While I'm happy that I'm starting to see more people accept that Phantom is nonbinary, I've been seeing lots of people refer to this fact as a 'headcanon' which has just felt kinda wrong to me. A headcanon implies that it's a non-canon trait about a character, but for Phantom, it's part of who they are as a character and isn't something that I see as a little quirk. Grand Mother Silk only wanted daughters, but they were brave enough to against that and directly defy the will of the very being who created them. That's more that just a fun little headcanon that fills in the blanks of the official storyline.

One of the biggest arguments I see is people saying that Grand Mother Silk only wanted daughters and because of this they can't be nonbinary. To that, I simply ask why they were sent away to the lowest parts of The Citadel away from where anyone could see them to carry out the dirty work of those above them? Even the weavers weren't exiled and they were actively plotting against her. They left Pharloom of their own will. But Grand Mother Silk actively chose to send Phantom away because she saw them as a failure and something that needed to be hidden away in shame. This isn't just a silly little headcanon. It is a clear representation of the reality that so many nonbinary people have to face after coming out.
