she scoffed, her voice full of teasing, “oh really? because if i remember correctly you’re the one that keeps coming back for more.” eli tried to say no to the offer but caved, “maybe just find out what’s going on? and see what he’s really thinking?”

            “then, i guess you have the same effect on me. we’re even, yeah?” he rolled his eyes, shaking his head, the corner of his lip pulling into a smile.  “assholes think alike so this will be pretty easy.”

GRACE CALLAHAN.

she chewed on her bottom lip, looking at the state of him. “were you busy? am i interrupting? i can leave i’m sorry- i didn’t- i should’ve asked-” she rambled softly. grace twisted the ring on her finger nervously, feeling her heart pound in her chest. “i had just wanted to talk but if you had things to do it’s okay.”

         “no, not at all, i just came back from a jog.” though the lack of sweat and an aura of exhaustion was enough evidence of his lie. “seriously, what is it?” he closed the door behind her and continued to walk over to his sofa and plop down, undoing the ties on his shoes. “well? sit down. my place is your place, sis.”

“i think some small part of me does still love you.” she mused softly before laughing. “of course i love him, i love him so much it hurts. i don’t know how he feels about me or maya. it’s not easy to get anything out of him.” 

            “yes, well, i do have that effect on people.” he retorted with a smug grin. “well elijah is a stone cold bitch. i could talk some sense into him, if you want me to? i can be very persuasive. that and i’ve got so much time in my hands i don’t know what to do with it.”

GRACE CALLAHAN.

the weight of the truth had been eating at grace for years. it’s something that loomed over her shoulders and sat behind every door. when she started dating she convinced herself that it was what she wanted, that it was real and good and right. now when she thought of dates and men and all the different bases she wanted nothing more than to cry. a term she had picked when she was sixteen to label herself kept resurfacing more and more the longer she kept pretending. 

grace jumped when her doorbell rang, breaking her growing panic. she had called the least likely person for her to ever share this information with, but the only person she could actually tell. when she opened the door the idea of slamming it closed again crossed her mind but she held it open even wider, “hey ol.”

            ollie was about to run out for an afternoon jog when he was greeted by his step sister, who looked like she had her guard down and had a little bit less of the snark in her. “.... hey?” he was beyond confused. “do you need something?” he’s never actually seen her in such a state, so he didn’t know how to act around her. “sorry, come in.” he stepped aside, holding out the door for her.

she rolled her eyes at him, “if you loved all of them equally as you say you do, this includes me.” elina smiled, knowing she would catch him here, “and if you really loved me then we wouldn’t be a secret.” she waited a beat to soak in his reaction to her words, loving every second of it. “and complicated as in this guy and i have only ever been hook ups, but we might as well have been dating by the way we act, and let’s not forget he’s the father of my kid.”

           “oh c’mon, eli.” he sighed, aware of how true her statement was—is. “you know i did love you back then, and still, the circumstances just wasn’t right for us.” he rolled his shoulders nonchalantly. “hmm, well... the solution is really easy. do you love him? does he love you back? does he love your kid? if you check all those out of the checklist, then you guys should just fuck it out and just date already.”

SAGE OLIVIERA.

sage did not hesitate to wrap her arms around him, immediately pulling him closer as she almost cradled him against her. she hated this. it wasn’t the first time she had seen ollie fall apart but now she knew that it didn’t get any easier. she didn’t care where the empty bottle of water ended up, not when it was far more important to make sure she could find a way to help him. “it’s going to be okay, we’ll figure this out, and i’m not… i’m not going anywhere.”

              being clasped into an embrace was one of his pet peeves, but hers was something he could deal with, especially in moments like these. when he was too drunk to stop the emotions coming out of him. he wrapped her arms around her weakly, burying his head on her shoulders. “i’m... a mess... i don’t know what i’m fucking doing...” he confessed, clinging onto her tighter. “i tried... i really did, sage. you believe me right? you’re on my side?” he pulled his head up to look at her with bleary eyes.

“right your girlfriend, your wife, your dirty mistress, the girl you’re in love with, and one i can’t seem to remember.” she dropped her head a little when he mentioned someone else, a dead giveaway. “it’s a little more complicated than that.” 

