A lazy summary of my method of making the paintie bases transparent like Aywas bases. Takes <10 seconds once you get the hang of it.
hi, I made a chicken out of the raptor base.
I really like chickens.
MELL’S FIXING UP TEMPLATES AGAIN.
These are just the first five of the templates that I’ve set up for ease of use. They are available for download in the bold link above, just go through the folders to find what you’re after. All files are high-res PSDs that are elements safe, expanded out into color areas so that it’s easy, say, to color JUST the critter’s eyes, or horns, or fluffy ruff. You’re free to edit the files however you want to make it easier for you to use, and color to your heart’s content.
TO USE:
Color your critter in the layer named Colors and any/all of the layers grouped above it.
Change the colors of the two Tint layers until your colors are lush and lovely.
If you want, change the colors of the two Highlight layers until your colors glow and glisten.
Before saving, collapse all the Colors layers down to one and clip it down over the Base layer (over the tint layers).
Turn off the Background layer and save as a PNG to save with a transparent background.
Original bases are all by @kiwiggle for @furvilla! More are on the way. If there are any species/costumes you really want to see/have let me know and they’ll get priority.
So I asked matthewfurvilla (the Dev) If I had permission to create a video tutorial for the coloring of the furvilla bases as a few people were expressing confusion over the layout of the written base :D
seems my go-to-design is this rottie-like one .w.
It’s midnight, imma go sleep now.
Quick ‘Cheat’ Guide to Painties
AKA how to turn that grayscale PNG into a layered PSD for those used to working with Aywas-style bases.
For those of you having issues with the ‘overlay colors on grayscale’, I found an easy way (on SAI) to turn the grayscale into a layered PSD like the ones Aywas uses.
Open your grayscale image in SAI, duplicate the layers 3 times (so you have 4 total).
Set the first (topmost) layer to luminance, lower opacity to 30%.
Set the second layer to overlay, lower opacity to 50%.
Select the third layer, go to the Layer menu and click on “Luminance to Transparency” and set the mode to multiply. (This option basically turns white into transparent, and grayscales as semi-transparent depending on how dark it is! This trick works to rescue lineart you’ve merged to a white BG layer or even to eliminate the white BG of a scanned black and white image, btw.)
Lock layer 3′s transparency and you can now color this layer to whatever color you want your shadows to be.
The final (lowest) layer you lock as well, and just block-color it your base color. You can now create layers above this, clip them to the base and start adding markings.
Make sure to clip all three layers to the base to avoid glowy/white pixels around the edges when you save.
This is what the basic setup looks like when you’re done.
The lumi layer gives you the highlights (adjust opacity of this layer for brighter/duller highligts), the overlay/multiply gives you your shadows. For many you will still want to add another overlay/lumi layer for extra highlights and shines (like eye shines and metal gleams) but this setup does most of the work for basic painties. Here’s what the above setup looks, I added some different color spots so you can see how the shading behaves:
As for actual edits to the base, you can add them as you would any edit on an Aywas file, with the one difference… you want to duplicate your lineart layer and merge it to your base so your base goes all the way to the edge, then set your lineart to multiply, and/or merge with your shading to achieve that ‘almost lineless’ look that the Furvilla art style has.
I do recall Photoshop has a trick to ‘deleting’ the white from a layer to duplicate this tutorial on it, but I haven’t done it in a while and it’s not quite as straightforward as in SAI. But it IS doable.
free to use seal base!
click on the image to be taken to the full-size version. if your theme does not support that, click here.
rules:
please credit me in your villager’s description with a link to my furvilla profile
you can make other people painties using this base, but please don’t do it in exchange for anything (no money, items, etc.), i don’t want money to be made off of my base
please don’t take parts of this base (eyes, muzzle, tail, etc.) and use it in another paintie/artwork
edits are fine (changing expression, putting clothes on it, etc.) just make sure it still is recognizably my base
not a must, but if anyone uses it, i’d love to see it! send me a link on furvilla and i’ll be sure to check out your painties! :-)
I CAN’T BELIEVE I JUST DID THIS
DODO BASE
free to use with credit and with a link to show me
since the official bases for the galaxy painties haven’t been updated to have eyes I’ve made some adjustments!
these modified bases are all free to use, provided a little credit goes my way either on here or at furvilla under the same name
A fat snail villager base I made for Furvilla! It’s pretty unlikely we’ll ever get a snail species, so I filled in the gap. :] Drawn by hand and not based on any specific species, so you can only make it with a Shifty.
It’s free to use and colors up pretty nicely. By default, it has some blank space above the head so that when you size it down to 400 it’s shorter than regular villagers. You can crop that out and make a big snail if you want though. Rules:
1) Credit me! Either my Furvilla account or my this art tumblr work. 2) No selling painties/commissions on the base for real cash… only furvilla dollars and furvilla cash. Sorry! Also, again, be sure to credit me and do not present the base itself as your own work. 3) Optional, but I’d love to see any design you make with it. 4) That’s it, those are the only rules.
I made very important pembroke and cardigan corgi bases. Free to use!
Credit @Ruby on Furvilla for the base please ^^
OKAY SO LIKE;;;; TWO BLOODY HOURS LATER I FINISH THIS
shaved dragon! jic anyone out there wanted a dragon sans the fluff, teya’s gotchu covered!
if you use, please credit me @teaunicorn, thank you! now time to finish apollo’s paintie, my god.
A database of free-to-use edited bases, arranged and posted to the forums by takaia; some of these bases are ones I haven’t reblogged here.
I edited the Furvilla cat base into an Oriental Shorthair. Feel free to use it or edit it how you want, just credit Mooeena in your description.
so if u made a paintie that was just a pile of rats forming the shape of the base villager would it get accepted
not that i have the skill to make it myself but i genuinely want to know
Do you want to try a different method of executing painties? Take a gander at my tutorial! You may find this coloring style better for your own needs, or maybe just learn something about photoshop you didn’t know before.

Official Painties Base Folder
On twitter, the devs have put up a link to a googledrive folder filled with every base, including costume bases. Just putting it out there for those who want an easy quick link to all the current bases in the game. Any new ones will no doubt be added to this page.
