As much as i tried to boycott eurovision this year, the tiktok algorithm is making it so hard ugh but, i am very negatively surprised by one specific thing.
There is a trend going around tiktok that has captions like
"Eurovision in Bulgaria 2027 because Bulgaria will have a budget of 10€ 🤣"
Because yeah poverty and poorness is funny when it's east europeans. Yeah i am tooootally overreacting. Totally. /sarcasm
I beg people to be normal about the economic situations of Slavic countries 💔
1. people making fun of the concept (“bros eating ingredients” and calling us cavemen)
2. people then trying it and the contents making no sense (whole carrots + cheddar cheese???)
3. turning into weird fetish content (ranch in peppers dripping on people’s faces???)
honestly the whole thing gave me such an ick
Sorry for getting to this so late anon!!
Yeah that is genuinely so weird of people for real 🥹😭 I don't get how people feel the need to participate in such "trends" 😕 when they KNOWW that something about them is culturally insensitive, even if they don't know what.
I hate that I have to spend ages trying to find an "aesthetic" photo of our traditional dishes because I'm so scared of people saying/thinking it's "gross" or "bland" or something. it seems like unless it's aesthetically pleasing or well known, people don't mind making fun of it. especially since apparently "(all) white people have no culture" <- hurts to say ngl
People make no effort to pronounce my nams right. At all. "Its easier to say this way." "This is the american / english pronunciation." But if I say your name wrong, we have a whole fit. Its annoying.
Literally! The unnecessary mispronunciation of the letter J in slavic names tooo...
I've been told that i am ,,,probably closed minded and homophobic" because i am Belarusian 😿
As if I have not told in front of this person that i am a non-binary lesbian, and they met my partner 😿😿😿 liek whata is the correlation?
That's such a weird stereotype... Slavic people do not appreciate it when y'all tell them they are closed-minded yall. There is a lot of us who are very liberal and accepting.. ❤️
im the maternal great grandchild of polish immigrants on fleeing genocide. we have been assimilated, and are basically just white USamericans now. ive tried to talk to my grandparents/parents about how we may have escaped physical annihilation but did not escape cultural annihilation, and my resulting grief over what was lost- they always tell me i "don't know how good i have it" and that "natural change over time isn't a product of genocide" ignoring that being forced to flee for our lives is not natural.
obviously i know that assimilation into the cultural hegemony of the US has led to immense privileges. but i still feel a desire to connect with my heritage, and while i am doing it on my own, it hurts i cannot do that alongside my family, because they do not care.
Thank you for sharing 🫂🫂
I wish I could give you any other advice other than my pure encouragement to continue your journey of connecting with your culture :( it sucks that your family is so apathetic towards that..
