In Defence of Buttercup

Buttercup’s supposed passiveness is the crux of most critiques of The Princess Bride. But I’d argue that Buttercup acts in her own interests throughout the movie, making moves to secure her own future from her position of powerlessness. For the entirety of the movie barring the first and last scenes, Buttercup is a captive. She has to marry Humperdink in accordance with the law- she has no choice. In this moment we see her at her most passive. She’s accepted that he will marry her regardless of her feelings and she seeks her happiness in other places. Then she gets kidnapped. From that moment to the end of the movie Buttercup gets passed back and forth as the trophy everyone fights over. However, she doesn’t sit idly by. She attempts to escape Vizzini by jumping overboard into eel infested waters. That’s a brave move. She doesn’t know who is on the other ship she swims towards. She only hopes they won’t kill her like Vizzini plans to. Her failure doesn’t negate the bravery of her actions. Then she defies Wesley before she knows his identity. She tries to kill him by pushing him down the hill. He turns his back for one second and she makes a move against a man who she thinks will likely kill her. She saves Wesley when they exit the forest. Yes, it backfires, but she doesn’t know that. From that point on, Buttercup makes deals and argues with Humperdink in an attempt to get out of her betrothal. She uses any argument in her arsenal. It doesn’t work because she doesn’t know what he has planned for her.

Do you notice a theme? Because as I wrote this I noticed that Buttercup makes moves without context, which is why her escapes never work. She is a character acting without the information to succeed. That’s not her fault. That’s not passivity. That’s plot. The plot actively works against Buttercup freeing herself. So maybe we cut her some slack.

if they're gonna remake The Princess Bride, it should open with a kid sick in bed scrolling on his phone. his grandpa arrives with a gift--it's a DVD player with a disc already inside. grandpa hooks it up to the TV and presses play. and we all just watch the original 1987 film again.

Can yall stop complaining about Mystique in Doomsday WEARING CLOTHES AND NOT BEING FUCKING NAKED. Don’t get me wrong, I love the early X-men movies so much but undeniably Mystique was heavily fetishized. In the comics, she wore clothes the girl wasn’t just walking around all blue with her bits out 24/7. So I love that she’s finally being treated with some more respect in Doomsday. Also do you guys have any idea how long it took to do that full body makeup? EIGHT HOURS god forbid a woman doesn’t want to sit and have her entire body covered in makeup for EIGHT HOURS EVERY DAY. I do have my gripes with the new makeup though, I do wish they matched her face makeup to the OG movies, it looked so much better and so much more intimidating and “real” (as real as a blue shape shifting mutant can get). But with the downhill decline in the quality and effort that Marvel has been putting into their characters design and presentation, I’m not that surprised but I so desperately wish they would bring back the makeup and wig quality of the early movies while also maintaining her dignity. Is that too much to ask for

I haven't seen the newest season of X-Men 97 because i am NOT getting a disney+ subscription, but I imagine it's pretty good. Here's a comic dedicated to Scott Summer's enfatuation with soup and Kurt's oddly cat-shaped sillouhette.

Another week another cherik hell

There’s a lot of people I’ve seen complaining about the new X-men 97 episode and how it’s all about Polaris’s relationship to Magneto and also drawing attention to lot of her other storylines where the writers always have to attach her worth and story to a man. Which is a problem and she is so powerful and easily can stand on her own and deserves stories where she isn’t just an extension of a male characters plot, but I actually loved the new episode. I would say it ABSOLUTELY focused on her personal power and independence as an individual, but Magneto is such a major figure in the Marvel universe where being the daughter of that man WOULD affect a lot of one’s life and actions and decisions (maybe my own daddy issues make me relate to heavily or something idk) but especially for 97, that feels like such an important storyline to explore those complex feelings about her relationship with him and his absence in her life, his death, as well as how she is being forced to fill in his shoes and her resisting that title to be her own independent person separate from that of her father. Because again, she is BADASS AS FUCK AND IS COMPELLING WITHOUT A MAN. But that sort of family dynamic and pressure is undeniable and inescapable and does leave a lasting mark on a person.

Anyways I love her Polaris is everything to me I’m a sucker for the Magneto angst plots but I also do need some Magneto-less Polaris plot at some point. (Also I don’t care that half of this post is probably run-ons I’m too passionate for grammar)
