BIOGRAPHY:

The existence of Peter Pettigrew has always been entirely defined by the people in his life at any given moment. With the Marauders, he felt invincible. He could do anything and go anywhere to hell with the consequences, so long as Remus, Sirius and James were there to take the brunt of them for him. With his parents, he wasn’t at all capable of looking after himself, not when they were there to smother him and protect him from anything he was remotely uncomfortable with. Within the Order of the Phoenix he can revel in the spotlight that he steals from his friends and with the Death Eaters he thrives off the sense of power they provide him with. Every conversation, every interaction, is calculated. Peter perfectly curates a new version of himself for every situation he finds himself in and he excels in the art of fabrication and evasion. Some may call this manipulation, he calls it survival.

Growing up, Peter’s time was split evenly between both his parents who arguably loved him a little too much. His mother was a witch and his father a muggle, and while they couldn’t seem to make a marriage work, they did everything they could to provide Peter with a loving childhood. His father initially wasn’t too thrilled with being abruptly brought into the Wizarding World and thus began a string of arguments and unkind words that the Pettigrews couldn’t come back from. This, however, provided young Peter with two adults that he could work off each other to get anything he wanted. He may have been overly sheltered and inherited more anxiety and questionable opinions than any young boy should, but the thrill he got from causing yet another fight between his parents was worth it.

At school, life was pretty much perfect for Peter. Was he aware that he didn’t quite fit in with his peers? Yes. Did this stop him from craving their attention and validation? Absolutely not. Peter was proud of how easily he snaked his way into the Marauders and even though he would worry that he wasn’t as good as them, that one day they might realise and kick him aside, he knew he had earned a place at their side. The rest of the world could whisper that he was a tag along, not really one of the rowdy Gryffindor boys, but Peter had firmly rooted himself in their lives and he was determined to hang on as long as they would allow him to. Riding on the coattails of others’ successes is not an easy task, but Peter almost makes it look effortless even though, deep down, he’s a nervous wreck that one day it might all disappear. It is for this reason that he has now found himself dragged into the Order of the Phoenix.

Little do the rest of the Order know, Peter keeps a rather huge secret up his left sleeve. War had never been something he had wanted to be a part of, so when his friends rushed into the Wizarding War head first, Peter tried to remain separate from it, but not long after being pulled on to the “good” side, he found himself being drawn to the “bad”. When it all comes down to it, Peter’s number one priority is himself. He has very little regard for other people if it in some way puts himself in a bad situation. Peter is both a little bit in love with and simultaneously afraid of every single person that crosses his path, so if he feels he can earn something or feels threatened, he will do anything for almost anyone if it benefits him in some way.

As the war raged on, he started to wonder if he was on the right side. What would happen to him if the Order lost? All of the power seems to be in the palm of Voldemort’s hand and he craves that power. Peter is a proficient liar, a time bomb of anxiety, and an avid lover of cheese. Nothing will stop him from surviving this war, and certainly not his morals.

There was no stopping the look of annoyance from resurfacing. Not when his words were met with a snort. His eyebrows rose up a marginal amount and he was left waiting with bated breath, expression daring the younger Death Eater to go on. If he weren’t exhausted, the look could have counted as murderous. At least, until Peter actually spoke up.

The chuckle escaped before he could stop it and if Peter looked closely, he may have been able to spot a hint of amusement along the edge of Lucius’ lips. He tried to maintain a stoic expression but it quickly faltered. “So did I,” He admitted with another chuckle, taking a moment to look Peter over. He was impressed the younger man had enough nerve to joke around him. Most of the newer recruits lacked that sort of confidence — or stupidity had it been a day he was in a bad mood. “We should,” He murmured then took a step back from the counter, gaze shifting over where the shrivelfig should have been. “Assuming my father has been on top of keeping the basic ingredients in stock. Hold on a moment?”

Peter stood there with his lips sealed in a tight line, but didn’t dare break eye contact with Lucius. He would have his meltdown about it later; right now he didn’t want Lucius to know that he was afraid of him and what he might do. There was even a brief moment when he wondered if he would recognise the potion ingredients and what he was planning to make with them. They were relatively common in many potions, so perhaps without mentioning the additional ingredients he already had, it wouldn’t be obvious that he was making a euphoria potion.

As the chuckle left Lucius’ lips, Peter almost collapsed where he stood. Was that a genuine laugh? Had he made Lucius Malfoy laugh? A slight blush rose in his cheeks that he wasn’t quick enough to get under control. A goodhearted response and a second chuckle later and Peter couldn’t quite believe or understand what was happening. “Thanks...” He replied cautiously, his eyes finally shifting to look around the shop again. “Sure, I’ll just...” He spun an index finger, implying that he would go back to his wandering while he waited. “You always have to cover this place for your dad?” Great. Now he was trying to make small talk with him.

