as the artist, ZZ Ward, Zsuzsanna is known best for her hit 2012 single "Put the Gun Down". Although I'm not a huge fan of that song, I do love her silky sultry voice that seems to go well no matter what it's paired with.

Jerry Folk, an 18 yo DJ from Norway (what's up with all the DJ's from Norway right?) with a penchant for strong jazzy female vocalists, repurposes ZZ's vocals from 365 Days to create the perfect pick me up song. With a funky bass line and guitar riffs, soulful "screw you" lyrics, and an energetic melody, you should check your pulse if this track doesn't get your feet tapping.

Future - Move That Dope ft. Pusha T, Pharrell and Casino

Future has racked up quiet a resume. Some of past collaborations include projects with Rihanna, Snoop Dogg--excuse me, Snoop Lion-- and R. Kelly. He's also engaged to Ciara and her baby daddy. Who else can put that on a CV?  For this track he works with Pusha T, Pharrell and Casino. The four have very different styles but each kills it in their own right to a versatile production driven by snappy drums and windy melody. Still, I have to say I was most impressed with Pharrell's verse, where he abandons his falsetto and lays down a fast paced dime of a rhyme.

FKA Twigs - Papi Pacify

On a small scale, it’s why we drink, smoke, make love, pop pills, and otherwise indulge.  ”War is a force that gives us meaning,” so said a journalist familiar with conflict who won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for coverage of global terrorism - but there comes a point when you’re so exhausted you no longer care about even the truth - you just want to stop fighting, if only for a little bit.  The lie, the divorce from reality, pacifies you, and it feels good. FKA Twigs’s “Papi Pacify” blends the sensuality of Goapele and the dark dreaminess of Lana del Rey; her lyrics falls somewhere between that muted conflict and a fake-it-til-you-make-it hope.  Produced by Arca, who worked on Kanye West’s Yeezus, the song keeps you submerged, from the sparse, vocal-focused verses to the low growling bass driving the chorus.  Throughout it, Twigs asks for reassurance, even if it’s not true.  To be honest, she makes it sounds so good it doesn’t even matter. FYI, the video to this song is Mildly NSFW.  You might want to listen the first time with your eyes closed, or visual may overtake audio.  But definitely watch the video the second go-around.

Lorde's voice is straight out of a fairy tale.  Flume's music is INCEPTION-worthy. Put them together and you have some sort of strange magical dream, complete with random radio announcements, horse-neighs and the kind of "ohh!" you hear after any good yo' mama joke.  A modern aural wonderland.

Lykke Li - No Rest For The Wicked ft. A$AP Rocky

Lykke Li broke out with the infectious-pop Little Bit, which featured short, repeated lyrics, but in No Rest For The Wicked, she weaves an epic story of heartache and regret with production that sounds like a field-sweeping wind - unstoppable. This version, with A$AP Rocky guesting, isn't the one that will be on her new album - I Never Learn - dropping May 6; rather it's an exclusive release meant to promote Beats Music.  While creating original tracks for subscription services is innovative and could become the future model, it seems that just as you can't tame a wild heart, neither can you keep a good song on lock for long.

Kanye West - G.O.O.D Friday ft. Kid Cudi, Big Sean, Push T, and Charlie Wilson

Seems appropriate. Not only because of the day but because Kanye, Common, Kid Cudi, Big Sean and Pusha T deliver the standout performance from a standout series (GOOD Fridays)  in such a high fashion. The jazzy beat, Cudi's soulful crooning and bars from three of the top MC's in the game make sure that even after almost 4 years, this song STILL goes.

Benjamin Francis Leftwich - Shine (Kygo Remix)

Kygo is my #1 DJ right now. Hailing from Norway, his mixes are usually a cool 100 bpms (chill), uplifting, contain emotional vocal samples, and astral production. I can listen to his music all day, and I literally have for the past week.  This specific song is a remix of Benjamin Francis Leftwich's song, Shine. It's my favorite song from Kygo's recent guest mix on BBC's Diplo and Friends and it's finally available on Soundcloud! In this song, Benjamin wishes that a girl finds true love, and suggests that he might be that guy she finds it with. The touching lyrics and it's ethereal production make it a great example of Kygo's unique style.

