Wig Styling: Working with Foam pt 3 - Wrapping Flat Objects and The Wonders of Clear Glue
Wow I sure did forget to post this in a timely manner! This is the third part of our guide to working with wigs and foam, and lately itâs been my favorite! This is a great method to use on wigs like Ivysaur, which require a lot of clean, flat-ish shapes.  While I could technically use the hot glue wrapping technique covered in part 2, this is a bad choice for a number of reasons.  First, the edges of my object are not hidden, which means Iâd have a big, visible hot glue mess at the edge of my weft.  Second, itâs difficult to keep hair taut on a flat or gently curved object, so Iâd have a hard time keeping the tension up while gluing the hair down.  And third, this method is just plain nicer looking.
Instead I used 100% tacky glue on this wig.  I recommend this method whenever possible because it is VERY clean, very secure, and mistakes are easily fixed.  This is a difficult method to use on a bun or round object because youâre fighting against gravity, but you could always use tacky glue after hot gluing down your edges. Instructions under the cut:

When I was 17 my appendix ruptured because I thought I was just having period cramps and didnât go to the hospital so donât tell me PMS symptoms are no big deal
this actually happened to me during my math final and i didnât think anything of it and when i was later admitted to the hospital my math prof was asking me âyou didnât have to take the final! why didnât you tell me it hurt?!?!â and i told him iâve had cramps worse.
he gave me 100
This is actually an extremely common occurrence simply because in sex ed they donât teach you how to tell the difference between menstrual cramps and other more serious pains. The way to tell the difference between cramps and appendicitis is that while menstrual cramps are generalized toward the middle of the stomach below the belly button, pain from a swollen or burst appendix will start in the middle of the stomach and relocate to only the lower right side, even lower than menstrual cramps, and is a very localized pain. It also comes on extremely suddenly and will worsen over time or when you make a sudden movement, like a cough or a sneeze.
Basically, if youâre feeling any sort of pain, even if itâs menstrual cramps, donât hesitate to tell the school nurse or a parent, or if youâre out of school and home even make a doctorâs appointment. Chances are if your cramps are that bad thereâs something they can do to improve that as well.
I am boosting the shit out of that reply, because I am twenty-fucking-five years old and did not know how to tell the two pains apart
Adding another diagnostic tool! This is something we use in the ER called the rebound test. Basically, appendicitis and cramps react differently to certain things. If youâre still not sure if you have cramps or appendicitis, take two fingers and press them into your abdomen where the pain is (try repeating this on the lower right quadrant of the abdomen just to be sure.)
When you press in firmly, it will probably hurt. Hereâs the test: LET GO. Does it get better or get worse? Appendicitis will immediately hurt worse when you let go. Cramps will not. Go to the ER if the rebound test makes it worse!
THE REBOUND TEST IS REALLY IMPORTANT.
My husband got sent home from the ER with a rupturing appendix. When he came back and was rushed into surgery, the surgeon was super angry â âWhy didnât anyone do the rebound test?!â
All great info, but there is another lesson to be learned here: if youâre in major pain, itâs probably important - so donât let anyone tell you itâs not. There is a documented pattern of women who go to the ER with complaints of pain being dismissed as overreactingâŚwhen in reality women have an incredibly high tolerance for pain, to the point that some donât even realize exactly how serious their condition is. These stories only serve to illustrate this point.

Every time I see this..
OK this may sound odd but what fabric shops would you recommend in the LA area. I know you no longer live here but any advice helps, since joanns does have its limits in fabric options and in your experience is it any cheaper than Joanns or am I paying just as much?