       “hypothetically speaking,” he paused. “would it be crazy to say that i love all these girls—you’re telling me i allegedly have—equally? you know... polyamory is a thing... but again, this is all hypothetical... of course.” he waved his hand in dismissal. “eh, you know what forget it. you said complicated? how complicated? because trust me, i know complicated.”

she let out a soft laugh, “no no i’m fine i just…” she takes his face in her hands, trying to soften the blow that should’ve been coming for ages now. “i don’t think we should do this anymore.” elina said that as nicely as she could, not wanting to seriously disrupt anyone here. “and it’s not you.. and your four different significant others, it’s something i have to do.”

       he’d been expecting this sooner or later, though that didn’t make it less of a surprise. “well, okay. yeah, sure. if you really want to.” he nods his head slowly, a little bit hesitant, but he wanted to support her decision a hundred percent. “it’s actually five, but hey, who’s counting? not me.” he scoffed, laughing almost. “okay, but if it’s not me. then it’s you? or if there like... i don’t know... someone else? god, that conversation is really... awkward.”

SAGE OLIVIERA.

“yeah… i’m really glad we did,” the smile on her lips morphed into a mischievous grin, “otherwise i probably wouldn’t have cupcakes right now.” sage concluded with a laugh and for a moment it was like she had to think about it. she looked from ollie to the cupcake in her hand, drawing it closer towards her almost protectively, “if you don’t then your opinion’s still wrong, it’s as simple as that.” sage stated, holding up the cupcake as an offering.

          he rolled his eyes, endeared at the childishly greedy manner sage was portraying. leaning forward, he grabbed her wrist and took a bite from her cupcake. he chewed for a while, scrunching his eyebrows, nodding his head in an obviously faux deep contemplation, then swallowing the thing to come to his conclusion. “wow,” he sighed. “it still tastes as horrible as i remembered it. really nothing special about these.” he shrugged his shoulders. “i don’t get the hype.”

MONA BASHIR.

Mona pulled back at Ollie, trying to calm her internal fears, “I promise I won’t get mad,” She said honestly. “Tell me what’s going on,” She said, taking a deep breath. “You’re scaring me Ollie,” She admitted. “Just tell me,”

           her promise didn’t seem to alleviate the guilt that still weighed him down, if anything, it made him feel ever heavier. “i just—” he took a deep breath. “just... know that i really care for you... and i never wanted to hurt you... and i’m telling you, because i don’t want you to hear it from anyone else... just—just keep that in your mind, okay?” he didn’t know how to start, honestly because it was his first time actually confessing things like this, he usually just got caught. “i—uh... cheated on you...” he held her hands hastily. “... multiple times.” he added quietly.

everything about what they were doing was almost perfect according to standard. his hand placement, the whispered dirty talk, the dark red marks she left on his neck, the urgent kisses he left down hers. perfect. good. great even. but something felt wrong. she kissed him, holding on to the feeling of his lips on hers, before trying to catch his attention, “ol- stop-” pulling her body back from him she dropped the full name in attempts to get him to stop, “ollivander.”

           he pulled back the minute she snapped. “what’s wrong?” he tilts his head to the side, brows knitting together in confusion. “did i do something wrong? are you having a cramp? a little hungry? need a break? feeling dehydrated? what’s wrong eli?” he scooted over to give her some space to breathe.

SAGE OLIVIERA.

rolling her eyes sage scoffed, “well, aren’t you lucky.” she mumbled, far more focused on the cupcake in her hand than the story of his brief high school romance. though she did take a moment to note just how strange it was that now other exes was something they just casually talked about. though, sage wasn’t so sure it would’ve been weird before, at one point ollie had been the one person she’d been convinced she could share anything with. “we ended better than we could’ve for sure.” sage agreed, “i don’t doubt that, not for a second.”

         “we ended up far better than most people who are break up, that’s for sure.” maybe the reason they could act so casual around each other is because they’ve been through a lot together. you couldn’t just cancel someone who played a major part in your life out. it just didn’t work that way, at least not to ollie. “hey, come give me a bite. maybe i’ll like it this time around.”

