Please do! Corporations are the biggest criminals of climate change, environmental damage and pollution. Capitalism is rooted in destruction.
My friend asked how I learned to cook and the answer is I didn't. I know like 5 things about cooking and they are:
Always use more garlic than the recipe calls for
"Ehhh fuck it close enough" is a great measurement tool
Find like 5 recipes that you like, adjust them how you like them, make them until you hate them
Clean as you go
If a recipe is from a mommy blog, you will need more spices
If anyone wants to add, please do
None of these are wrong.
i’ve only seen like the vaguest hints of this discourse happening but, i guess that white westerners have been getting outraged (again) that other cultures have different understandings of which animals are acceptable to eat and which are not? how stupid, i guess this website’s predominant userbase continues to be culturally rooted in the american and western european suburb and that’s why we have to content with these dumb ethnonationalist takes over and over
i’m an extremely westernized person as a white chilean mestiza and i actually was like “what?” when i discovered that white americans and british people consider it a cultural outrage to eat horse meat (a common snack in my country of origin!), and that’s still like, a big mammal you find often in farms in the western world, and yet many people in these countries are surprised some people will be like “maybe we can use this animal for its meat”. i’d say “this is so fucking weird” but also to my understanding white american culture thoroughly rejects the eating of offal which is actually even more fucking weird to me.
i think what people who state that ‘violence in media is a macho power fantasy’ don’t understand is that there are two groups inclined to violence: those who have all the power (even if they think they don’t) and those who have none at all, leaving a complacent center.
see: liberal media reaction to joker, reactions to transfeminine people making non-actionable threats against active and conscious proponents of a system that leaves us vulnerable to sexual and/or lethal violence, the fetishisation of vulnerability by those with the social capital to dispose of people, etc
Omg, it’s the Equality House!
Like, this house is a beautiful big fuck you to homophobes, specifically the West Boro Baptist Church. Why?
It’s literally across the street from them.
It was bought, on purpose. Painted in rainbow, on purpose. How was it paid? By Aaron Jackson’s Planting Peace foundation.
They have hosted lemonade stands for LGBT fundraisers, had gay wedding ceremonies, etc. They are naturally targeted with anti-LGBT graffiti and worse but so far didn’t give a fuck.
BONUS:
They have a glorious next-door neighbor btw: Transgender House
How did that happen? Once per year, equality house gets painted in transexual colors for a week. One special person saw that and desired a permanent one.
An 8 year old trans girl did a fundraiser (online as well as with a local lemonade stand). And as we can see: the community agreed with her.
I’m op and I stole this meme from a friend for notes but this is actually super cool thank you
“A daffodil bulb will divide and redivide endlessly. That’s why, like the peony, it is one of the few flowers you can find around abandoned farmhouses, still blooming and increasing in numbers fifty years after the farmer and his wife have moved to heaven, or the other place, Boca Raton. If you dig up a clump when no one is nearby and there is no danger of being shot, you’ll find that there are scores of little bulbs in each clump, the progeny of a dozen or so planted by the farmer’s wife in 1942. If you take these home, separate them, and plant them in your own yard, within a couple of years, you’ll have a hundred daffodils for the mere price of a trespassing fine or imprisonment or both. I had this adventure once, and I consider it one of the great cheap thrills of my gardening career. I am not advocating trespassing, especially on my property, but there is no law against having a shovel in the trunk of your car.”

“A friend once shared what she called the Parable of the Choir: A choir can sing a beautiful note impossibly long because singers can individually drop out to breathe as necessary and the note goes on.
“Social justice activism should be like that, she said.
“That’s stuck with me.”

It really doesn’t escape my notice that wider cultures on tumblr have started to skew significantly more conservative, sex-negative, and generally puritanical since all the sex worker blogs & support networks got run off.
I’m a cis-gender man which basically means that, when I was born, the doctor went “It’s a boy!” and when I was old enough to understand I agreed with him.
The thing is, I don’t know why I feel like a man. I was teased and bullied for it a lot when I was little. I’ve never had stereotypically American male interests. I never cared about sports or cars or guns. I was more interested in music and cooking and the arts. I’ve always been emotionally in tune and sensitive, even when I did my best to suppress my emotions to survive a childhood of abuse from other children.
It’s not physical either. I don’t feel like a man because I have a penis or a beard. If you put my brain in a robot body or any other body, my essence would still feel male (I assume). I literally can’t imagine what being any other gender would feel like, since I feel so acutely male.
I think that’s why the concept of being transgender always made sense to me. I’m a man. I don’t have any bloody clue why I feel like a man, but I don’t feel that it’s tied to my body or my interests or the way that I’ve been treated. I feel like a man because of something beyond that. Something ephemeral. So, why couldn’t others feel the same? Why couldn’t a person who’s been misidentified as a girl feel like a boy for the exact same nebulous reasons that I do?
And, since gender really doesn’t make any sense to me anyway, why couldn’t there also be people who feel as if they don’t have one? Or who flow across genders like a ship on a map?
Are there people out there whose sense of their own gender is inseparable from their physical form? If you put those people into robot bodies or, simply, other physically different bodies, would their gender identity also swap? If so, why? Are they actually more lost in their gender identity than I am and they need to hone in on the physical in order to anchor themselves?
Why do people feel like they are the gender that they are?
This is very soul filling to read. Thank you

I want to preface this with saying I am pro-vaccine. I think anti-vaxxers are dangerous and harmful.
However
White people really need to watch how you approach Indigenous & Black people who happen to be anti-vaccine. Indigenous & Black communities have a long history of being harmed by people in the medical field, and that continues today. Indigenous women have been forcibly sterilized as recently as 2018- and that’s just what made the news, it doesn’t include all the every day aggressions from medical professionals, hospital staff, etc.
We have reasons to mistrust westernized medicine. Focus on your own community.
Y'all I love my union

So, I looked in the comments, expecting to see discourse or historical background etc, but I found none. Therefore, I decided to learn more and add background. Apparently this machine was used because of polio because polio paralyzes your lungs. According to the wiki article on this bad boy, patients would spend two weeks in there sometimes. They still have these machines, though much, much more modern but they’re barely used at all anymore: “In 1959, there were 1,200 people using tank respirators in the United States, but by 2004 there were only 39. By 2014, there were only 10 people left with an iron lung.” (x)
I’ve read about one man who still lives in an iron lung. He taught himself how to breathe again by gulping down air, but it’s quite laborious because of the paralysis. His name is Paul Alexander, and he’s a lawyer. He’s 71 years old and has spent 65 years in an iron lung. Wild, right? He’s been working on a memoir that he was inspired to write by the recent resurgence of cases of polio caused by anti-vaccers.

It’s amazing to me to recognize that we only defeated polio in this past century - that my mother’s father had it (he got lucky, it only deformed his feet and thereby kept him out of a couple wars); my mother got the big vaccination that left her upper arm scarred; and by the time I was vaccinated, polio basically didn’t exist. My grandfather must have been born like around 1900, so - in the space of less than 75 years, this was no longer something that parents dreaded the possibility of every summer.
In the 1950s, my mother would go to the corner shop. The owners had a daughter a few years older than my mum. She lived in an iron lung in the back of the shop. Vaccinate your fucking kids.
