We apply a “frisket” film to the leather before cutting to reduce/eliminate burn marks. It keeps everything nice and tidy. …(If you like “peeling things”, you’d love this part.) 😊

Biggest laser production day yet! @tactilelight was on fire today. Gonna be up late trying to plow through as many of these as possible. Many more shipments will go out tomorrow!

We know we've disappointed some folks by taking longer than we planned, but we're still workin hard to get everything shipped out! Things don't always go as planned and we're still churning through orders. These (and others) will be on the docket for a day of burnishing and folding tomorrow. :) Thanks for your patience ya'll.

It's been a long stretch of waiting—and we sincerely appreciate the patience of those who have chosen to pre-order with us—but we are finally getting the first round of Natural wallets and phone wallets ready to ship out this week! Retiring the PactMark

When we first conceived of PACT, we were excited about finding a way to do something truly custom with each piece. This led to the creation of the PactMark, the 28-dot visual pattern that would become a unique "brand" for each PACT member. We knew that the complexity level was going to be extremely high, but as we began to implement the system we had devised, we began to feel the true pain of what we'd set out to do.

Like any small manufacturing company, we know we have to be extremely streamlined to survive. And yet we'd given ourselves a feature that required an insane level of technical, procedural, and manufacturing complexity. We could certainly pull it off, but the idea of efficiency would be out the window. It became obvious that this one feature was going to swallow up ridiculous resources to produce and manage.

Even more significantly, to avoid outrageous international rates, we need to be able to utilize shipping and warehousing solutions overseas, and these simply don't work with the kind of one-off custom pieces that we would be producing.

So, after agonizing for weeks over how we might be able to pull it all off, we made the hard decision to remove the PactMark from the equation.

It's possible that at some point in the future we’ll be able to reintroduce this concept, but for now the PactMark will cease to exist. We're simply going to focus on making awesome products.

An Update

It’s been a while since you last heard from us and it is definitely time for an update! Apart from waiting for leather to arrive, we have been hard at work designing and creating the packaging that will accompany each piece, designing and building a gorgeous new website that we'll unveil soon, and organizing the various details that go into setting up a new company.

Leather #1 — Natural

We have recently received our first shipment of leather! This batch, produced by the 133 year-old Hermann Oak Leather Company in St. Louis, is the beautiful undyed vegetable-tanned leather that we've dubbed "Natural." We had hoped to deliver these pieces by the end of September, however the leather took a bit longer to procure than we expected and we still have some production details to iron out. We'll begin cutting and assembling soon, and at this point we are hopeful that we can ship the Natural pieces by the end of October (although we aren’t yet ready to declare an exact date just yet).

Leather #2 — Cognac

The second batch of leather we've been waiting on—the Cognac—is the sumptuous dark brown vegetable-tanned goodness produced by the esteemed Horween Leather Co. in Chicago. We recently had the opportunity to meet with the head of Horween and tour their hundred year old tannery facilities. They assured us that our leather is right on schedule, which means that we should be receiving it around the end of October. This will put us right on track for our projected mid/late November ship dates for the Cognac pieces.

We will be in contact with pre-order customers as soon as we have firmer shipping dates.

When Darrin from Pact told me he had developed a way of making fine leather goods without using glue or thread, I was hesitant to believe such a claim. “Yeah right, that leather will soften up and the whole thing comes apart in a year. Just wait.” That’s what I thought then on the phone, but not anymore.

I am excited today to tell you all about a project I’ve been working on for the better part of this year! It’s called PACT.

My friend Darrin and I have formed a partnership centered around great design and built upon a highly principled foundation. Our first collection of products has been over 5 years in the making and reflects an uncommon refinement, a deep respect for the material, and an ethos of minimalism and simplicity that goes deep.

We have decided to pre-sell our initial collection via Kickstarter, so that we can acquire the specialized equipment necessary to produce it.

Specifically, we need lasers.

Because these pieces are pushing the edges of modern leather-craft in ways that no one else is doing, they require extreme precision to produce. You see, all five pieces in the collection are made using nothing but leather. No buckles, no clasps, no rivets or snaps. No stitching and no glue. Just leather—the best we can find, cut to sub-millimeter tolerances, and then carefully woven and folded together by hand to create fully integral cases.

We’re really proud of these and I would be honored if you’d give them a look over on Kickstarter.

Like any crowdfunding campaign, it’s critical that we get it in front of as many people as possible, especially in the early days. I normally steer clear of Kickstarter submissions; especially wallets, however this one is different. This companies method for crafting products can only be described as origami with leather, reducing material waste and creating quality products. Kudos. Find out more below. Funding starts tomorrow.
