MCA PAPER MAKING FINAL
Hello world,
Fall semester of 2012 paper making course at MCA is coming to an end.
The class will be hanging work for their final project at Tsunami resturant in Memphis.
Show dates are December 6- January 2nd.
The opening reception will be on December 6th at 6-8 pm.
Gallery hours are 5:30 pm-10 pm Monday-Saturday.
Come out and support your young local artists!!!
Classes paper sculptures with wire and abaca and some made from the handmade plaster molds with wood pulp and or cotton for casting.
Casting paper with donated molds from ceramics. So exciting!
Deciding which pulp works best.
Some shrink too much, but have the most detail and some that did not shrink, but had the least dteail.
Next week demo on making your own mold for paper casting!

We are beginning to explore handmade paper sculpture. First, we're experimenting with wire armatures and using methyl cellulose to glue wet sheets of pressed abaca to the metal.

Today in (potions, jk) class we learned how to cook dried iris and day lily leaves into fiber for handmade paper! It was cooked for an hour and half or so with soda ash in the former fibers studio.
In the bottom picture Ashley and Kate "smile with their eyes" while wearing the necessary safety gear required by the EPA.
Picking seeds out of cotton, beating it, and checking out the outcome of the process.
Beating 100% cotton fabric.

Pigmenting leftover cotton pink pulp to any neutral color possible.
Loading the drying system with black denim sheets and some with embedding techniques.
