fic series rec! FMA x HP crossover that I can only describe as an epic - 330K and counting

Summary: Edward gets accidentally summoned by Death Eaters, and neither party is happy.

Comments: Y'ALL. This fic series isn't finished yet, but I have to share it because of how addictive it was to read. I read this over the holidays and found myself sneaking away during Christmas dinner, staying up late, swiping past Spotify holiday playlists to blast Edward Elric ones, tabbing at least 50 FMA fics I'm still making my way through. I'd roll over to talk to my sister, talking about the crazy stuff going on in these stories, and she just roll her eyes at me.

The concept is that yes, Edward gets summoned by Death Eaters due to his Xerxian blood. He escapes pretty early but then finds himself in a very precarious position thanks to the Order hiding him with Flamel. But it sorta backfires - he now has a paper trail that legitimizes him in Magical London and the Death Eaters want to recruit him without knowing he's the guy they summoned because hey, Flamel's assistant should know how to make the Stone, yeah?

Things get very complicated very fast - Ed trying to stay safe and balance identities from both sides of the war, trying not to get involved as he figures out how to get home, and convincing everyone that despite having gold eyes he's not a werewolf thank you very much. And while the noose tightens around Ed, he sees many of the Slytherins at Hogwarts in the same boat - not wanting to be involved with Voldemort, but feeling they have no choice. And so he helps, Gods he helps, and Ed starts this downward slide as Draco's assistant because he wants to help a friend live, even as he hates what's he's doing, as he imagines Mustang's political lessons, as Truth tells him he has a time-limit to get home and that there's a bigger problem than Voldemort back home - Father is the bigger risk.

There is SO MUCH here and it's all amazing. Great characterization. Great worldbuilding. A fantastic character arc for every single character (primarily Ed, Draco, and other Slyterians). This is Ed doing anything he can for those he cares about - even if it's going to Hell.

Why is Vergil so cold to Dante in DMC3? 

Well, I got my own headcanon for it.

In the Devil May Cry novel, there's Gilver—a fake copy of Vergil created by Mundus. Gilver gets up to no good, messes with Dante and eventually tries to kill him.

That got me thinking... What if Mundus played the same cruel trick on Vergil? What if he made a fake copy of Dante?

At some point after the Sparda manor fire, a young, traumatized Vergil finds his 'little brother' alive and well. After losing everything, Vergil is overcome with relief. He doesn't care about their past bickering, he's just happy to hold onto the only family he has left. So they become inseparable.

Vergil gets to be an older brother again and becomes fiercely protective of 'Dante', always looking out for him. He opens up, lowers his guard and cares for him in a way he would for no other.

Vergil trusts him. And it makes it all the easier to drive a dagger into his back.

When demon attacks get more frequent and aggressive, Vergil doesn't think twice. It makes sense, the twins are together so the demon scum don't have to split up their efforts to pursue them. He has no idea he's being tracked from the inside.

Eventually, the trap is sprung.

The 'Dante' he has bled for, fought for, and loved with everything he had left turns its blade on him. All that warmth Vergil allowed himself to feel is turned to ash. He is forced to fight his way out of the ambush and kill his brother's mimic.

After the dust settles, Vergil—bleeding, broken and completely hollowed out—gently slides the clone's empty eyes shut.
