âoppositional defiant disorderâ is a bullshit diagnosis that only exists because psychiatry has never been willing to admit that:
1. children can be traumatized, especially by their parents and authority figures; and
2. irritability, anger, defiance, and resentment toward wrongdoers are common reactions to trauma, especially trauma that is caused by abuse
pathologizing a traumatized child for being defiant toward an authority figure who has fucking traumatized them is victim-blaming, plain and simple

I was âdiagnosedâ with this one and spent my childhood in therapy â being fixed and trained to behave â without once having anyone tell me that the ongoing domestic violence and abuse situation in my home may have had something to do with it, and maybe ought to, yâknow, stop. My childhood therapist never knew. As far as I recall, she never even asked.
