and to the children in the notes saying we need this fucking baby talk to get around censorship online; there's been no credible evidence that any site other that YouTube (which will only demonetize your video, ftr) will actually censor or hide content that include words like rape, pedophile, gun, terrorist, etc. etc. and even if we take as a given they were (which, again, they are not), do not fucking comply in advance, you absolute fucking coward. and ESPECIALLY do not comply by altering your real life fucking vocabulary. don't let the technocrats dictate what words you say holy fucking shit dude!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think GameFAQs might have the same censorship problems as YouTube (I know they actually listed "cock" as a bannable word regardless of context, even saying "cock" as in "cocking a gun" in the context of Shadow the Hedgehog's opening gets bannable just because the word technically is the same as male genitals).

Although "The unseen is much scarier" and "having the imagination fill in the blanks elicits fear" can be an effective usage of generating fear in a horror film or novel, there are a few times where the unseen if anything DOESN'T have you scared at all DESPITE the writers intent due to their overlooking key details that made the scenario implausible. Like Chrissie Watkins' death, especially when just visually watching it on mute and thinking on how the shark "attacked" her before eating her. I guess to put it another way, the opposite of "the unseen is much scarier" is more "You don't scare me, that could be anyone's ass" to quote The Simpsons.

These writers are driving me nuts with all the Misty-ness thrown around lol I miss her. All I need now is to say her name ;)

What if Misty is like Voldemort in that her name shall not be spoken among the production staff. So they instead make all these strange “coincidences” happen instead. Spooky.

Not likely, since they made her a wrong answer during the Sun and Moon leadup while indicating it was a near-miss. Not to mention that radio show back in 2012.

Have to admit, Serena handled being licked slightly better than Misty. Sure, she screamed in fright, but it still beats being left paralyzed.

This has been bugging me a bit but I’ve decided to finally put it in writing. Eighteen episodes into Pokemon XY and I’m beginning to have this train of thought. Namely, does Serena seem like she was constructed as a foil to Misty?

Perhaps that’s a preposterous notion to make, especially since Misty has been gone for so long. Arguably she wouldn’t be on the radar or zeitgeist of the production team at all due to how irrelevant (perhaps that’s too strong of a word) or simply, non-bearing she has on the current storyline.

But I honestly don’t think I’d be making this comparison if it wasn’t for this one simple fact: both Serena and Misty are the only main girl characters to have officially written romantic feelings for Ash.

I actually started to notice that bit as well, which is part of the reason I had zero issue viewing them as friends DESPITE their respective shipping ties to Ash.

You know, as much as people say Misty was left to the side in Johto, we still got some really cool episodes that focussed on her such as Fortune Hunters, For Crying Out Loud, and Hook, Line, and Stinker that make Johto worth watching for Misty fans.

Fully agreed, and even episodes where she WASN'T the focus, she still played a key role in helping save the day/resolving the conflict.

…I just realized that kid in the Pokemon Center said he owned a Gyarados. Dude looks like he’s eight but he somehow has a Gyarados. Whatever, the plot must go on.

Do you feel that Misty is treated poorly by the writers? She hasn't had a cameo in 7 years, and she has now not appeared for two series in a row. They also constantly bring Brock back over her, either as a main character or for a special. Between that and May and Dawn getting better screentime than her, it makes me feel like the writers never cared for Misty much. Why is it that aside from flashbacks/endings they haven't put her in an episode since 2005? That was like 7 years ago.

Oh? What’s not to love? She’s had four specials. Been in four main series episodes. She’s had various mentions throughout the anime. And she’s been in flashbacks. I don’t think there’s any malice on their part.

I think Anonymous is CyberCubed, he just LOVES to put down Misty and belittle her.

Food for thought. I think it’s kind of fascinating how almost all the girls that fell in love with Ash are the ones he helped during times of distress: Latias, Angie, Macy, Serena. I think the only girls that don’t fit into this pattern are Anabel and Misty.

What’s fascinating about Misty is that… I don’t ever recall her being saved by Ash like the other girls who crush on him. In fact, Misty has been the one to buck the trend in the opposite direction by saving him. She once saved him by fishing him out of the river when he was being chased by Spearow and also saved him during the Shamouti incident.

Ash actually saved her more than a few times, though that being said, Misty if anything was the one who saved HIM first, and also saved him about as many times as he did her.

