Parent’s Day — Arlo
She wrung her hands as her brown eyes glanced around. The nerves continued to build as parents invaded the estate? Why was she so nervous? Sure, she hadn’t seen her father in a while, but she just wanted this visit to go smoothly. She wanted to show him she was getting better, that she was trying to improve her relationship with Elise, and maybe introduce him officially to Toni.
Finally, she spotted him through the crowd. A smile lit up her face as their eyes met, Elijah’s eyes lighting up as well. Arlo took a deep breath and sprinted off to him.
“Dad!”
She landed in his arms, causing her father to grunt. His arms wrapped around her as leaned down to kiss the top of her head.
“Hey, kiddo. It’s good to see you.”
The princess felt a slight relief, her nerves fading just slightly. “It’s good to see you, too, Daddy. I’ve missed you. A lot.”
The pair pulled away from each other, and Elijah tucked a piece of hair behind his daughter’s ear. “I’ve missed you, too, Arl. It’s too quiet at home without you and your sister.” He stopped a moment and looked around. “Speaking of which, where is your sister?”
His question caused the Dawson twin to look around. “She’s probably still getting ready.” Arlo took her father’s hand. “Come on, let’s go get lunch.”
The brunette led her father for the cafeteria. The workers were serving up a special lunch in honor of the parents. Arlo grabbed herself a tray then handed one to her dad. The two went through the line getting their food and beverage then Arlo led him over to a table near the middle of the room. And as the two began to eat, Elijah’s eyes rested on his daughter, studying her.
“So, how have you been doing?”
She stabbed her fork into a piece of lettuce before glancing up to him. “Oh, I’m okay. I’m doing good in my classes, and the shrink thinks I’m making progress.”
Her father nodded and took a bite of his food. “But how are you? I know it can be overwhelming, even with your sister here, and I just.. I just want to know you’re both okay.”
Hearing his concern caused her guilt to rise. Arlo could only assume the challenges he faced raising her and Elise alone. And she’ll never forget his tear-stained face after waking up in the hospital. She hated herself for causing her dad so much pain.
After letting out a deep breath, she answered him. “I really am okay. I mean, I have my days, but I’m okay. And I will be okay.” She stopped a moment, Elijah nodding to acknowledge her words. She picked her fork back up and took a bite. “So, how’s Gran?”
The male chuckled. “She’s...fine, I guess. Still a stuffy old bat.”
“Does she still hate me?” The Dawson girl asked bluntly.
“Arlo, your grandmother does not hate you. She’s just extremely worried about you.”
She gave Elijah a look before sighing. “She’s just extremely embarrassed.” The Dawson girl pushed her food aside, more guilt bubbling to the top.
“Arlo, honey, -“ Elijah started.
“No, Dad, I get it. I’d be embarrassed, too. I didn’t mean to embarrass Gran or hurt you or Elise.” Arlo was trying to get out an apology, but the words wouldn’t leave her mouth.
“Oh, honey, I know. We know.” He reached over and gently took her hand into his. “We know now that you needed help. We just want you to get better.”
Her eyes ducked to the table top, and her voice got quiet. “I’m trying, I promise.”
“I know. That’s all I can ask for.”
Her big brown eyes finally glanced up to see a slight smile on her dad’s face. Quickly, her fingers ran below her eyes, collecting the drops of tears that had spilled.
“Hi, Daddy!”
Arlo watched her sister hug her father from behind before taking the seat next to Elijah. She watched the pair catch up as she silently ate her lunch. This is what she missed. Being with her father and sister.