Peter sat nervously outside the office of Rodolphus Lestrange, his knee bouncing on the floor causing loose objects nearby to rattle where they stood. He needed a job, he did, but did he really need to take this job? Being the personal assistant to this man could surely only end in bad things for Peter, but he supposed it would be somewhat beneficial to get on the good side of any of the Death Eaters. It was also good from an Order side of things as he could use this as an excuse to snoop around and maybe get some praise from the good guys. It was a win-win despite Peter feeling like he might die from fear. The door to his left opened and he immediately stood, greeting his new boss. “Hey. Hi. Sir.” Merlin... “I’m looking forward to working with you.”

Things were unusually busy in Diagon Alley for a random Tuesday, ahe had only come here to get a few last minute things she needed for the reunion at the state tomorrow and maybe get something for herself if she saw anything she liked. What she didn’t know, however, was that there was some kind of event and many of the stores were having special deals and things like that, and so people were going crazy. She could barely walk, it was truly annoying that everything was so crowded and for such a silly reason too. She wanted to leave right away but she also really needed those items, so after being told that soon enough things should be fine she decided to go to the Tree Broomsticks and wait for things to calm down.

Unsurprisingly, the place was also full, but soon enough she saw an empty table and made her way there. She had just got to it when someone who apparently also had the same idea got to it at the same time, she sighed looking at the other person, it took her a brief moment to realise who it was, one of Sirius’ friends..Peter, yes. “Hello..Peter..right?”

The streets outside The Three Broomsticks were alarmingly overrun due to the sales for that stupid event and, while Peter did enjoy a good bargain, it was all becoming a bit too much for him. He didn’t trust large crowds of people. They contained too many opportunities for him to run into people from both sides of his double life and the last thing he ever wanted was for those two worlds to collide. Seeing his school friends get up in the faces of his Death Eater... associates set his teeth on edge. It was just so much easier to push his way to the back of a bar and wait out the crowds before trying to do any shopping, but his hopes of remaining unseen were quickly dashed when a girl asked him to confirm his name right as they were both moving to take the empty table.

“Um... yeah. I’m Peter?” His brow furrowed as he looked at her, trying to place why she was so recognisable. Obviously they had went to Hogwarts at the same time, but she wasn’t ringing any bells as someone who actively spent time with him or his friends. Oh wait, she was related to Sirius in some way, right? It came back to him quickly once he had made that association and he swiftly remembered that one night in school when he was having a meltdown in the library and that one nice Slytherin girl helped him to study. “Alexia, yeah?” Peter’s eyes drifted back to the table and, even though he internally sighed at not getting to be alone, he gestured to the two chairs. “You want to share?”

Ivy had noticed Peter the moment she walked in to start her shift. She always tended to look towards the back table when she came in, it was almost always occupied by somebody looking to stay hidden. She wasn’t surprised to see Peter there, she knew that he was living some sort of double life. He was a part of them, had the Mark on his arm, but he still hung out with those group of losers he’d been following around since school. Ivy always wondered what his intentions were, and maybe today she’d be able to get some sort of answers from him.

It seemed like a quiet night, Ivy took a few minutes to set up the bar before she walked out into the dining area, picking up the empty glasses on the tables before she stopped beside Peter, leaning on the seat opposite him. “No, not usually.” She replied, shaking her head, “But you’re the only person here and I’m bored. So, you have to deal with my company, whether you like it or not.”

At her response, Peter raised an eyebrow and shuffled in his seat as if it suddenly was the most uncomfortable booth in Britain. What angle was she trying to play here? They were both a part of the Death Eaters, but they weren’t exactly best friends and he wasn’t naïve enough to think that Ivy Parkinson would actually want to hang out with him- he wasn’t naïve enough to think that any Death Eater would want to be his friend- so she must have some other motive for making her way over to him. “Weird way to spend your shift, but alright.” He shrugged one shoulder and gestured that she could sit. “I could think of worse ways to spend the evening.” He winked at her, somehow making the action seem casual while internally screaming at himself to consider reeling it in a little. “You allowed to drink while working?”

Mary liked the Hog’s Head. There she could be invisible, there nobody knew what had happened to her (except for fucking Ivy), and if they did know they didn’t care. It was easy to be anonymous. Much easier then Diagon Alley or the plethora of other places that she could go for a drink. She would undoubtedly run into someone who would have that look of pity on their face. A look that she was just so tired of. So she had decided to come to the Three Broomsticks. Making her way towards her usual spot in the bar, the little booth in the corner with her drink, she was surprised to see someone in the booth already. And even more surprised when she saw Peter. “Well, I was headed this way since it’s my usual booth,” Mary retorted with a shrug. “I mean I guess if you don’t want company I’ll find somewhere else since I guess you were there first,” Mary sighed.

