#ahh what an incredible post #i have seen many ways to interpret hornet out there. out of the ones i believe i really like her being a 'better' him #a pale being shaped by the 'old hearts' of hallownest #who has had the opportunity to live through experiences that have taught her how to succeed in scenarios where he came up short.#experiences and circumstances that have shaped her beyond the traits he passed onto her.#like not falling apart overwhelmed by despair and shame once she dooms pharloom with her mistake #and putting herself on the line trying to fix things instead of mentally doubling down and fleeing..#she can follow on his footsteps: she can threaten a land's main god. she can make the common bugs' wishes a reality.#she can tinker and engineer. she can kill vessels to test their capacity. she can live out his philosophy of rising beyond nature.#but she goes further than that. i feel like the framing of wl proposing to double down with his plan meanwhile hornet proposes to go beyond #is rly important here. just like how she recognizes herself as a child of hallownest. of the tragedy. just as she tries preventing another.#only when she's able to re-examine her life's tragedy through her stay in pharloom. what must be fought against. what is worth saving..#when she manages to empathize with the motives of those that desperately tried saving it (wl's memory).. is that she can rise above it.#is that she can manage to stare at the void as it stares back and not fear it. it's what gets the void to help her.#aoughh sorry for such a long post she's such a beautiful character to me. she's what lives on. she makes her memories her strength <3

it's been so hot lately... the perfect weather for drawing a character taking a dip in some cool water. I like to think that Hornet found peaceful moments like this while on her adventure... but only a moment; she never gets to relax for long.

Unlike Ghost, who retreats to the void in ball form, The Hollow Knight's shade seemingly gets obliterated by the burst of light emited by the Radiance upon receiving the final hit

(Notice also how THK alone is blurry)

The Hollow Knight not being on Sister of the Void can easily be explained away by "camera angle" and "TC wanted it vague"

But honestly? I think THK's shade doesn't even survive Dream No More in the first place

This aligns with the regular endings having it explode entirely, leaving no shade or even shell behind

#ooo omgg i never noticed that #the answer to which hk ending is 'the true one' is left intentionally ambiguous by tc. personally i like my hk with dream no more #so this is interesting to me. i was always more on the side of 'its shell did not survive the confrontation' but its shade also didn't!!#i kinda prefer it this way for canon.. makes hornet's motivations for getting so involved in pharloom more poignant.#she could not save anyone from her og tragedy. she could not save the og hk. so she attempts to do so with the hk of pharloom #her attempt at freeing lace is met by the one who freed the pv (ghost). i always thought of it as them reaching a 'role' understanding #hornet is now trying to act like ghost. the vessels - representations of the og tragedy - see this and support her

i’ve been playing a lot of hollow knight recently … :}

thinking about how the vessels have no voice to cry suffering but they certainly do experience physical distress... ghost flailing around when they fall into acid, hyperventilating (?) when they're one hit away from breaking their shell.. their vision narrowing, the pure vessel staggers and it reaching a point it cannot get back up...

when the only indicators of dangerous exertion are in the body language of a mindless creature that will oblige no matter its state, those that train the hollow knight would need to become experts in catching these signs.. if the knights ever trained it, did they become such? did the king eventually grow attuned to the endurance threshold of a creature he denied it a voice to alert him with? Could it have become second nature? or could have they invented their own methods and norms of communicating with the vessel further than just commands (maybe in necessary scenarios, like something unknown making it impossible for the vessel to follow an order), much similar to how we find ways of communicating with other beings despite barriers? much to think about im afraid

#pure vessel #hk #hollow knight #thk #pale king #five knights hk #i think about the pure vessel's upbringing as a non-verbal and impassive creature (child) way too much i fear #how the limitations imposed on it (through nature and nurture) for the sake of denying it a substantial personhood #actually end up giving it an unique and notable identity. and how such thing would change others in charge of it #the abscense of (x) is still a type of expression. and thk's condition would make it in need of special attention #sometimes not too different to how one raises a child taking on account their particularities..#(I've always thought that thk's upbringing goes back and forth from being nothing like raising a child to sometimes way too similar to it)#how there could be a learning curve to instructing the pv. like knowing the level of detail it needs to execute an order well..#knowing it needs to rest. knowing IF it's actually resting. knowing how much it can do and how much it can take. learning to think like it.#.. and growing the thick skin required to stomach its unnerving nature and the cruelty of its existence
