I don't buy that Will is meant to have a crush on Nikki because it very much just reads like friendship and Will looking up to her and admiring her BUT one of the things I think all of the people freaking out about them forcing Will to have a crush on a girl and how T85 "erased his sexuality" miss is that Will having a crush on Nikki specifically in the time period right after s2 could be genuinely interesting!!

I think there's something to explore in the idea of Will developing a crush specifically on a gender non-conforming, masculine-presenting, alternative girl!!! why would he gravitate towards her over other girls in his class? why might developing a crush on Nikki feel safer for him? how might he confuse the feeling of admiring Nikki and envying her confidence and ability to stand up for herself with having a crush on her?

like I think it would be so interesting if Will reads his own admiration towards Nikki as a crush and thinks like he's feeling the same thing other boys his age feel for girls, only to have to work through it later that that's not at all what he was feeling, and if anything, he wanted to BE like her more than he wanted to be with her.

like not only is it silly to freak out over Will just having a friendship with a girl (as if friendships between boys and girls can ONLY be romantic, come on, let's not be so reductive), but you're also acting like the only journey in realizing you're queer is knowing it your whole life and never questioning it and there's nothing more complicated that can be explored there

I really hope the people hating aren't directing that hate at the cast or the production because this was in the works way before season 5, and everyone who worked on it should be appreciated! I understand that since the finale everyone has been disappointed, but I honestly think this was the perfect animated series they could have explored. the timing is just wild lol

might be shooting myself in the foot with this one but imo tales of '85 does NOT mischaracterise mike and will's relationship. I see people upset on the internet at the scene of mike yelling at will for pulling the fire alarm, while ignoring his infamous terrible friend™ line in season 3 (it's not my fault you don't like girls!) or in season 4 where he completely disregards will's disappointment at him not reaching out more.

we've seen him yell at will before, guys. it doesn't mean he hates him...it just means he's a flawed character. and he gets called out for mistreating will by nikki in this same episode lmao

this doesn't take away from the fact that mike DOES care about will!!!

I know shrek is the closest we have, but let me introduce you to mortal engines. the female lead, hester, has a defining scar spanning half her face. she's also ruthless and violent. I know this doesn't even come close to the monster male variants (take the beast in beauty and the beast) but to my knowledge, it is the only piece of media I've encountered where the female lead is objectively described as undesirable. not in a shallow, pick-me manner, but in terms of both physical appearance and personality.

and tom falls in love with her anyway :))

stories with characters that have well written redemption arcs (where they don't die after one redeeming act) will always be dear to me. 

something about a character who is guilty, and feels shame, and has to learn to live with it until they die. better yet, a character who rises out of a cycle of self-flagellation to accept forgiveness and actually start living like a better person; spurred on by the desire to make up for their mistakes, yet not crippled by guilt.
