hi tumblr. first post. who likes megorka
(adding a billion freaking tags so i have a Chance)
literally though if you feel like your life is slipping through your fingers and every day goes too fast… try doing hard things, not just taking the easy route, like reading and making art and exercising and cooking a meal from scratch and journaling, doing these things without distraction, without being absorbed on a screen… the time will stretch and you’ll be reminded that life is long and beautiful if you make it so.
Reblogging this with these tags because oh my goodness
To the person I reblogged this from THANK YOU i am now going to stick this on my pinboard where I’m gonna see it every single day
“Life is long and beautiful if you make it so”
I just want you all to know, that if and when this site does experience a real exodus and/or get sunsetted for good, even if we don't keep in touch I'll remember you so fondly. You're the online equivalent of the other kid on the beach where we built sandcastles together; the girl at the campsite where we explored the trees. You're the man next to me on the train who chatted cheerfully to pass the time when we got delayed. You're the drunk person who shared kind words in the bathroom at the club, you're the talented artists at the life drawing class or the poetry night in a city where I don't live anymore. It makes me sad that maybe in the future our paths won't cross so easily, but even when we leave this little shared piece of cyberspace, carried away on our briefly intersecting trajectories, just know I still love you
btw this is doubly true for the trans users, users of color, and activist users who've experienced so much difficulty in getting their voices heard here. And for the artists and writers who shared their work so generously, in good faith that sadly hasn't been repaid. You endlessly enrich Tumblr with your presence and I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this and make these tough decisions
Giving someone something they need that you never got and feeling the love and passion crash over you is proof we are who we needed and not a shred of pain is wasted
im so normal abt them... i swear...
i like to pretend i already died and asked god to send me back to earth so i can swim in lakes again and see mountains and get my heart broken and love my friends and cry so hard in the bathroom and go grocery shopping 1,000 more times. and that i promised i would never forget the miracle of being here
Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life, Amy Krouse Rosenthal
I’ve never understood live fast and die young mentalities. Mostly because I’ve met a bunch of old people who never stopped living fast.
Why try to die young when you can be an old man at a rave?
The world needs more old women in denim dresses doing shots at the family picnic. You’d deprive us all of that? You’d just let your chaotic personality go to waste? I just can’t wrap my head around that.
You’ve gotta think long term. When I’m a fat old man I’m gonna start wearing a wizard hat and collect vaguely orb shaped paperweights.
Live fast die old surrounded by weird stuff from the experiences that brought you joy
kinda random, but as someone who has serious existential slash depressive meltdowns more frequently than i’d like, i’ve been trying to find my way out of these thought mazes for years, and i’ve come to the conclusion that trying to combat it by going a few levels even more abstract in the philosophical meter - which is what i personally thought had to be the answer for a long time - is, in a lot of cases, counterproductive
what i mean by that is that i’m (still slowly) beginning to realize that the only remedy for those particular types of crisis is not isolating yourself even more radically from tangible human experiences and trying to find the answer in your own head, but to fully immerse yourself in daily life as much as possible, and allow yourself to be really, truly part of the world you live in - a kind of poiesis of being, if we’re trying to be poetic, that’s about reinventing yourself with each second you remain open to the reality that is existing in the present moment. that won’t magically sort shit out for you, but i get the feeling it helps paint a different mental picture in which your thoughts can roam in, and maybe find different, new and hopefully better paths of thinking/being
having a rich inner life is possibly the most valuable part of existing as someone capable of cognizant thought, but if your brain goes at 100mph on the daily, it can reach exhaustion levels in the blink of an eye and start almost cannibalizing itself with anxiety and circular thought patterns. the beginning of it is: take a moment to stop. check out that building, the cobblestones in this street, that person selling their artwork on the sidewalk. this is the city you live in. these are the people you’re in the world with. there’s life outside of yourself
when brene brown said “vulnerability is the path back to each other” and bell hooks wrote “cynicism is the great mask of the disappointed and betrayed heart” and amir levine wrote “if you want to take the road to independence and happiness, find the right person to depend on and travel down it with that person” and thich nhat hanh said “you cannot resist loving another person when you really understand them” and barbara l fredrickson wrote “your past moments of love and connection make you lastingly wiser”
basically that to be loved is to be seen, that vulnerability is the key to a joyful life, and that cynicism refrains us from the beautiful impact of intimacy
being a jack of all trades master of none is actually so awesome bc i can make the shittest clay sculpture and the ugliest drawing and the sloppiest painting and the worst hand stitches and the wonkiest earrings and it's like. who cares + now im surrounded by lots of different silly things i made with love and care etc
My great uncle, who loved cooking and engineering and traveling and far too many other things, always used to say:
"Among the cooks, I am the best engineer, and among the engineers I am the best cook."
I love that. It's one of the things I try to live by.
If your plot feels flat, STUDY it! Your story might be lacking...
Stakes - What would happen if the protagonist failed? Would it really be such a bad thing if it happened?
Thematic relevance - Do the events of the story speak to a greater emotional or moral message? Is the conflict resolved in a way that befits the theme?
Urgency - How much time does the protagonist have to complete their goal? Are there multiple factors complicating the situation?
Drive - What motivates the protagonist? Are they an active player in the story, or are they repeatedly getting pushed around by external forces? Could you swap them out for a different character with no impact on the plot? On the flip side, do the other characters have sensible motivations of their own?
Yield - Is there foreshadowing? Do the protagonist's choices have unforeseen consequences down the road? Do they use knowledge or clues from the beginning, to help them in the end? Do they learn things about the other characters that weren't immediately obvious?
