i love nature, science, art, and other humans. I reblog a lot of memes about science and academia, cute animal pictures, art, poetry, and photography I find beautiful or interesting, and information that I think is worth reading. Queer solidarity. Black lives matter. I'm not the best at remembering to tag, so if you are uncomfortable with the content i reblog you might want to unfollow. I reblog photos of animals some people do not like, such as bats, snakes, and rodents, as well as some posts that have medical contexts to them. Sometimes I will reblog things that have gore like what you might see in a nature documentary. I share these things out of academic and artistic interest in our world.

some birds are very intuitively named. looked up a sparrow going chipchipchip in my yard, it was a chipping sparrow. saw a black bird with red wings, it was a red winged blackbird. gray bird that sounds like a cat? gray catbird. the first time i saw a house finch it was perched on a windowsill. They found a whole lot of the rest of Spicomellus, aka one of the oldest ankylosaurians

Turns out it's also the spikiest

And apparently sacral shields and tail weapons go all the way back too

Let me once again highlight the fact that this guy has bony spike on its ribs.

to quote the NHM article linked above:

“This is completely unlike any animal living or dead, and raises real questions about how this animal moved,” Susannah explains. “Normally, bones like the ribs are used for muscle attachment, but because of the spikes it’s hard to tell where the muscles could have gone.” “Frankly, we have very little idea about how this dinosaur would have moved at all.”

Like, the extreme spikes on the neck and above hips are one thing, and they hypothesize on their evolutionary origin and relation with other ankylosaurs, but wtf was it doing with a spiky ribs.