Realising that it was Mary who had approached him, Peter sat up a little straighter, his tone softening. “Sorry, Mary. Of course you can join me.” He smiled somewhat shyly at her as if embarrassed by his previous snarky comment. “Been a bit of a long day and I-... I’m sorry.” He offered the apology again. It was easy to fall back into how he had been at school with people like Mary; maybe that’s who he was meant to be- quiet, awkward, kind- but nothing had been the same since they had graduated. Maybe even before that. He could only imagine that Mary felt similar since her incident with Mulciber. Peter never really knew the details of what happened to her in school, but he got the impression that it hadn’t been good. “What are you drinking? Maybe I can get your next one?”

It was amusing in all honesty. “Peter!” She laughed, registering just who she had collided with. “Guess you caught me during one of my more distracted moments.” Oh truly, while her absentmindedness was rare, when it did occur, one could hardly go by without noticing just how far away her thoughts may have been.

The witch allowed a chuckle to push past her lips. “Oh, no. Not at all, actually.” A small pause. “This may sound odd but I was simply enjoying the rain. It’s almost peaceful.” In times like these. Emmeline glanced around, admiring the empty yet rain filled alley around them. While the young woman had no issues with the thought of crowds or people in general, every now and then a moment of peace and quiet was just what she needed. Perhaps it was a reminder of what the world was; what it could be. “What brings you out here? Also an admirer of the weather others avoid?”

Peter’s stance relaxed a fraction as Emmeline laughed. As uncomfortable as people in the Order sometimes were with her due to her being a Slytherin, he had never suspected her of playing both sides- probably because he, himself, was playing both sides. If she was one of the Death Eaters, surely Peter would know about it, so the only thing he had to fear from her was the same thing he feared from everyone else: that they would figure out his secret. “Honestly, I’m just glad you didn’t take my eye out with your brolly.” Peter smiled as he booped the edge of her umbrella with his index finger, pushing it back from his eye level so he could see her better.

“Well, this may sound odd, but I agree.” He shook his hair out, running a hand through it to emphasise how wet it was and how little he seemed to care. “I was standing here with my eyes closed. Not that you would have seen anything under that brolly even if you had been paying attention.” He joked, lightly mocking her height before shrugging in response. “I had dinner with my mum and I was probably heading home, but yeah, sometimes you just have to stand in a heavy downpour, you know? Avoiding others is definitely a bonus.”

Peter was sat at an isolated table towards the back corner of the Hog’s Head Inn, his fingers absentmindedly tracing the cracks on his stein of butterbeer. Sometimes he just needed to be alone; needed a moment of silence where he could recharge his energy for however many days until he could get his next break. As effortless as he made it look, lying to every single person in his life twenty four-seven could become exhausting. Being afraid all the time was exhausting. The Hog’s Head Inn always felt like the better choice when he wanted to avoid the world due to it being much more unkempt than The Three Broomsticks just down the road, so Peter was taken a little off guard when someone was suddenly standing at his table causing him to immediately switch back on. “Do you find that the lonely corner booth is often looking for company?” Merlin, someone was going to curse him one of these days.

Lucius & Open Malfoy Apothecary - Knockturn Alley, Evening

The bell above the door chimed, earning an immediate glare at it from Lucius. “I distinctly told him to switch the sign to closed on his way out,” He groaned. There would have been more to the complaint of a greeting if it weren’t for having enough decorum to leave what would have been a whine about his father for Narcissa to hear instead of dooming a passerby. A moment was needed for Lucius to recollect himself, back straightening while he masked any hint of annoyance with a forced smile.

“Make it quick and do not breathe a word of my being willing to step behind the counter to Abraxas. You will give him false hope of my taking over the family business,” Lucius muttered. The store was barely stocked as it was since it had shifted to being a front for seedier operations but he knew better than to elude to that part of the business. “You are in luck since the wine has recently been restocked. Anything besides what is currently out will require a mail order or returning on Monday.”

When Peter entered the Apothecary only to be met by the irritated mumblings of Lucius Malfoy, he couldn’t stop himself from releasing a snort. While he may be on the same side as a lot of them, it still brought him a certain level of joy to see Slytherins being even remotely inconvenienced. Apparently, the other Death Eater wasn’t supposed to be playing shop in place of his father, but there he was now committing himself to providing customer service. Peter was a little too entertained by the notion and, as he perused the shelves, he simply couldn’t stop the words from slipping from his lips.

