I’m sure by now you’ve heard about Tumblr changing their TOS. None of my posts seem to be flagged by the algorithm changes surprisingly, but I don’t actively post here and have pretty much left Tumblr for Twitter a long time ago. Many artists and users are doing the same currently so if you’d like to keep up with me and my work please follow me on Twitter (@ oceanfruit) instead! Hopefully a solution for an artist friendly website will happen in the new year. Thanks for your support as always and maybe I’ll see you again soon!

Long time no post! Here’s my contribution to the Super Zine Bros! I really enjoyed Asagao Academy and watching the Normal Boots guys play their own perspective routes. Jirard’s route happened to be one of my favorites as well as being one of the first of the Beard Bros series that I ever watched. Would love to do more Asagao fanart sometime!
Greetings Oceanfruit, I really enjoy your art style! I was watching your GameGrumps Animation for "Anybody Can Draw", and it really inspired me. I realize that it is not your audio, but your animation style plus the Grumps um... semi-motivational words really got to me. I've been attempting to learn how to draw for a couple months now, but it has been sort of hit and miss. Is there anywhere you recommend starting/ any material that helped you start your drawing career? I really appreciate it!
Hello! Thank you so much, it makes me really happy when I receive comments like yours. I have to apologize because I don’t know how long ago you might have sent this ask but I hope you’re able to see my reply!I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember but I think one of the things that helped push me to keep doing it for so long was just by drawing stuff I liked. However, drawing outside of your comfort zone is good too! It’s easier to start this way though; you can use the material you enjoy to help you learn the basics like figuring out forms and shapes. I definitely did a lot of reading up on tutorials I found online as well. Keep in mind that tutorials are not meant to be a “Only One Way” method of drawing though-- But they’re a good start to approaching something that may seem totally difficult.Observation and studying helps too! As a kid I would always copy (NOT TRACE) drawings I thought were cool. This is good because it will allow you to think about how the artist made the piece so you can apply that knowledge to your own work. Why did they draw it this way or used certain colors like this? When I went to college my fundamentals of art class had us do what we call Master Copies, where the assignment was to recreate a painting or drawing done by a Renaissance artist. Same concept! If you happen to do this with artists’ works you find online and want to share your copy, remember to give credit where credit is due if you post it.I hope this is helpful to you and any other budding artists!
I got to work on a postcard illustration and a two page spread for @forthebirbs zine. Thanks so much for allowing me to participate, I can’t wait to see everyone’s pieces!!
Hey! If you liked my countdown series for Undertale, I’ve compiled them all into one piece to submit to the Gamers For Good charity art book. I’m not sure if my entry got put into the final layout yet but regardless-- there’s a ton of other amazing artists participating and it’s all for a good cause!

A couple months ago I was graciously given the opportunity to make a Game Grumps animated for the Grumps, which premiered on the channel today! I’ve been anxious for it to debut and now that its here I’m almost shocked. This has been a small dream of mine that I never thought would happen-- But it did and I’m so glad it could be shared with all of you.
If you’re interested about the process of how I made this animation and my other thoughts feel free to keep reading below the cut!
Where do I even begin? Making this was quite a wild ride. After being given the ok to use the clip I selected for the video I started designing some quick concepts and references for myself. My typical art style is... Not something I would want to put anyone through the torture of animating (including myself) so I tried making a design for Dan and Arin that was simple but still appealing. I discovered into the project that even designs as easy as these were still challenging, particularly Dan’s 5 o’clock shadow and Arin’s beard.
Once the designs were done I thumbnailed the entire sequence to get a feel of what I wanted and then spent about two days cleaning them up into boards which I put into an animatic with sound in Adobe Premiere. This helped me figure out the timing for the dialogue which I charted onto X sheets... Like physical pieces of paper with numbers for every frame. This was EXTREMELY helpful to me when animating because the program I used to animate in can not import audio (it’s a free digital animation program called Pencil). Pencil has its limitations, but I like the feel of it for doing the rough animation. Using the X sheets while animating allowed me to sync up the drawings nicely with the sound without actually having to hear it.
”But Shawna, why didn’t just you use an animation program that allows you to do all these steps easily like [insert program here]?”
I have Flash but on top of not having used it in years it also was not allowing me to import audio and it crashed my computer twice. I also tried that free animation program from Studio Ghibli, but it won’t work on my cintiq. I’ve also got a cheap old version of ToonBoom but that also is god awful.
”Then... How did you make the animation?”
So, the TL;DR process of the whole project is:
1. Break down the whole video by scene
2. Rough animate a scene in Pencil using the timing on the X sheet
3. Export EVERY FRAME from Pencil as .pngs (depending on if it was on 1′s or 2′s I would just delete the extras)
4. Import the scene into Adobe Premiere to make sure the sound is intact
5. Take the exported frames into Photoshop. All of them. Every. Single. One. In one file. It’s clean up time
6. Clean the rough key frames and breakdowns
7. Clean up the inbetweens
8. Color
9. Export all the now clean and colored frames again
10. Import them all back into Adobe Premiere with the backgrounds
11. Save the finished scene and import it into the amalgamated video
I had full intention of animating the whole thing in 24 frames per second and while most of it is still in 24fps I cheated a bit on some scenes and held certain body parts. So as you can imagine, there’s a ton of drawings. After having a freak out a little more than halfway through the project I enlisted the help of Laura (@lunatrickla) for clean up on inbetweens and Onsta (@onstamonsta) for coloring. They saved my butt and I can’t thank them enough for offering their assistance.
The backgrounds and the end card were inspired by the concept art of Super Mario Galaxy. I wanted to add that touch of typical GG Animated though so I incorporated the crinkled “paper” texture!
Game Grumps, both the channel and those who are a part of it, make me very happy. I wanted this animated to be special and during production I got the sinking feeling of “Oh no... What if this isn’t actually good? Will anybody laugh at this?” Truth be told, I still have this anxious feeling at the pit of my stomach. However I’ve gotten so much support from friends. To those who knew about me working on this: Thank you for keeping it a secret with me and to those who didn’t, I hope it was a nice surprise!
I’m admittedly not the best animator out there; I know my illustration skills are stronger. When I rewatch it, all I can see are the flaws. But I learned so much from the experience and to have had the chance to be featured among many other hard working animators on one of my favorite Youtube channels is amazing! I’m absolutely starry eyed.
Anybody can draw and anybody can animate. No one comes out the pussy drawing like Mozart right?
Thanks for reading if you did!!