SAGE OLIVIERA.

she sighed in relief when ollie made his own way to her couch without any real assistance. sage wasn’t sure but she was fairly certain she was unable to support ollie’s stupidly tall frame, in all sincerity sage wasn’t keen on finding out. as ollie fell onto her couch sage slipped away to pick a bottle of water out of her fridge before sitting down next to him, “okay, but you need to drink some water first, can you do that for me?” sage coaxed, running her fingers through the strands of his hair.

         nodding his head slowly he replied hoarsely, “o-okay.” he groaned as he sat up, his head barely keeping up with the slightest movements. he felt comforted by her simple gesture, and despite being drunk, he still had half a mind to be grateful. he took the bottle of water from her hands, twisting it open with a pop! and chugged down the liquid, emptying the bottle within seconds. “i’m so fucked.” he laughed dryly, resting his head on her shoulder. “jesus fucking christ i’m a goddamned idiot.” he continued laughing, until it became a desperate sob.

SAGE OLIVIERA.

shaking her head sage scoffed, “i don’t even want to know why you know that, but i think i’ll stick to avoiding getting blood stains on things if i can.” she bit back quickly and it was simple, responding to his smartass commentary with just as much snark in her own voice. it was all too weird just how easy it was to fall into the same patterns again. “has any of your relationships ever ended well on your part?” sage questioned, lifting a cupcake out of the box, swiping her finger across the frosting before eating it a sigh of happiness and contentment on her lips, “you did good, greene.” she flashed him a smile before folding down the paper of the cupcake and taking a bite.

           “well, since you’re asking, there is actually one. it was way back during high school, cheerleader, always wore those nice tight short uniforms, a little dim witted, but she made up for it in other ways. we broke up but, we stayed friends... with benefits. so i guess you can count that as a happy ending for me.” he narrated the short lived romance with a self satisfied grin. “and i like to think you and i ended quite well.” he shrugged his shoulders, sitting back on the couch. “if i put my mind into it, there can be really great results so you’re welcome.”

SAGE OLIVIERA.

“because i’m impatient, though clearly not as impatient as you, it’s like you don’t even know what’s in the box.” sage teased, lifting the box off the table as she shuffled on the couch, leaning against his side. “please don’t rip your eyes out, it’s far too messy and getting blood out of things takes too much effort.” she informed him and it was almost as if she was scolding him, without even glancing at him, gaze on the box and excited smile forming as she lifted the lid of the box, “god i missed this.” 

         “i hear that you add a little bit of water to club soda and you have the perfect elixir for blotting off any blood stains. you’re welcome.” he retorts with his smartass tone, instantly melting when he heard he excitement. there was always the need to see her happy, he always thought it was because of the heavy guilt he felt for keeping, and still keeping, vital information from her, but it was more than that. he just genuinely wanted to see her smile. “well? what are you waiting for? take a bite. and don’t worry i didn’t lace these with poison if that’s why you’re hesiting. i’m not snow white’s step mom. though i did date this girl who was a wiccan once... that did not end well on my part.”

SAGE OLIVIERA.

“i don’t doubt that, but we can’t have you standing out here.” the brunette insisted softly, concern written across her features as she tried to nudge his taller frame into her apartment. despite his clearly dishevelled state and need of help sage couldn’t help but feel almost smug that he’d come to her, that there wasn’t somebody else’s doorstep where he had ended up, “lets just get you to sit down and we can talk, and you can have some water… and a mint.”

       when he saw the couch, he immediately took up all the energy he, surprisingly, still had inside him and dragged himself to it. plopping down and laying completely still for a moment to gather his bearings and try to rationalise things in his mind, but that proved to be a bit of a challenge with his brain swimming in whatever alcoholic drink he consumed a gallon of. “i don’t think i can talk, sage. can you just, hold me?” it was ridiculous and sounded so vulnerable, he couldn’t believe those words came out of him.

SAGE OLIVIERA.

the thud against the door wouldn’t have been enough to wake her but it was enough to draw her attention from her coursework. perhaps partially because really sage wanted an excuse to look away from it. she wasn’t sure whats he expected when she opened the door but it wasn’t ollie, hunched up and looking far more defeated than she ever preferred seeing him. it had been months, no scratch that, years, since this had happened and sage almost felt transported back in time. she still crouched down, gentle hand finding his chin as she guided him to look at her, “lets get you inside, okay?”

           once the door opened, he instantly regrets his impulsive decision to come to her in a desperate attempt to feel less alone. he was continuously disrupting sage’s life, it was getting a little selfish, but he kept on doing it anyway.  he tried to stand up, leaning on the door frame for a little support. “i fucked up sage. i really fucked up this one.” he managed to speak coherently.
