Amanda couldn’t help her crying and sniffling, the last thing she’d realize is that the neighbors a yard over could hear her crying, or at least one of the kids at least. She sat on the bench sitting in her backyard, leaning over, hugging her jacket. Although she didn’t know her mother for long, her father told her all about how she wouldn’t go a day without the jacket.

At the voice she looked up, rubbing tears with the back of her hand. It was one of Joseph’s kids, they still were creepy even as they were older.

“Oh quiet kid, it’s a free country.” She usually wasn’t rude, but this wasn’t a time that she’d get back up like nothing happened. “Go pray in a basement if I’m so loud.”

Resting his chin on the top of the fence, Chris found no surprise in Amanda’s response except that it came from Amanda. He hadn’t exactly spent much time with the girl before she started going to college so his impression of her was based off those brief interactions. From his memory of her, she was dully positive but refreshingly honest. The harsh quip he was shot broke that persona he had and kindled an interest in her. He admired her backbone.

“…I was joking.” He assured her in a soft voice. His eyes strayed away from her shyly before admitting, “I wanted to ask what you like on your burrito?” He said before glancing back curiously.

“I..” She began, staring down after looking at the boy for a few moments. “I’m sorry. I just been stressed.” Amanda frowned, sighing. Around the neighborhood, the young woman was always known to be sarcastic and bubbly, but the way she responded made her seem like that part broke after college.

“--Sure, a burrito sounds nice.” Giving a nod, her frown slowly turned into a smile at the offer of one of her favorite foods. It was still so weird how in time, one of Joseph’s kids was now older and .. not so creepy. “Again, I apologize for snapping at you.”