The garmet district is what you want to do.Â
Shopping in LA Fabric District
What you want to do is â HIT UP MICHAEL LEVINES FIRST BUT DONT BUY ANYTHING. Maybe pick up your pattern. Check out how much fabric you need according to the pattern, etc etc. Search the store for the fabric you need, even if you see a perfect match, leave it, donât buy it. Trust meeeee. Youâre basically making this your garaunteed last resort. I know it already seems a great deal compared to Joannsâ money grubbing prices, but trust me.Head out to the streets and start walking up and down 9th. From Maple to San Pedro. CHECK EVERYWHERE. North shops usually have the best SPANDEX and stretch fabrics, lace and sequins. SOUTH shops usually have upholestry, leather and vinyl (thereâs exceptions but this is what I noticed.)Â
I garauntee you any stock of fabric at Levines is avaliable in all the surrounding stores and they will sell it way short for a bargain!Â
PROTIP: Never say yes first. If you ask one of the workers in the off stores âHow much is this a yard?â and they say â12,â even if thats an amazing price, still just nod and say âThanksâ and start walking away like you dont want it. They WILL ALWAYS go lower. Theyâll start telling you â11! 10â 8 for you!â Especially if they know you want 2-3 yrds or more.  But donât get intimidated either, theyâll try to corner you into saying yes. Just wave them off, tell them âIll take a picture and come back? I just wanna compare.â  Seriously, even if you see the perfect one at one of these places for the best price, just wait until you hit all the stores. You have no idea how many times i bought something and regretted it 5 minutes later when I saw an even better version.Â
Second Protip: When they ask you how many yard you want, always say 2-3. Even if you need seven. Because theyâll give it to you for cheaper if you only want that much. Then when you say, okay, ill buy it for 4 bucks a yard, as heâs measuring it out, then say âACTUALLY can I get 5?âÂ
Hereâs some of my favorites:L.A. Alex has the CHEAPEST notions. Zippers, elastic, velcros, thread, muslin, etc. They are AWESOME for all extra stuff you need. Way cheap.Â
JOURNAL has some of the most interesting fabric on the block, unique textiles like dancewear or lace, usually exclusive to them. This is where I found that rare ass pre-pleated suede fabric for Kylo Renâs sleeves and the awesome shimmer-non-sparkle spandex for Miraculous Ladybug. .99 Fabric a yard. Literally as it says. 99cents a yard biittcchhh. I ALWAYS hit this place up because you always need cheap ass broadcloth, poplin, CHIFFON or Taffeta. Heâs got it all man. Its awesome for basic shit. City Fabric has the best FUR and FLEECE selection youâve ever seen. Mora Tex is a favorite of mine. The guy here loves cosplayers and the fabric I get here is always rich and stunning looking. I bought my Astrologian Velvet, Dishonored purple and grey suede. Kyloâs outer tunic, Reyâs tunic and shoe wool, Lavellanâs trespasser tunic, and so much NICE suiting. Basically any heavier, richer type fabrics you can probably find here. Trim 2000 Plus is the place I found my Inquistor buttons. This place is like a gold mine for buttons. They have the most interesting shit for super cheap. I spent like 5 bucks on both Emily and Corvos diamond cufflinks and royal button getup here.
Jerryâs all Trims. My favorite trim store!!! Â He has everything! Belts too! Great for any trims, tassles, or piping you made need. AND HE LETS YOU BUY THE WHOLE ROLL OR BY YARD. I bought all the leather cord here for our Solas necklaces. And every gold piece of my Astrologian cosplay.
SOME TECHNICAL ISSUES:
-Parking in LA FABRICÂ district is hell on earth. The spots up by Jerryâs All trims is my secret spot, those are usually free (2 hr maximum). You can check side spots too, like between maple and san pedro, but donât feel bad about pulling into a parking structure and paying the 7 bucks. Its not so bad.Â
-Stores close around 6:00 on weekdays and saturdays.Â
-WHILE PARKING IS FREE ON SUNDAY. A lot of these shops arenât open. LA Alex and the the button store are closed for example. Button store is also closed mondays for some reason? AND EVERYTHING CLOSES BY 4 ON SUNDAY.Â
-AWAYS bring cash. Lots of stores donât take card. Or they will charge you extra for using it. There are ATMs inside some stores. But the service fee is like 3-5 bucks. YUCK.Â
-Theres a random costume shop on 9th street that sells gloves. SKIP THIS. I know your tempted to buy everything at once, but this guy is way overpriced. Order your gloves on ebay for $1, trust me.Â
-Best time to go is in the morning on a weekday, if you can manage it. Saturdays are hecka busy but that sometimes it a great thing cause the shops are ready to bargain.
-North of San pedro is NOT A GOOD AREA. Donât park there. And if youâre leaving to go to Little Tokyo afterwards, turn around, take another street.Â
