Bonsai: noun [ mass noun ] the art of growing ornamental, artificially dwarfed varieties of trees and shrubs in pots.
Tranquility and dedication, the two words that I feel best that would describe a bonsai. The art of bonsai practice originated from the mainland China and later on the Japanese adopted the said art, thus becoming a part of their cultural herritage. They did incorporate Zen Buddhism with the said art, and true enough at the sight of one, it will surely clear your mind and calm you down, not only true for the viewer but also for the one caring for it. Practicing the art takes time and one cannot rush the process, since we are all bound by the natural law which means it will take years to shape and grow that bonsai that you have been dreaming of. Slowing down is not bad all as a matter of fact, it makes your mind wonder and be creative.
