i think another thing missing in this "it's literally incest" shipping discourse, in all fandoms, is how often specifically gay and lesbian content has historically been cloaked in "like sisters/like brothers", "like family," sworn brothers and all that. that is a way that gay content has been snuck past censors, and occasionally a way gay content has been censored (see: sailor moon dub). saying that all these close relationships described as "familial" in fiction are familial, period, with no nuance and with the full force of a real-life blood sibling relationship, is ahistorical and goofy

and I've noticed that this sort of moral panic over "this thing that I've deemed incest-adjacent is a proship!" is disproportionately affecting gay ships... because many people, even ostensibly queer folks, see any non-blood-related close relationship between a man/boy and woman/girl as romantic by default, and any non-blood-related close relationship between men/boys or women/girls as familial by default

like, it icks me when people say a gay ship in fiction that is unrelated to each other is "incest because they're like family / like brothers / found family", because my wife and I have been told we're "like sisters" so many times by str8 people - living as gay out in the world, that happens! people will say you "just seem so close, like siblings" and it's admittedly obnoxious, but even when you correct them "that is actually my wife" they'll persist in it. you should not always take a relationship that, to you, "seems familial" at face value

Both Catra and Adora defying death at the height of their character journeys in such a powerful and subversive way. Whenever I think about it deeper, both deaths were very traditional and demeaning ’feminine’ deaths. Catra had a man literally controlling her body and mouth to fight against her friend (and lover) for seemingly his own amusement, and when she resisted, he disposed of her by throwing her off a cliff (the gwen stacy method), she was barely present in the entirety of the episode, her agency stripped (not for the first time), the emotional stakes were felt, but by Adora not catra and how bad she felt to see catra this hurt, even though catra was the one in pain, we don’t focus on catra’s perspective at all during it, so if she did die at the end of it, she would have just been another name to add to the list of female love interest violated and killed by the hand of men for the development of the main character’s story. Except she didn’t die! that wasn’t her end, but her beginning, that part was just a step on the rest of her life that she grew and recovered enough to have power to control. To change.

As for Adora, there’s no shortage of self sacrificial women and female martyrs both in history or fiction, it’s been romanticised and encouraged since the dawn of the patriarchy for girls to grew up being conditioned into giving up their own needs, desires and even lives and health for the convenience and goals of others, and when they obey that to the extreme (like with the failsafe) they’re celebrated as the ultimate heroes. The perfect women are dead women after all. but instead Adora doesn’t die not just because of her power or sense of duty but because she learns to be selfish and choose something for herself for once and that’s what ultimately saves her. She rejects her conditioning and the message of what a hero must be and choose to live for her own self. Self love is radical.

one thing that this spop rewatch is really opening my eyes on is how hypocritical the Catra redemption discourse was back when the show was still airing. i could make a compilation of all the times Scorpia tries to murder someone in the Rebellion or Entrapta disregards basic morals to uphold her partnership with the Horde and yet they get passes in regards to their redemption while people complain about Catra not “deserving it”. and like, it’s literally only because Scorpia and Entrapta are nicer than Catra. if Catra wasn’t a huge bitch no one would be saying her redemption was rushed or undeserved. people care far more about personality than they do about actions.

Where do personality and actions separate, though? This is an interesting framing of it, but I think the difference is how Catra treats the people she actually knows. It's a lot easier for people to pass off "oh, they treated someone in their outgroup badly" than it is to pass off "oh, they treated someone in their ingroup badly". Is that personality? Or is that just another flavor of actions?

That's where the difference between Adora and the other folks in her squad comes through, but also a bit of a parallel between Adora and Entrapta. Adora immediately recognizes "oh, this outgroup is also people". So does Entrapta, just in a different direction. Whereas Catra's ingroup association is so much more limited, so much harder to build, and she lashes out at the failure to respect it towards her. That's not to say that I'm not sympathetic with Catra's arc. But I can see why people have a harder time with ingroup wrongs than outgroup wrongs

Catra was a huge bitch, and that means she was a bitch to everyone around her, including her allies. for whatever reason certain people put “being mean to your buddies” over “literally trying to kill people and collaborating with a dictatorship” in terms of irredeemable actions. i think those people are ridiculous and i don’t particularly care about their opinions tbh.