Imagine Harley trying to enter a Pokemon performer contest and throwing a tantrum when he finds out he can’t, so he ruins the entire competition.

Personally, I find it GOOD he can't perform. He already wrecked the idea that Contests were gender equal with his mannerisms, anyway.

Sad thing is, this was the first instance of her participating in a Contest, and while skipping the Gym class as well upon hearing of it.

Benedicion, aka, MistyShrine, and more specifically her old account MistyFan101, showed this off on her old Twitter account (with the only difference being that the subtitles described a written exam, not a pop quiz), and boy did SHE have an earful against May as usual (and can't say I blame her, that was just low, even lower than the Hinata Inn dorm girls from Love Hina, aka Naru and her posse. At least they would have STUCK with the written exams regardless of difficulty just to get into Tokyo University).

This is why I felt Serena's getting into showcases was written MUCH better than this regarding her similar arc.

Ugh... as if I needed even MORE reason to compare May to Naru Narusegawa from Love Hina. This is one of the reasons I DON'T like her at all especially in hindsight.

And this is also another reason I think comparing May to Misty is an insult to Misty. If anything, May was more similar to Misty's SISTERS instead.

And it's also really hard to hate Max with that crap (even if he was similarly badly written, it's kind of hard to hate a guy when getting punched just for attempting to help solve a case)...

Moreorless my problem as well, especially with Love Hina (and Naru was DEFINITELY very underdeveloped and doesn't really change even when she was canonically revealed to be that promise girl, which ends up creating dank implications of what their married life would be like).

Honestly, I don’t even understand the argument that Ash is a bad trainer because he hasn’t won any leagues. If you pay attention to the series, every league that Ash has entered, every singe one, the winner has appeared to be in their late teens/early-mid 20s.

Ash is ten years old and has made it into the top 8 in every conference since Johto. There have to be at least 400 trainers who enter the tournaments each year, and he makes it into the top 8. That’s not being an unskilled trainer.

Agreed, though that being said, to be fair, if you used Hoenn or Unova as a basis, that misinformation is somewhat understandable considering he either stayed at the same rank (and was overall WAY less impressive than the immediate prior league) or worse, SUNK a rank. And personally, I find the instances where the anime doesn't even COUNT clear victories by Ash as actually MEANING anything like with Orange Islands or Battle Frontier as being WAY worse than the actual losses Ash got (at least most of those losses had him going UP a rank as compensation to imply he got better).

How do you feel about dissenters of the pokemon anime using the Pokebeach interview about how the girls are only used for eye candy as an examble for the "bad writing and represnetation" of said female characters at the time? Frankly it annoys me since they're ignoring the actual contesnt of the anime entirely to make a point but I wanted to know your thoughts

I think people who have a problem with the anime in that regard are justified in thinking that. Considering how the anime often shelves characters away, saying the girls were eye candy was absolutely insensitive. The girls are not and should not be mere visual commodities. Of course people in this fandom, especially girls, would get upset at a statement that essentially says to the female audience that the girl characters weren’t made for them but made for boys. How are they ignoring the “actual content” of the anime when they’ve basically been told by the horse’s mouth itself that the characters they identify with the most in the anime aren’t there to be actual characters (you know, “actual content”) but mere decoration? Please think about that and please have more empathy for the sisters in our fandom.

I'll be blunt, Hidaka was WAY worse there than Shudo was with Misty. At least Shudo actually WANTED to have Misty stand on her own terms and not be reduced to a love interest, and if anything his blog was him whining about how he failed in that endeavor (presumably due to Hidaka pushing that view on him), while Hidaka couldn't even care less about the girls' individual characterizations if he tried (that's also part of the reason why I'm NOT fond of May, I've seen her depiction before with those Fiorello Cappuccino Fangirls and also Love Hina).

How do you feel about the designs of Ash (post the OS), and the female companions all looking older than 10, despite all being canonically 10 years old? May, Dawn and Serena are all designed to look like early teenagers, whereas Misty is wrongly assumed to be 12 by fans at the start of the show even though she's also 10. Why are the girls designed to look like teenagers if they're all supposed to be 10? Shouldn't they just make them teens to begin with to avoid controversy about their age?

I don’t know about you but they all look ten to me. Maybe Serena and Misty may look a bit older but that’s because they’re the tallest ten-year-olds relative to the others in the series.

Eh... May might look a LOT older than 10 considering her breast size in AG (ironically, DP made her look closer to an actual 10 year old).