“You sure you can handle being this deep in the field? Thought your specialty was paperwork, Malfoy?” It was almost an out of body experience for Peter as he replayed the snide remark over in his mind. What made him think he could just casually mock another Death Eater? In situations like these, it would be better for him to have the other Marauders with him, but no. Here he was, alone, about to be obliterated for his cheek. He forced a cough, hoping to change the subject. “Porcupine quills, infusion of wormwood and a shrivelfig. You got any?” He coughed again, trying to keep his composure. “Please?”

Mere minutes ago she’d entered a shop, her thoughts entirely occupied with the item in her hand only to come back out into what felt like a small end to something. The rain was pouring down, umbrellas to be spotted all around. Emmeline couldn’t help but allow herself a small smile at the sight in front of her. If there was a weather in which she could feel truly herself and hidden at the very same, this was it.

Without glancing around, arm reaching for the umbrella in her hand, the witch turned away from the shop to hurry down the alley. It was something or someone solid she ended up bumping into. “Sorry.” A gasp. “I wasn’t paying attention.” Clearly. A sigh. Emmeline glanced around, scanning for the person or item she’d just crashed into, almost chuckling at how lucky it was that she hadn’t landed herself flat on her butt during the weather. Now she just wanted to hurry home and get working on some of the leftover work from the ministry that the witch had brought home. Curiosity killed the cat; or something.

Peter wasn’t exactly sure where he was walking to when the rain started to pour down. He probably should be getting back home, but sharing an apartment with Remus was sometimes a little too much for him. It was fun, of course, getting to share a home with one of your best friends, but having to always be switched on was stressful to say the least. Every now and then, Peter needed a break from the lying and the fear. Sometimes he just needed to walk alone and finally let himself relax, if only for an hour.

The rain didn’t give him any incentive to cut his alone time short, in fact, he sort of enjoyed the rain and he didn’t even feel the need to use his wand to create a magical umbrella. Peter was quite content to stand in the street, eyes closed, letting the water run through his hair and down his face. It was in this moment that someone collided with him and, not that he would admit it, but it had given him quite the fright. Eyes snapping open, he focused on Emmeline as she apologised and immediately his expression fell into a small smile. “I can see that.” Peter ran a hand through the back of his hair, shaking out some of the water. “Guess it was my own fault for standing in the middle of the street.” His gaze drifted past her for a moment, wondering if she had been in a hurry to get away from something. Maybe it was just the rain. “Somewhere to be?”

Alecto was always on the look out for new brands of food or beverages that she could sell at her bar. The way to keep people coming back was to make sure that there was constantly new items on the menu. This meant she had to keep an eye out for new brands or new things. It was exactly why she was in the Artisan tent. Of course she didn’t think any of the mixer drinks on sale were as good as the things she put together. Alecto was of the opinion that nobody made a cocktail as good as she did. And so she was avoiding those tables. But there were some items that had caught her attention.

She was currently stood a little way away from a stand that had been selling pumpkin flavoured treats. They were yummy but probably not something she’d sell at her shop. She looked up as someone stopped near her. Was she in the way? Probably. But she didn’t care. “Can I help you?” Since the person was just standing there.

Upon seeing Alecto Carrow before him, Peter stopped dead in his tracks, his heart racing a mile a minute as it always did in the presence of other Death Eaters. It didn’t matter how long he had been one of them, they were a scary group of people. However, when she spoke to him- as he always did- Peter held his composure. It was something he had gotten much better at doing since leaving Hogwarts. He could be screaming internally for the entire conversation, but he rarely showed that fear anymore- unless he had a reason to, of course. “Just trying to find a gift for my mum, if that’s alright with you?” Maybe he shouldn’t be pushing his luck with her.

Remus walked slowly along the edge of the tent, curious but apprehensive. Most potions were totally fine for him to take most of the time, but he always worried that this would be the one that disagreed with his system. When these particular potions were designed to cause a little mayhem, he felt quite justified in his caution.

Still, the moon wasn’t upon him yet. He wouldn’t be here otherwise. Perhaps he could be a little more bold in his approach. Remus stepped forward, toward an innocuous-looking little thing. “What do you reckon it does?” He glanced toward the person standing on its other side, raising a brow as if to dare them to go first.

Peter leaned closer to the potion in question, trying to determine what it might do from the colour alone, but it wasn’t exactly something they had learned in Potions class. “Maybe it’ll turn your hair blue.” He offered, making the assumption based on the fluorescent colour of the swirling liquid. Peter raised an eyebrow in response to Remus doing the same, the challenge being thrown back at him. “You think it would turn all hair blue?” The implication being that it might alter Remus’ werewolf fur or Peter’s own rat hair. “You sure you should be playing so fast and loose with the potions, Moony?”