$kinny - Talk 4 Me

The mixtape has always been an essential part of hip-hop culture, and indeed helped drive its dissemination when most of its music was only available live.  Now it has become a way for artists to introduce themselves - and with $kinny's freshly dropped Ghetto Disneyland, what an introduction. The dreaded, tatted-up rapper - who self-produced most of his mixtape as well - is not what you expect of someone born and raised in the ultra-conservative Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  In the pre-released "Talk 4 Me," $kinny upturns stereotypes in a ground down Busta Rhymes beat - the production is heavier, hazier, with chorused shouts in the background that signal the impending approach of a marching mob - his mob.  The video is a far cry from glossed up overseas appropriations of American hip-hop with Maybachs and flashy jewelry - it's grimy, close to the ground, and ...wait, is that Ice-T's son?  Not that he's lacking in bravado.  With lines like "my withdrawals need a pickup [truck], my d*ck up when I watch my wrist freeze like a stick-up," it won't be long before your girl's spitting his verses, too.

The Live Music Capital of the World  would not be the same without Bob Schneider, a folk and rock staple in Austin, TX

He's seen much success on the road with the Ugly Americans, The Scabs, and as an opening act for Dave Matthews Band, but I would argue his best shows have been in the intimate setting of the Saxon Pub on S. Lamar where the tickets are $10, the beers are cheap, and there's barely any lighting. It's a perfect setting to make you focus on what's really important, the music. 

I would say with some confidence that Bob will never be a famous national rock/pop star, but I can guarantee that he'll always make great comfort music, and that's good enough for me. If you like this song, I would also recommend "Mudhouse," another oldie but goodie from his discography where he flexes his rap chops.

Max Frost - White Lies

Everyone once in a while you hear of a teenie bopper musical phenom like Chloe Martini, WondaGurl, and BJ the Chicago Kid who start making waves around the age of 16. Well, Max Frost is even rarer than that.  Max Frost grew up in Austin, TX and grew up mingling with some successful local musicians such as Bob Schneider and Kydd starting at the age of 8. He was doing his own shows at 12 yo, and eventually dropped out of UT where he was studying English, and signed with Atlantic Records. 

His first EP "Low High Low" got lots of critical acclaim and reminded me a lot of the Gorillaz, which made a lot of sense after I did some research and found out he's been associated with them.

Alicia Keys - It's On Again

Big movies need big music. Skyfall had Adele, Despicable Me 2 had Pharrell, and Rihanna is recording an entire concept album for the upcoming animated feature Home. So it only makes sense that The Amazing Spider Man 2, coming out next month, has some big name artists on its soundtrack as well. Produced by Pharrell (that guy's everywhere) and Hans Zimmer, Alicia Keys's velvet vocals lend encouragement to anyone who's ever felt burdened by their failures.

Peter Parker may be a superhero to us, but even Spiderman is just a high school kid. Whether it's dealing with school bullies, nursing heartbreak, or hunting criminals, the lyrics remind us that every time we are knocked down, there's no option but to stand and say "it's on" one more time.

BebeRexha - I Can't Stop Drinking About You

It's only April, but you can't wait.  Long days, longer nights, every summer needs its single.  You know, the one you blast with the top down, sun setting behind you, ocean breeze beside, and city lights ahead.  When you've been drunk since 11am and after a nap and shower are ready for a night that lasts forever.  Because you're so high on life or... because you need the fun to help you forget?  How many smiles hide heartbreak? The track itself (produced by The Monsters and The Strangerz) is an EDM banger, epic, anthem perfect with that "go, go, GO" momentum and a killer drop.  But it's fever that drives this song, not ecstasy. Inside burns a voice with unstoppable sorrow (and incredible range). Bebe Rexha is no stranger to dark themes - she penned Eminem ft. Rihanna's radio hit, Monster.  But only good things to come, as she's been in the studio with The Chainsmokers and is working with David Guetta on his new album (and he on hers).  Want to see her?  Hit Lollapalooza in August.  Ah, festivals... that's SO summer.

I first heard of BJ The Chicago Kid on Kendrick's "Section 80" track "Kush and Corinthians". He's a great producer and singer. This song features Boi Josh on the vocals but you can hear the quality in BJ's Production. It's a fun catchy tune the showcases the talent that has allowed him to work with the likes of Kanye West, ScHoolboy Q and Big KRIT

Jamie XX - Sleep Sound

It's that place between wakefulness and sleep, when you know you're laying in your bed, or on your couch, or wherever, wrapped in sheets, but that's as much conscious thought as you get.  It's the place where your bashful brilliance emerges, but you can't remember each genius thought as it's superceded by the next.  If the trip to unconsciousness had a soundtrack, this would be it. Sandman Jamie XX is back with his first solo single since 2011, a taste of his new album, "Girl/Sleep Sound" dropping Cinco de Mayo of this year.  It's stripped down yet rich, drifting between bright and muted with big-room vocals, far-out echos, and a seductive female sample that sounds like Alicia Keys.  Wouldn't be surprising, seeing as he helped produce her Grammy-winning "Girl On Fire" album.  Either way, it's dreamy.
