since my list of black sapphic books that i made last year for black history month is circulating again, i figured for this year i’d put together a list of black sapphic musicians!

-> artists with a (*) next to their name have been marked this way because they frequently work within other genres. they’re classified based mainly on the predominant sound of their music, not necessarily because all of their music sounds that way
-> “why wasn’t [insert wildly popular artist here] included?” i’ve tried to keep this list somewhat limited to lesser-known or lesser-recommended artists, with the exception of a few personal favorites. i find that these lists often have the same few artists on them and i wanted to shy away from doing that
-> “why wasn’t [insert genre here] included?” either i don’t tend to listen to that genre much myself, and therefore don’t have many recommendations for it, or i simply wasn’t able to find many artists that fit the criteria within it. please don’t think the very limited list of genres i have laid out here is all i want to hear your recommendations from— any genre is welcome!
please, please, please give more recommendations if you have them!! this is a very small list and not comprehensive at all. these are mostly artists i like, but i’m always looking for new music to listen to. happy black history month 2026!
